    • The usual things like reading up (books, articles, forums etc) on strategy, plays etc obviously helped, but the biggest help to my bankroll and winrate was to reduce mistakes and poor choices as opposed to learning a fancy skill.

      Specifically:
    • Learning when to bluff and how to bluff properly (including semi-bluffs). Using position, observing the texture of the board, knowing my opponent's tendencies awareness of situations in the game (near bubble etc).
    • Choosing the right games! I used to chance my arm at anything - cash, DYM, mtt, omaha, NL without due regard to my strengths. I realised I could play cash but wasn't bankrolled to play it consistently, MTTs are by far my strength (see my sharkscope graph) and DYMs, while a very tight situation in the longrun to profit from, fit my bankroll and earn points.

The biggest advance in my game came when I learned to listen to Orford without actually taking any notice.

    Hey Guys

Best thing I ever did was record all of my games.  So many people are a little optimistic about their past results.  For the last two years I know every penny I have won and every penny I have lost, I know the forms of poker I do well at and the ones I need to improve on.  Got a lovely little spreadsheet, you should see it, more red than an explosion in a paint factory.

Great point TommyD, I have a spreadsheet that details every penny of poker I win/lose and details all formats/levels I've done it at.

Dohhhhhh - That's a horrible string of hands you posted a link to, ul mate.

I hear from Sporny that Tikay gave me a mention on 865.... gutted I aint watching tonight, have to make sure I watch the repeats of the show. Tikay when will the show be repeated next???

I just filcked over to 865 and saw Carlo and Sarah, and now I'm really confused??

I also have a spreadsheet that keeps track of every single tournament I play, performance by variant, format, month etc. Sometimes it highlights weaknesses (my hold'em game) and sometimes it highlights variance (PLO8 going from profit to loss to profit over the last 3 months).

Thank you very much for the compliment both of you.

Well obviously the commentary from all the guys on Channel 865 and the community folk hsa been great but in terms of my turn around on my Sharkscope graph... not sure if you've read my thread but I read John Connor's DYM guide and really took it on board, have been sticking to it and I simply can't fault it.  Only been playing DYMs for about 3-4 weeks seriously now (all £5.50 ones) and I've won about 130 out of 210 for a profit of around £80 which I'm very happy with.

So really, all thanks goes to John Connor :) Well... that and my own self discipline, which you do need ALOT of at DYMS I think (or indeed any format of poker really), just because so often you can lose concentration for 30 seconds, fancy a little look with pocket 6s and before you know it, you've lost 400 chips, which is 20% of your starting stack and you're in trouble and always playing catch up. You gotta be very disciplined and (as Carlo often says) just make sure you win the hands you play.

    good evening guys

what i am trying to do to better my game is to be disciplined, i started a thread stating i have deposited £50 and that it will be the last money i deposit,i am playing NL4 and building my bankroll slowly and sensibly,i have had lost of great advice from the community and on the forum,i will post results and hands in the clinic to improve further..

the main reason i lose at poker is because i gamble and have 'fun' i now of course realise that the best way to have fun is to win money!!!!!

    Hi Tikay,

I am more than happy to share my spreadsheet with anyone who would like it. I posted earlier today in Don's cash thread about it and said anyone who wanted a copy could PM me. I've had one taker so far and will send it to him. I don't really know how I'd go about sharing it via the forum but if you let me know how, I'll be happy to share with all.

No worries Tikay, I've figured out how to do it. Here is a link where you can download my spreadsheet from...

    http://www.filehosting.org/file/details/278567/Sky_Profit_&_Loss_(Paul).ods

It's not very up-to-date (doesn't include all my DYM successes) because I'm not on my own laptop at the moment but I thought I'd leave in my info just so people can see how it calculates the cumulative totals etc. People can obviously delete my info once they get it, just make sure you don't delete anything from the columns that have formulae in them.

NOTE: It's an .ods file because I don't actually have Excel (I'm too tight lol), so I use Open Office which is free, but all Open Office files are 100% compatible with Excel.

I think another thing worth mentioning as to what improves one's game is honesty. Looking at spread sheets, reading books/articles will not help if you refuse to acknowledge the leaks and holes in your game with honesty.

So many people on this site, and I'm sure others, blame luck/bad beats for continued runs of bad form as opposed to looking with objectivity at the decisive pots where they made mistakes. Maybe you got outdrawn because you didn't raise preflop? Perhaps you only bet a half pot on the flop with your made hand and gave the other player drawing odds when 3/4 pot bet would have taken down the pot.

So many people say "sky poker" etc when they lose as a favourite, failing to remember the hand they won as a 'dog before that or, the fact that your aces wil lose 20% of the time against an underpair!

Speaking of not raising the blinds, watch this hand I just played!

    Great show guys

The one single thing that improved my game more than anything else was reading Harrington on Holdem.

I've adapted my game since reading it and added in other ideas but as a solid basis on which to build is invaluable in my opinion.

After that, having some good mates to share experiences with and discuss hands and situations.

I'm just waiting for the posts to start coming in after the top tip earlier! Fed up of losing when you get your money in good? Then get it in bad and things can only get better :D

Read into it deep enough and there's an argument for playing aggro, but it was tongue in cheek and I fear people are going to take it at face value!

It's frustrating as hell but if people make calls to hit 10% outs, it means your winning 90% of the time... but yeah, it hursts badly when they hit that card!
