The term "river" could possibly come from the Mississippi river boats where holdem poker was first played. pokerterms.com has the biggest list I've seen of poker words. They give a possible origination of "turn card" but I'm not convinced of their theory, basing it on the last turn, or bend of a race track, but I've come up with a bit of a theory.
The turn card is also known as 4th street and the river can also be called 5th street, though thats less commonly known. I can't find any evidence that the flop were originally streets 1, 2 and 3 but it's surely feasible? There is also the broadway, meaning an ace high straight. 1st street,2nd street etc. and broadway make me think of New York so maybe that's where the terms originate?

Good point that does make sense.
