Bit of a Philosophical Question...

edited November 2011 in The Shed
I should warn you now, this is completely unrelated to poker so if you don't wanna read a long post and give thoughts on a genuine question, you might wanna give this a miss lol... but I know we have a few fellow (I like to think of myself as one lol) intellectuals on the forum and I just wanted to get some views...

It's something I've been thinking about/arguing with my mum about recently. She's a very safety paranoid person in terms of having the house broken into etc but I'm kind-of of the opinion that if someone's gonna do it, then they're gonna do it regardless of what your set up is. During the time she's lived where she is now (17 years) 1 person has attempted (and failed) to break into the house, went over the fence and tried to break through the conservatory but couldn't get in... For this reason my mum think's its acceptable to put bits of wood with nails facing upwards on them on the top of her fence to prevent people climbing over the fence.

Another instance of what I can only call fear... my mums boyfriend (who is a taxi driver) has heard stories of when driving through a particular area of Liverpool (where he works mostly) of people just opening your car door, throwing you out and robbing your car. This is a VERY rare occurrence if indeed it has actually happened at all and isn't just rumours. So when he drives through area he always locks all his doors.

Now I wouldn't lock the car doors or do the things on the fence because the chances of it happening are so low. Now my mum says well even if it is VERY unlikely it is better to lower the chances even slightly. I can see what she's saying but it's little things like this that make it like she's permanently living in fear and I would genuinely rather take the tiny chance of these things happening than feel like I'm living in fear all the time.

Do you know what I mean? Wouldn't you rather take that small chance of maybe getting broken into rather than spending your whole life worrying about things, locking everything behind yourself and really it might not be for any benefit in the end? I said to my mum the nails on the fence thing was the equivalent of putting barbed wire round the house, just seems like madness to me, surely you shouldn't let these rare cases affect your way of life.

Might be off on a bit of a tangent here but I just can't help but think this way of thinking and fostering of fear is more and more like an American society and I already feel that as time goes by we are becoming more and more like them (in a very negative way)...

So I guess my question is...Am I mad? Am I alone in this way of thinking? Or do you agree? What are your thoughts?

Paul

it's not about her living in fear, i think it's about her living with peace of mind. she's doing what's right for her, can only be a positive thing not negative.regards Alan

    Yeah agree with this.

I have no idea how old you are Lambert so this might be Moot.  If your a young guy that lives with his Mom (this might not be the case) then your perceptions are totally different.  She will not only be worrying about herself but you and your belongings.  So maternal instinct will also be playing a part.

Overall I've always thought along the lines as you though.  There are things that I worry about, then there are things that are just pointless.  However:  I took my eldest 2 kids to birmingham on the train in summer holidays.  Timed it so that the day of our return was the day the London/Birmingham riots exploded.  Fooking awful.  Dont thing I've ever been so afraid.  Not for myself obviously, but how to safely get me two eldest (9 & 6) away from the really awful situation with the least risk and impact on their outlook.  Still am unsettled about it now.  As much as you cant worry too much about things, their is a level of fierce unpredictability in the world (and human nature) that shouldnt be ignored, that you shouldnt leave yourself unprotected against.

Intruder paint on the fence would be better me thinks :p

    Pacal's wager, simples.

Although I would not do these things, they are far from illogical as the ammount you can lose if you get carjacked, mugged etc, is far greater than the effort of simply locking the door through 1 or 2 "rough" neighbourhoods.

There are many security measures that need to be considered and not just locking the front door.  It pays to be Street Wise and especially if you are a Woman.  They range from dancing round your hand bag to not walking home alone, avoiding eye contact with strangers and what to do if grabbed from behind. Personal safety is more important then personal belongings as they can be replaced.  Personal Injury is far more serious and every measure you can take to reduce the risk is advisable.  When I was younger I had no fear while out but as I got older decided to take self defence course and recommend this to anyone even Men who feel insecure or vulnerable to being attacked or mugged.  No good afterwards saying I should have done this or that,  if you are a victim and done nothing to prevent it then you only have yourself to blame.  As you can gather I'm with Mum on this one, but she can't dig a big hole for the Burglar to fall down as much as she and me,  would like to.  The Law protects the innocent and lets the Guilty go free.  To reassure your Mother give her more Hugs or recommend my self defence courses.    Annie xx

    Hello sir

In my humble opinion,  As you will probably agree, fear is necessary and fear of the unlikely is both destructive and illogical.
We all run the risk every day of getting injured or killed,  We have the choice to either do this in fear or contentment,  We will all die one day, We will all get injured sometime,  I choose to live happily in between those events.
Fear is what those people who believe they are elite use to control the masses.
No fear of crime=No Insurance payments, No money for the controlling powers minions/slaves/brainwashed servants(civil servants) Police , Lawers, Blah blah blah.
No fear of the bogey man terrorist=NO justification for bringing in laws to restriced our freedoms.
Crime and war is there for a reason in my opinion, To create fear,Make money, -The tool of the power hungry.

I pity the theif because he/she is just as lost as your mum in this respect(No disrespect to your mum as she is only trying to protect you both)  Anyway Im with you on this bud.

    Be happy

    Peter

I think neither of you are mad, it is whatever is best for the individual.  Your mums actions give her peace of mind as somene else stated earlier -a good thing that must also please you I imagine a you don't want your mum living in fear? but also you do not persnally feel the need to take additional precautions in the instances you describe, nothig wrong with that either.

In this so-called civilised world people forget, humans base instinct revert to 'The Laws of the jungle', which can be found at a Poker Table as well as other places!!

In these days of economic madness & crime, it comes more to the fore!!

Your Mum is correct to try to take precautions, the safer you make your enviroment the less you have to fear!!

Where people see weakness they will strike/steal!!

Homes- Alarms, secure locks, BIG DOGS!, sensible layouts of fences/gardens!!
Cars- secure ignition/ locks, Most High end Cars now have an auto door lock after 60 seconds which opens on any impact!!
Poker tables, be strong, re-raise back at bullies, at get you Mum to put that wood with nails on on her Big blind!!!!! lol

Truth be told its a bad ole world out there, show strength always!! They nearly lost control of country to a few hured kids throwin rocks & looting, what will happen if food & water starts runnin out!!

The HitSquad are Ready!! Aint no-one walkng all over OUR Big blinds!!

I SAY BRING BACK THE GOOD OLD DAYS WERE YOU COULD LEAVE THE BACK DOOR OPEN OR FRONT DOOR UNLOCKED SO FREINDS, FAMILY AND NIEGHBOURS COULD JUST WALK IN AND SHOUT ONLY ME,
THESE DAYS ARE A JOKE AS THERE IS VERY LITTLE RESPECT TOWARDS EACH OTHER.
MIND YOU THE A COUPLE WEEKS BACK MY DAUGHTER LEFT THE FRONT DOOR WIDE OPEN, BUT THE NEXT DOOR NIEGHBOUR SHOUTED IS ANYONE IN, OFF COURSE NO RESPONSE SO THEY SHUT THE DOOR AND PHONED MY WIFE TO LET HER KNOW, FORTUNATLY EVERYTHING WAS IN IT`S PLACE AND WHEN OUR DAUGHTER CAME HOME FROM SCHOOL SHE GOT A FEW CHOICE WORDS, LETS PUT IT THIS WAY SHE WON`T DO AGAIN.
