TIME TO GET SERIOUS!

edited October 2011 in Poker Chat
Hi lads and lasses of the forum

I am a losing poker player, this is because I lack concentration, play above my bankroll or maybe just because i am not very good...I try to use serious bankroll management but i always tilt off or play to high etc etc and i have been thinking about what to do about this as i get bored easily ,to try and play properly and i have decided to set myself a challenge....

I am depositing £50 and that will be the last money i deposit on sky poker,if i donk it off and tilt then that's my lot.I do not wish to lose and i actually do think i am good enough not to so that is the challenge, i would love your input into the sort of games u all think i should play to maximise profit and value!!!!!!

getting married next year and really think it is time to get serious as there are other things i should be spending money on

after all sport hurts go hard or go home!!!!!

JD!!!!  Good luck in your quest Sir!!

I turned 20 into 2k+ on micros but am about 400 squid down this year... It's defo doable but shoving with tp-ck at micros will not get you buntage!!!

If you are serious about this challenge then 2pr+ is your min shove range in micros... flopped trips are like 72 at this level so be very aware!!!

All the best JD, I'll root for you all the way!!

    xx

Hi Jesusdog, I found the best way to learn a good game before you take on the big boys is to play the 2.20 deep stack games-- 5000 chips--- 12 min blinds---- plenty of time to play a solid game and wait for your spots--- create a solid image so that when blinds reach 150/300+, you have the image to start being creative and stealing a bit--- gl--floppa whoppa!

Play cash sir , £50 is plenty for 2p/4p , read dohh's thread/blog on micro cash then just build up up up  , i started here and have worked up to nl20 in bout a year , i also dabble at nl30/40/50 and even 100 , honestly it is possible xx

lol, a man after my own heart. I'm pretty sure I'm better than most on here. But you'd have to be a devoted bum just to prove it. It gets boring. They're all geeks. I could win but can't be bothered staring at a screen for hours at a time. Be proud to be you, I'm proud to be me. Used to be physcos like Ghengis ruled the world, now the geeks are taking over. I don't care either way. I just like drinking.

You need to get out of that "oh it's only £1.19" mindset. Not just for the low amounts you're playing just now, but if you ever do make it up to higher stakes, you don't want to be losing hundreds/thousands of pounds and thinking "that could have paid my car insurance/bills for the month/etc.". When you start looking at profits/losses in terms of real world objects and attatching actual value to them, you become scared money - and from your earlier post where you said you gambled your entire roll at one time, you may already be. Never bet more than 5% of your bankroll in a session because you're just putting huge pressure on yourself. You end up worrying about not losing everything, your game changes and you actually become a worse player as a result.
If you have a £50 roll, you should never be going higher than 2p/4p until you're up to about the £200 mark. I'd say if you can grind it up to there, you're well capable of taking at shot at 4p/8p.

I know from personal experience how frustrating it is playing at limits so small, because you feel like you're spending a huge amount of time playing and you're only getting tiny wins back for it. Something that helped me was simply judging my game on whether I ended up winning or losing in a session rather than how much I made or lost. As long as I ended up a winner, I didn't care whether I won a penny or a hundred pounds.
Just play tight, solid poker and stick to good bankroll management. Your game will improve and the profits will follow.

Dont know how long you played and how many tables, but a +30BB session is not bad by any means

You really should have at least £80 to play 4nl imo, I would deposit 100 to play it if I were you, so that a bad run wont halve your bankroll and it prob makes it less likely you tilt

Learn to play good ABC tag poker, put in volume, stop playing if you are tilted and dont play higher until you are rolled and it should be possible to make some money. Even if you are good though avoiding tilt and moments where you spew away a buy in are key to being profitable

    Hi mate!!

I have always enjoyed your posts, respected your opinions, when others [+myself], have maybe misunderstood them!! So it would be a shame if that £50 gets blown & we lose you from the forum!!

You have received some good advice above, [Dohhhh stuff excellent],
from which i hope you take heed, and succeed, [see am poet too]!!

I have been in similar ship to you, in that ma focus is ouside Poker, [I do wish you well in your forth-coming marriage], am poker-newish relatively, but found the challenge, exhilarating, after succeeding in sport & business!

From your OP I recognise, some impatience[maybe], that i too have suffered from, where after some small success's in pub poker & here on sky in ma early days, all good work [& money] was wasted playing well above a sensible level for me!! I do not regret it, as heads up with Dan & Lolu etc, Expensive Rollers before being ready & DYM's v Ben, 1267 etc have been a great learning curve!!LOL

Hey, You have to pay for good training,[mentoring]!!

Sorry that last paragraph seemed to go bit MEMEME!! BUT!! The point!!.....

Only YOU can find where best to be profitable, but, if you can get some frustration out of the 'chase' & some real enjoyment back into your poker, am sure this would be a more fruitful experiance!!

Again referring to others , I will back up the advice given, and say THE BEST VALUE, WITH WIDE SPECTRUM OF SKILLS ON SHOW....Are the DTD series on mondays!! £1, £2, & £2 for a tourney series, where the chips MEAN SOMETHING TO PEOPLE!!

These I feel have no doubt improved ma enjoyment, and made me appreciate the full range of skills that should be used in Deep stack poker
Namely, patience, use of position, bet sizing, aggresion at rite times, gear changing, notes & reads on players!!

BIT LONG-WINDED BUT HOPE HAVE HEPLED, GL MATE!!

ps. Have full respect for Team Jesusdog, BUT if it helped as a trial maybe, WHY NOT....Play for the Hitsquad, one week, see how you feel, you'd be surprised what a little encouragement from a cyber-poker-friend can do for YOU!!  Let me know, ALL are welcome to The Squad

GL, May your marriage plans go well !!

£1.19 profit - no problem with that an NL4.

I just played 3hrs 20 mins at NL4 & finished 6p down! (was playing DTD as well)

As stated earlier good practice poker (despite the odd all-in caller pre A4o - happened to me tonight - why do they always hit?? - AREA 51 here we come!) is the DTD on a Monday. This attracts a lot of regs - most of which play either a lot at that level or higher - and its only a fiver.50

I also suffer from the dreaded impatience & find playing less times a week works for me. Might not work for u though as will be under the thumb soon, so enjoy while u can!
