Another MTT hand - Flush v House

edited March 2012 in The Poker Clinic
This was just a regular tourney (not BH), £1.10 I think. Very early on in the tournament. Is this just a cooler or should I not have got my stack in? I know it's a paired board, but the way he played it, I just thought it looked so much like a flush, raising the flop with his draw, checking the turn when he doesnt hit, going for value on the river once he's hit.

Did I need to lose my stack here or not?

Just a cooler-you lost to runner/runner 7's. You cannot legislate for that.

I'd bet a bit more on flop about 150.

On river I'd shove for max value incase he just flats you're raise with worse.

Paul, am no expert, and dont often post here but will run thu what I would have done each street out of interest..

Pre,      Like the raise, but not enough imo, as already had caller think 5x+ more appropiate! You aint really scaring the button & Blinds with a 3x, after a caller, lots hands priced in!!

Post,    Checks to you mid pos, 100 into a 220 pot aint enough again, looks stealy & weak, you bet 180-220 you prob not getting re-raised against most hands [not here, unfortunately], & defining strength!  If he pushed after, protectin his set,  You can fold!!!!!
But after your lead He re-raise call ok, an aggresive re-raise here may get job done, if he aint hit set LOL!! Call for a club ok i guess!

Turn,     Non scare card, you both slow down!! A 3/4 pot bet here after his check puts him in massive position! Again if he aint hit set!! If he call or shoves, again you can fold!

Flop!!     NOW THAT SHUDDA BEEN SCARY!! As he aint gone away thus far, I Know you hit ya club, but just a call of his 465 is the safe option!

As said before,  I defo aint no expert, but MORE Aggression earlier will stop you being outdrawn down the streets, Focus on bet sizing, AT NO TIME ABOVE, Did you really put him to the test to find out where you were in relation!  Have answered  your post in GPC!! [turning a new leaf]

    GL Mate!!

Prob just proved what a lil' HitDonk I really am !! LOL!!

    Hi Lambert

Agree with hitman that your inital raise was too small, i would be firing out to around 150. Marisad elects to call from the sb - dont mind that 3 way. Its an all action flop for you both and to be fair ure not going nowhere on that board for now. The fact you didnt get re raised pre suggests that marisad wont have a premium hand and is more likely to be suited connectors or a lower pair, perhaps even Ax, but more likely to be one of the first as he is OOP against you and Ax plays terribly here especially early in a tourney, but seen that played many times before. Marisad checks giving the impression hes missed and you bet - which is fine but im probably wanting to find out exactly where i am here and am betting around 3/4 pot size. You bet just lower than half pot which he min raises giving you some information immediately. Does he have a flush draw? unlikely for me as you hold 2 clubs and i dont think he min raises with a flush draw. Two pair unlikely also as, would he flat call OOP with 96, k6 k9? not for me this early in a comp, but ive been wrong a million times before. I guess that leaves a set which is very possible of maybe even up and down straight 87 but again i dont really get the min raise there, or maybe an attempt at a bluff considering your bet size looks small if you have hit. He could be trying it on cheaply so im definitley calling here for the 5/1 odds that he is offering me. Your odds are miles too good to fold here if you take into account your Expected Value on later streets if you hit. The turn comes a blank 7 which im thinking cannot have hit his hand at all - so when he checks to you im betting around 450 here. If i get called now, i know im in big trouble if i miss the river as you are not giving him any where near the right odds to call his up and down straight - i cant have him on two pair so a set has become a massive possibility. You decide to check behind which sort of gives the hand away a little as it looks like your flush hunting, because a decent bet here says ive definitely got something and also gets the chips into the pot if you end up hitting and he becomes committed to an ever increasing pot which makes it really difficult to fold the river, if he has say KQ KJ K10.
Now the killer card comes on the riv. Giving you the flush and him the house. He leads out with 465 which looks ok considering but hes giving you the chance to come over the top if indeed you have made your flush. God, all this to think about in the short space of 15 seconds, its tough. At this point i dont think hes bluffing at all and because my thought process, which has taken longer than 15 seconds BTW, has giving him the very distinct possibilty of the made house im only calling here leaving myself around 800 if i get it wrong. Im definitely not folding just in case he did have two clubs and was playing his draw in an odd way or may have completely missed and is trying in on, but the bet size doesnt suggest that.

Once you commit youve no chance obviously, but in the short time you have to evaluate your hand, the board, what he could be playing, pot odds etc.... I think quite a large chunk of players lose their stack there, i know i do. Its a tough spot in the end.

Cant see villain betting worse than yours for value on the river,..fishy 8-10,? k? flush? cant see a 7 in his range tbh. By looking at that range it seems unlikely that his range would cosist of these hands, or would play them as he has, so for me calling the river makes more sense, there's no great value in shoving river TBH. He is rarely betting the river with air but i doubt he will have a worse holding than yours that would call a shove(although looking at his stack he prob allways b/c).

    Just thought of this.....

Are you relating your bets/raises to the prevoius bet or action, rather than the 'pot size' which should be your 'marker'!

    If you are, CHANGE THIS!!

    Hi Lambert

I'm certainly no expert but enjoy reading the comments on the site so i'm starting to put my 2p's  worth in too. IMO i would just point out firstly the reraise  preflop may prompt a "what does he have?" q and possible a 1/3 xpot bet on turn as a probe bet may clarify how he feels his hand looks. Certainly a cooler though imo. Its all much easier to see afterwards though especially when you've caught your 'nuttish' flush, if i can call it that. If you'd just caught one of the other 8 clubs or rather any that didn't pair the board, he may still have been tempted to call a value bet.  i'd say unlucky myself and very hard to give up on.
Mind early levels in T's can be horrible with so many fishing can't it? All the best at the tables....
