Diary of a losing recreational player - The sequel

Posts: 188 First: 4/6/2010 Last: 2/10/2011 | Firstly let me tell you a bit about myself. I started playing poker approx 5 years ago and within the first 3 months I won 2 decent MTT's on Pacific netting $4k and $3k for $20 buy ins. This was possibly the worst start to my poker career that I could have made as I suddenly thought it was the easiest game in the world and I just needed to log on to win vast sums of money. Since then the reality of poker has kicked in and I have muddled along playing MTT's, SNG's and cash. Although I rate myself a half decent player I probably haved lacked the focus to be a consistent winner. Hence the reason for this thread. I have played on numerous sites and have now come to the conclusion that i am going to focus on Sky Poker. My aim is to become a more focussed player and believe that by updating this thread every time I play this will help with this goal. I intend to mainly focus on cash, as the variance of MTT and SNG drives me insane. I will play the odd MTT as I do enjoy them every now and again. I will start with £200 in my account and will be playing the £20nl games. Yes I know my bankroll says I should be playing lower but the £200 is not my entire roll and I have the money in reserve to be able to play this limit comfortably, I also find that playing at a lower limit does not give me the motivation to succeed. I would rather have the extra bankroll in my account than Sky's anyway. Hope that people will enjoy the thread and will be able to give me advice as I will post hands of interest and ask for feedback
Some of you may have read the original post (opening post above) and are probably thinking "oh no not again." So a quick resume of what has happened since the original post. I have spent the majority of the time playing cash 6 max on various sites, some giving me rakeback, some grinding the welcome bonuses and have at points got to the heady heights of 50nl, depending on the site and the perceived softness of the opposition. At the end of the day I have played for the past 11 months probably an average of 2-3 hours a day and have made the vast profit of approx £400. I have now found that I am turning into a robot and that the original dream of making a steady second income, to pay for such things as holidays etc has now become a bit of a drag. So what to do now, I hear you say. I have decided that cash is possibly not the answer. I have always enjoyed playing MTT's and multi table SNG's, but never really put the effort and time into giving them a real go. I have considered trying the multi table sng's on a well known american site but have come to the conclusion that I am not 100% confident in playing on that side of the atlantic and also don't want my poker life to become a complete grind. Having given it some thought I have come up with the idea of playing MTT's on SKY. The rationale being that the player nos and prizes will be similar to the multi table SNG's, but will give me some variety in terms of structures and prize pools. I also have to say I love the SKY community and CH865. That's lovely, I hear you all saying, but why tell us. The reason I am starting this thread is that I found the last one extremely helpful in keeping me focused and certainly helped my game. So as of today I will no longer be playing cash but will focus on MTT's mainly and some SNG's when time dictates. I will update the thread after every session and post my thoughts and any interesting hands.

Played 2 MTT's this evening.
The 10.10 £500 velocity, with rebuys. Finished 49 out of 64. I didn't bother to rebuy as blinds were too high when I went out and didn't see any value in re-buying. Found it a bit of crap-shoot and may not play too many of these going forward.
The 10.30 £1k guaranteed bounty hunter. Finished 68th out of 125. Didn't knock anyone out. Lost the tourney when I lost the majority of my chips when all in with KK and leading when opponent hit straight on river. See below. Don't think I did anything wrong and it's just that thing called variance.
Played 4 small staked B/H this morning for an outlay of £11.20, and scored 2 bounties for a return of £1.50. Have to say I found the standard a bit iffy, but was surprised to see SUPERSNEDD playing in a £2.30 B/H. Fair play to him. Think long term I will win at this level.
Also played a £5.50 scary SNG and took it down for £22.50 return.
Thanks for the messages of support.
Just played a £5 scary and finished 4th when I got it all-in on the flop with a set of 4's only to find my opponent had flopped a set of 5's. C'est la poker.
Also played a £3 and £5 DYM, securing a cash in both.
Been unable to play for last couple of days, due to working ridiculous hours. Just managed a quick session and played the following SNG's.
1 x normal £5.50 6 Max - Finished 5th.
1 x £3.30 DYM - Finished 1st for a return of £6.
3 x £5.50 Scary - Finished 1st, 2nd and 4th for a return of £30.
So made a profit of £10.70 and my initial thoughts are that I may have the beating of the £5.50 Scary. I know it is early days but have played 5 and secured 2 firsts and a second and think this level is defo beatable. I shall now wait for all the advice about variance and that a sample size of 5 is nowhere near the 65,789,642 game sample size you actually need to know if you are a winner at this level.
Think I may struggle to avoid the lure of the cash tables as traffic is so slow on the SNG front. Off to work now but intend to play a few MTT's tomorrow night.
Played 2 MTT's tonight the Open and the Mini-Open. Have to say started dreaming of what to spend the £5.4k bonus on when I was sitting 7th and 5th with about 40 players left in both.
Eventually finished 22nd in the open for a profit of £21.50 and finished 13th in the mini for a profit of £5.60.
OK, we're back to reality as the old variance thing kicks in. Just played 2 SNG's a £5 Scary and a £11 DYM.
Below are the 2 hands I went out with, posted on 2 seperate posts as not sure how to stick them together.
Good thing is I got it in good and would have been sat on big stack if it held up, new the shove from Jessica was no good as made little sense for her to shove with a hand that was beating mine. Love those runner, runner bad beats.
As you can see I don't think I did anything wrong but just not my turn to win.
Have to say that the SNG traffic in a morning is very, very slow and is becoming a bit irritating. Have SKY considered a Cash 4 Points Happy hour to drive a bit traffic in the mornings, know it has been tried on a few other sites and seems to drive the numbers.
