too aggressive??

edited December 2011 in The Poker Clinic
Last nights deep stack at 7.15. Just coming up to the first break and I had been building my stack quite steadily so far until I moved tables and in 2 straight hands i was gone! Just wanted some feedback really on whether i needed to play quite so aggressively?? No reads as like i said just been moved.

    Both look fine to me.

Both fine would you have posted had you won?

Bit too aggressive with a/k for me personally so early on in the tournament, especially with your chip stack. I know you had the villain covered but i'd rather call and see a flop.

    The j/j hand is fine.

    both fine

dont see any advantage to flatting 3bet in hand 1 with AK, either shove or fold imo

Why is it u feel the need to post comments like 'would u post if u had won'?

Ur probably right, i doubt i would of posted if i had won, but the point is whenever you go out of a tourney, u look back to see if there was anything you could of done differently, to see where ur mistakes were. So my point was to see how other players would of played this situation and to see whether or not i had made the right decision.

Maybe you see yourself as ivey's understudy and dont feel you need to post hands yourself for advice but there are players like me who want to improve and are looking for advice. thanks again

lol i dont think im the greatest player fwiw

but we get alot of standard hands in the clinic, Hand 1 you lost a flip. hand 2)you are a big fave 65/35 when the chips go in so again no problem. Both pretty standard hence why i have replied would you have posted if you won.

      Here is my opinion FWIW.

You are in a deepstack which means that you will be playing for 3-4 hours. This means you can not win until after the third break up until this point you can only lose. It is a viable strategy within these tournaments to actually sit out for the first hour and you will still come back with over 4000 chips and the blinds at 50/100, which means you have a more than playable stack and can go from there.Meanwhile the over aggressive players will probably have been knocked out so you will be much closer to cashing anyway. Although i would never do this it is still a possibility.

Now we know that to win any tournament we have to win our races and that is in the realms of the poker gods, but what we have a choice over is when we take them on.If we look at the first hand now you are sat very comfortably with nearly 100BB and a flat call pre followed by a fold on any flop we dont like would still leave over 7000 behind which is still very comfortable indeed. As soon as you 4-bet shove you have to consider the possible calling ranges of the 3-better. Very unlikely to have 2 unders and call and the same with a worse A. This means we are likely to be up against any pp or AK. So we are looking at a split against AK, racing against 11 of the pp 30/70 against another and abou10/90 against the last. This means that you will not realistically be ahead against any of his range and even have a small chance of being  totally crushed.

Still mathematically this seems fine as AA or KK are very unlikely. But the question remains did you need to be in this situation in the first place. You are sat very comfortably in chips and are at least an hour away from the get AK and get it AIPF time of the tournament. So for me using deepstack strategy i would have smooth called the 3-bet and folded on the flop leaving a very comfortable and playable stack.

Hand 2 as played perfect and just ran into a cooler.
