How many online tournaments do you think you have to play before you can say you're a winning player

Hey there guys

I've seen on many occasions that cash game players know if they're a winning player after 100,000 hands at a specific limit. I wondered how many tournaments you have to play to say the same thing after ironing out the variance that goes with it. Anyone got any thoughts?

In THEORY it would be, at the very minimum, in the thousands, I would say.

But if you play your first 4 or 5 Tourneys, & win one, you are still a winning player - just not a "long-term winning player". They are different things, really.
 
Just try & enjoy the game, & if you can win a few bob here & there, all the better.

99.9% of us are amateurs, playing the game for fun. Never forget that!

I've been on Skypoker exactly a year tomorrow. I've made a nice profit after about 600 tourneys so I think I can class myself as a winning player. If I can do the same in the next 12 months I reckon I can call myself a consistant winning player. But the winnings ARE a bonus. I just love playing the game.

You have a long,long way to go before you are past the stage of variance ironing itself out.
Just make the most of it and enjoy the run-good while you can.
p.s. I do not mean to imply you are not a long-term winning player,you may well be.

Variance is just a statistical measure of how far away from the 'expected' result something is.

You can't calculate the 'expected' result from something as general as a whole tournament (too many variables) 

i.e. It's not really a question of playing enough games to iron out the effects of variance - in theory every one of those results could be 'expected'(the correct result).

It's more that the more you play (the bigger the sample size) the more likely it is that your results reflect your true skill levell.

The conclusion is the same - even if it's skill that gives you the good results - that doesn't necessarily mean you won't just get unlucky in the games to come; so enjoy the run good whenever it comes and whatever is causing it.
