KNIGHT VALIANT was still in the lead and gave the impression he was far from done with when making a bad blunder and losing all chance two out at Kelso last time, his rider losing his irons and quickly pulling up, and he’s of interest in Catterick’s opener today (12.30). He seems well suited by this course and distance, winning in good style in March and unlucky to run into a well-handicapped rival when second there next time, and after a couple of below-par efforts this summer Knight Valiant gave the impression he was on the verge of a return to form at Kelso. His jockey booking looks encouraging, as Conor O’Farrell looks a cut above most conditional jockeys and has already won three conditional jockeys’ races this month, and whether he is held up (as was the case for his previous wins) or makes the running again (under a jockey who has proved adept using frontrunning tactics), a big run looks on the cards.

At Kempton (4.00) THE DUCKING STOOL might be worth chancing in the 1m handicap off her lowly weight. She shaped quite well when a 50-1 chance on her first start for her current yard at Newbury, still bang in contention 2f out before fading, but was then reported by both her trainer and jockey to have been unsuited by the track when disappointing upped to 1m4f at Folkestone last time. She drops in trip and has cheekpieces fitted for the first time and, much more lightly raced than most of her rivals here, it shouldn’t be surprising if she’s able to make an impact off the minimum mark.
