To chat or not to chat

edited September 2011 in Poker Chat
Am I the only one who has more fun at the tables if a bit of banter is going on? (Shoutout to master Keenberg)

How come so many players are completely silent?

I can obv understand it for serious multi-tablers, but if you're only playing 1 or 2 tables (and most of the players in the small PLO/PLO8 mtts seem to), is it really that hard to at least throw out or acknowledge the occasional nh/wp, call someone a luckbox or make fun of their footie team?

What does the silent majority think?

I love a bit of banter. If I'm playing 3 or more tables then I'll have them on mini view and so obviously can't chat, but 1 or 2 tables and I'm deffo up for a chat.

Very similar myself! I will chat if i have 2 tables open. Anymore and i cant see the tables so i am in mini view. I do pop on to the chat box to say a quick hello though if i see anyone join who i know.

I tend to chat a bit on the SNG's and MTT's more as i multi table more when playing cash.

I'm almost always 3-tabling and often making smalltalk on all of them, just more fun when it's social.

its because most are bots and the actual player is fast asleep. only joking (i think). a lot of players are multi tabling and are on mini view and can not see chat.

you obviously haven't been on my table, I'm the biggest chatterbox on here.

Lol @ irishrover, quietman and solack. I consider the banter to be a big part of playing poker and am always up for a chin wag on the trials and tribulations of this game we are supposed to be playing for fun. I have actually been told to be quiet (in more forceful language than that) which provoked anger issues as, like i told the miserable so and so's, they could always turn chat off. Obviously it takes a more skilled player to chat and play at the same time :)

i like a chat now and again but only if 1 or 2 tabling, but yeah ur right it seems not many players like a chat these days (or maybe they just dont like me!)

some players would also argue that if you have time to chat then you may as well add another table and not chat, it's all down to personal preference i guess

I rarely chat, mainly because it's to difficult to play 2+ tables, with a mouseless laptop and have the X factor on in the background while the kids are scrapping on the settee. It's just to stressful

    1 or 2 tables = chat on. I like a bit of a natter
DTD 3 tables = min chat eg NH, WP etc.

One thing i have noticed is when a tourney starts very few people say hi. I always wish everyone GL and rarely get more than 1 or 2 replies from strangers. What is nice that I have noticed is that when a new player introduces himself the response from the table is very welcoming. Never seen that on any other site.

To be honest :( when i chatted on the chat box i got asked the question "do you ever shut up" xD but i feel if im enjoying my game with a bit of chatter i focus better then staring at a blue screen with cards on

It is sooo annoying when someone lucks out on me and busts me, I'm trying to be a good sport and congratulate them on the hand and they just ignore it.

And if I bust someone the best I can hope for is abuse, although that hasn't happened that often (the abuse :-) ).

I assume most people wouldn't be that rude/anti-social in a live game, so why here? Good manners cost nothing.
