Im from Bury, Greater Manchester and I must admit I had never heard of it, but this is what Wikipedea says about it!
Mad Friday is a colloquial term used in the UK, referring to the last Friday before Christmas Eve. The name is derived from the large number of drinkers and partygoers, prompting greater police attention in areas such as Manchester[1] and East Lancashire.[2]
its the first friday after the last monthly pay day before xmas most works, sports teams ect have their xmas pub crawl on this date. going mad all out on the lash before all there cash is gone on christmas expenses
Coming from a town that had an army camp and a naval base and had trainloads coming down from Bristol for stag nights, every Friday used to be like this. And Saturdays. And most other nights of the week.
Weekends we had plenty of regular and military police out and about, very visible, and very quick to get involved.
Yeah, over in Skipton its also known as 'builders Friday'. All the builders finish at dinner time and hit the pubs. By tea time they are all falling out with each other and fighting each other. 10 minutes later they are hugging and staggering off to the next pub where they rinse and repeat the whole thing until all the pubs are destroyed!
I used to think it was alright but now i am a bit older i just think that its full of to$$ers who think its alright to pick on people either verbally or physically. I stop in on this night, as od alot of others. I think to enjoy it, you need to start drinking at 12 o clock so you are on the same wavelength. Its no good taking the missus out for a few drinks at 7 o clock as its just mayhem.
