Miniclip 8 ball pool and poker.
There's a little flash game over at minclip called 8 ball multiplayer pool that resembles poker, mainly sitno and tournament poker, more than you might first think. Not the actual strategy of poker but the variance, win rates and the relationship between luck Vs skill, that if you looked at a spreadsheet of results from several different players of each game you would find it hard to tell which results belonged to which game.
The pool game records your life time results and displays them as a percentage for you and anyone else to see. You can think of this as what sharkscope or your poker diary shows for your poker results.
I've never seen any player with a pool win rate of over 67% over a significant sample regardless how good a player they are, that's about the limit for the best players. Remind you of a game you play?
You can play your absolute best pool and still lose to a weaker player and you can lose several times in a row to weaker players. You can be playing a complete pool fish with a win rate of only 37% and lose, all it takes is a bit of bad luck or a lapse in concentration. You could end up in the final of a pool tournament versus a pool master with a 67% win rate over 4000 games and win, not 'cause you out skilled him but because you got the run off the balls. The analogies go on.
Somewhat interesting but what's the point? Well playing the pool game is a lot like playing poker, in your quest to win and play your best and increase your winning percentage you run into plenty of adversity. Playing your best and losing to a weaker player, watching your win rate percentage slowly drop because of variance. Looking at the pool game and playing the game you can draw lots of comparisons with poker that can help you with your poker game and better understand variance and skill Vs luck, better deal with bad luck, tilt and frustration without risking a penny.
