No more poker via the set top box!

edited October 2011 in Poker Chat

Very disappointed to read that set top box poker is ending next week. I am only a two-bit player who rarely wins anything but I have really enjoyed a couple of years of playing sky poker. Playing via the TV set top box was perfect for me as i don't often have access to a laptop. I also found using the TV a far more comfortable experience - why get hunched over a 15" laptop when you can stretch out and use a 42" flat screen TV ?

Being able to play on the TV was what made Sky Poker a bit different & special, without it you've just become another ten a penny poker website. I guess it all about money - after all people aren't playing multi-table or re-buys if they are playing on their TVs, I suppose they are the sort of higher spending players Sky wants.

As a result I'm sorry to say that I will be playing far less often and I don't think I will be the only one.

TIKAY - I reckon you are the sort of person who doesn't often miss a trick, but Sky Poker has missed one here - someone has made a bad decision, you are certain to lose players.

    Afternoon to U2, Bono. (SWIDT?).

Yes, I agree, it is a sad day.

The business case is overwhelming though.

    Sky Poker is a business.

They can - & do - measure EXACTLY, to one hundrdth of one per cent, how much of the business goes via Browser, Download Client, or "TV". (Set-Top boxes).

The amount of total revenues generated via Set Top Boxes has fallen to less than 1% of the total - largely because so many people prefer the Download, though the Browser remains very popular indeed, far more so than many might think.

However, there are huge bandwidth costs for Sky Poker associated with playing via the Set Top boxes. In fact, it costs more to keep that faclity enabled, for under 1% of the total business, than it does for the 99% of the business which runs through the Download & Browser. View in that light, you can see the problem!

I hope you stick around Bono. I'm sure, when you play, you must have an Edge.......
