Tournament Winnings

This has always annoyed me. You know when stats appear, like 'pro x has $5m in tourney winnings', am I right in thinking that the word 'winnings' does not account for money spent on entries?  So some uber whale could spend $20m on tourney entries, and show $5m in 'winnings' despite a net loss of $15m?
 
Im just trying to figure out Matusow is all.

    Yes doesnt accout for all the wasted buy ins they spend. maattasow is just a wannabe and by the sound sof it plays off borrowed money and is all talk hence the name. I doubt hardly any our as rich as the winnings may suggest.
