Profman15....Diary of a Non-Grinding Novice.....Just Looking For Fun!!......

edited December 2012 in Poker Chat
Hi Profman,

Welcome to the the Hitsquad and welcome to the world of diaries lol. Sharkscope doesn't count C4P but I believe free entries and the like will count as though you've buoght in yourself so I think you would be -£33 if you get free entry to the BH and bust out. It also doesn't count anything you earn from taking bounties so a serial BH player's SS could look worse than it actually is.

On your final topic, yeah I think it's safe to say that some of Tommy students probably know about his pokering, although would be shocked that they hadn't mentioned it if they did know, so maybe they don't.

Good luck at the tables.

Profman15…Diary of a Non-Grinding Novice Just Looking for Fun

    Hi folks,

Now, before I start, the title does not mean that I’m a 53 year old man who’s looking to have a last fling at a sordid sex trip to Phuket or an advert I've put in the classifieds. Mind, I am 53.
This is my attempt, after a couple of prompts, to add a novice’s insight to poker highlighting funny(hopefully), interesting(possibly) and relevant(certainly not) observations of the scene though my eyes.

It may be about how I’m going about trying to improve my game and looking for your input or telling a story that reminds you of similar for you to relate or just giving you a laugh by showing my naivety with some faux pas.

Anyway, it’s coming up to a year since i filled in my details in Sky poker to” give it a go” . The anniversary  is in june and there’s a big party planned for me by Sky in Vegas, I presume. I know there’s at least 10 going!

Seriously, I can honestly say that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed losing money on the site although my Sharkscope statistics should not be showing my initial £10 or my £33 freebie into £15k BH for a ‘post of the night’( couldn’t pull the trigger. That’s three times I’ve got into it and still no bounty. I may ask Carlo to lend me that chicken suit!)Anyway, i digress.

So at today’s rate my sharkscope should improve by 43x1.5=$70approx………………………………not that I’m counting you understand!! That may be small overall loss but for a year of enjoyment, I rate that as good value myself. (By the way, are the c4p’s part of it?)

I’ve just been invited yesterday to join The Hitsquad by HITMAN_RV and I’m thoroughly chuffed…………..the dotted line has been signed! More on that another time….I’ve also signed a contract with Sky to always use spellchecker, watch my grammar( mind I’m an ex maths teacher so apologies in advance),  set it out so it is ‘pleasant’ on the eye and say nothing about Richard Branson’s goatee…oops!

Well, that about covers the first post. Oh yes did you see Jakally, TommyD , scotty77 and Rich last night. One thing Tommy, if you think the kids don’t know about your poker, I’d maybe reconsider. I used to play football on a Saturday. One time, only once honestly(!), I got booked. I walked in on Monday to find the class chanting “Sir got booked. Sir got booked….” In unison!!!! How they found out was a mystery

Cheers for posting fella's. I won't be stepping on your toes, i promise!

I've got a bit of time on my hands and just thought a viewpoint from a less experienced player may give newbies a chance to get acquainted with the site and playing poker as a new player as  well as giving the regs a belly laugh, hopefully. See you at the tables!!

    Hi folks

Cheers for your best wishes. Its nice to get 10 people commenting......

Actually, it reminds me of the time myself and a friend played in a friendly members comp at my golf club only to be told afterwards, in a somewhat churlish manner, that the group had decided to go back to the original 10 and were kicking us and others off. From then on i referred to them as The Apostles and the name has stuck!!! (TBH, i think they quite liked it).

Mind, if you want a set of mad rules then join a golf club. I may be up in front of the board and have to play with hickory shafts for the rest of the season now!

And now for an 'interesing' fact which i shall call a 'TIKAYISM': Are you sat comfortably? Good. Then i'll begin:

Did you know that Richard Nixon, that morally upright leader, won over $6,000 playing poker in his first two months in the US navy during WWII. This is equivalent to over $50,000 nowadays. He used this and other pots won, no doubt, to finance his campaign for the US congress in 1946....which he 'binked'. So poker has a lot to pay for, hasn't it?

    Beat that Tikay!

Have a nice day, y'all.....the prof

PS Does anyone know whether, with the new Chip Tic in operation at this years WSOP, where there are immediate totals available, will we be getting them posted on here or do we go somewhere else to see how the boys are doing for stack sizes?

Look forward to reading this given the tripe thats going around the forum at the moment!

Chip Tic is a subscription only service, $30 I think. Obviously that'll mean the numbers can't be reproduced here. You'll probably get data almost as good from the well-known online poker news site that reports live from the WSOP.

Your diary is a pleasing read, good luck to you at the tables.

    Here's my reply, as promised!

It seems you are a fan of the 865 channel too.  I must admit I'm not an avid TV watcher.  I watch England cricket, football, repats of the Bill and Frasier and that is where my TV watching ends.  So when at home if none of the above are on I quickly press 865.  I must admit I think Tikay is good value!  The show does offer good entertainment.  But some seriously good poker analysis too.  The likes of Lolufold in particular have an amazing insight and I think I've learnt a lot from watching the show.  Full tilt poker when they used to show that on Challenge TV was another cracking poker insight - anyway now I digress!

It will be interesting to see how u get on too!  My first day playing regularly on sky will be next wednesday I think, and it seems we may be both posting similar diaries, so good luck to you.  As a maths teacher that must give you some advantages as a poker player...

Have you played much poker at casino's or on different sites though?

Hi Yetigas1(where did that name come from? A yeti with gas??? I'm baffled....)

