Rude words in forum postings?

edited February 2012 in Area 51
Poor old Seagull158 has just had a bun thrown in his direction, and a public warning, by one of the mods for including the term "xxxxxxxx" in one of his recent posts. It was deleted, and when queried he was advised that the use of "xxxxxx" is seen as bad form, and the thread was then locked off so no further comments could be made.

Considering the matter more broadly, it does seem as though the policing of naughty words is somewhat selectively applied across the site, with a reliance on the automated naughty word filter leaving a fairly large margin for double standards.

For example, the terms "cr@p", "s h i i t", and "I'm gonna f,,k your @r$e" seem to be OK - I've seen them all in postings and/or the table chat boxes - but "f#g packet calculation" (subsitute "a" for "#") wasn't allowed in a post I drafted, and "xxxxxx" has incurred the displeasure of a mod and resulted in a post being deleted.

As Seagull pointed out, this is an adult forum of sorts (presumably nobody under the age of 18 should have an account with SkyPoker?), and I personally don't find "xxxxxxx" offensive - in actual fact I applaud this degree of self-policing of naughty words, as it shows a little bit of consideration in not causing offence to others before pressing the publish button.

If the answer is absolutely no naughty words or phrases should be seen (veiled, mispelt or implied) then I think a bit more consistency is required.

Does anyone else have a view?

I think it's absolutely rediculous that all the "soft" words are banned such as "sc rewed" "cr ap" etc

This is an adult site so why are we stilll treated like 10 year olds? :/

I don't think any of those Quotes are acceptable and why should anyone wish to use them.  Some do slip through the MODs net, and mild versions are tolerated if not directed as personal abuse.  I would be surprised if it was just the use of xxxxx as the reason and think it was due to the hole tone of the post in general.
I get posts deleted all the time and they are mild compared to some.  The Mods have the power to remove what they think is offensive and breaking the rules.  Your I've seen them in posts is really in the chat box.   He will do well to heed the warning as a Ban is iminent.  fwiw   Hugs Annie xx  :-)

Also if you swear in the chatbox, it is displayed as xxxx so Sky obviously don't view that as a bad!

    Agree with everything in o.p.

I get away with it all the time. Not that it'd bother me if I didn't like, you have a forum post edited, you're not gonna lose any sleep over it are you.

+1 to double standards. (part of this is that some areas of the forum the mods rarely visit)

+1 to rules too strict but whatever.

Think the mods are good, just the forum 'rules' that are abit pedantic.

stuff like "ffs" "wtf" "gtfo" "omfg" "fml" are allowed to go......do the people who write the rules not know what they mean or something?

Anyway the swearing thing is no biggie, the double standards thing is an issue though.

Frustrations do spill over into bad Language but Toilet Talk is not acceptable.  If you read the rules,  the use of spaces or inserts to by-pass the filter is breaking the rules.
You should be able to get your point across without the need to swear or use foul Language.

I don't think it's lack of consistency, I just think stuff is missed by the mods. The 'Report Abuse' doesn't inform the community mods (non Sky folks), only the Sky admins.

The mods can't edit posts in a thread except the opening post - so delete is the only option for replies. (I used to be one so I know. Software is really limited in functionality)

As for this site only being used by adults... well I've seen enough posts to convince me that there are many children on here, stuff that couldn't possibly come from an adult haha

My OP wasn't about personal attacks and any silly name calling that goes on (which I don't think is on) but about the consistency being applied to some naughty words and not others, and mods deleting some posts and not others?

    . . .  that and mods not looking into all the holes . . . .

    Guys

We are closing this thread but let us say something first.

We are clear on wanting the community and the Sky Poker tables to be a friendly and fun place to be. So as a result, we do not tolerate abuse or abusive words. We and the moderators (who do a great job for the benefit of the community) do our best to monitor and react where we see things.

We also appreciate the support of the rest of the Sky Poker community to inform us whenever they see something innapropriate - even if it is a 'modified' word to get around the filters. Remember, something does not have to contain a swear word to be considered innapropriate.

As we are sure you are aware, it is not 100% as to whether something is deemed offensive but we do monitor to watch out for this. It is not possible to go through every word in the dictionary and say what is and isn't allowed - especially bearing in mind the above.

Please do read the community guidelines and use the facilities available (like the report abuse button). Thankfully, the vast majority of things on Sky Poker are fun and in good spirit. Please help us in keeping it that way.

Thanks and have a good weekend everyone.
