A three bet is a re-raise after a bet and a raise. Pre-flop is where it is most often used. Say the blinds are 5p/10p and everyone folds to the button, they raise to 30p from the button and the small blind folds. The big blind can call the raise, putting in an additional 20p or they can "3-bet" by making a further raise. Typically this would be around 3x the initial raise to around 90p-£1.

A four bet is another raise after that, say to £3.50. A five bet is a raise after that and so on.

Three bets are usually to represent strength and to build a pot before the flop when you think you have the best hand. But they can also be used to bluff pots that you had no right to win