Anyway, ta for the post. I love frasier and have the boxed set. Too many great characters to fail. The Bill, now that's another story. TBH, i'm a tv addict and proud. Love my sport, 865(no, i'm not being sponsored!), almost anything on Discovery, Histrory, Nat Geog etc. For the price it's such good value and HD+ is fantastic. Not Virgin only Sky obviously!!!

The maths teacher side is a plus and a minus as i like the statistics involved and looking for Equilibrium plays. The only problem is that it assumes both players are playing optimally ie at their best. When they don't, the idea is then to exploit them with different types of play. At least, that's what one of my many books say. There's just such a lot surroundinding that and allowing for the variance!!!! I can see why people get frustrated when they feel they've set up a player and then that player sucks out but as long as you've done the correct thing, you should just bite your tongue, i say.

It's the start of a new month and my widget shows zero. I was awarded a C4P this month...yippee! I've also made a small profit, which i'm satisfied with as that's 5 months running......and all to have some fun playing poker and a bit of banter. Good stuff, eh?

    Have a good weekend..

    Ciao...the prof

PS Is there one TV programme you couldn't live without? (And don't be putting 'Embarrassing Illnesses' or, i can assure you, people will be moving their chairs at SPT's!!!)

    THE CURSE OF" MISS CLICK"

    Ciao folks,

Well, a new month appears and optimism is at its highest. I play a BH and with two pair(AJ's) i'm all-in with two others suspecting i'm ahead but against at least one draw. The draw catches....BUSTIDO!!! I'm not unduly hurt. So an early exit and i look for a DYM. Oh dear, no £3.30's but there's a £5.50 needing one player....i'll dive in ......."Miss Click" sniggers mischeviously......four cards are presented to me...."its Omaha!!!".

Now what, i think. Check for rules quickly....I'm sure i copied some notes down from Tikay. Ah, here it is after another three hands pass me by. 'Cards should cooperate with each other'........"is that it?" Cheers Tikay.....

The hands are passing by too quickly for me to read strategy articles, i need to see a top hand and go with it.  All of a sudden i see it,....two pair and a full house on the flop....before i know it, i'm all in and beaten by a flush ....surely not, i think.

    "Miss Click" winks at me...."Gotcha!!"

The cat is metaphorically kicked and i try to recoup my losses unsuccessively but at least with a level playing field. Afterwards, i find a site with basic rules on and print them out along with Sky's. Next time, i'll not embarrass myself so readily methinks........

So folks, you're admittance for the day in the confessional is....

What is your biggest "Miss Click" mistake? (needn't be poker but don't put signing the wedding register!!!)

    Addio...the prof

PS My 'tikayism' is hello and goodbye in a foreign language. Easy start today...italian but "Where's the bill/tolets/ wallet" is not within the scope of this diary. Sorry.

Hi profman, I was playing a $22 game on another site. Was pretty deep and in the top 10 with about 200 left. I had about 250k (I think). I raised in position with some junk and wanted to c-bet the flop but bet an extra digit and bet 110k rather than 10k! This put him all in, flop was KJJ and he tanked for a while before calling with a king. Was very frustrating and there was lots of shouting of fold while he tanked on the flop! I still had a stack and did ok in the tournament but it was a massive dent to my stack.

Keep up the diaries and I have selected the wrong game before a few times, generally selecting limit hold em rather than no limit. Tried to play them but i hate limit poker!

Aloha folk(yes, Hawaiin and i've been ....Go if you get chance!...beautiful)

Well My MISS CLICK post went well. Just Matt admitted to anything to making an error.
***There must be other misclicks, surely? Make me feel better, please!***

You really are just perfect and i'm such a 'klutz'. mind it did give me the opportunity to find out about Omaha hi lo. I apologise to the people i accidentally 'played'(loosely) with in a DYM. They must have thought there was a maniac at the table. After reading the basics, i can see that they must have had a good laugh though. I'm considering contacting Sharkscope to have that £5.50 removed from my losses as unfair(joke Lambert, i know i can't!!)

Tournament play has been better recently(could it be worse) though a cash in a BH with no bounties is a little thin, shall we say. I was happy with my play and cashing in the mini DS last night though kicking myself or not calling three way all-in with AQo which would have won me a massive pot. I'd put it in the clinic but i'd get....

                 "bite his hand off!"
                  "!!!!!"
and the like so i'm making chicken noises as a penance!!

I even tried to multi....two but it's a start! (DTD Forum is just fun so doesn't count). I did it with a MTT and DYM and the strategy may have more pro's than cons, actually.
     ***Your views would be appreciated.***

One rather tilted point for your consideration folks.........i was playing in a dym last night with a player i'd met before. He's a type, shall we say. Very chatty, likes to tell you when you've made a bad call, when he's got you, laughs 'audibly' at 'bad' plays etc. You know the type, i'm sure.
Anyway, we are in the middle of a hand. he limps, i raise and other player moves all-in. He decides to state in the chat box "AK" then tanks before folding. YES!! Yes, we know that sometimes we must make a good, disciplined fold in DYMs and it can be looked upon as a good play but really stating a hand whether it is or not during play really is a disgraceful, ridiculous, short-sighted and bordering on unfair play. Surely he's been playing long enough t know the correct etiquette. Tilt time!!

A few hands later and i'm all in ahead with 7 BB and A9o and called by my friends J7s, believe me, a poor, unnecessary  call and i'm out....to the  flush on river. I hadn't had chance to ask him not to discuss hands during pots so my chat box got bashed with "bad call" but without the "b". He probably thought "ad" meant "astonishingly devilish". HA!
I felt bad that i'd tilted into the chat so pleased that it may look like a compliment!! Ha.

Anyway, what can we do about this lack of etiquette as i'm seeing this a few times now including the vegas rail on a few occasion(one or two 'fans' were commenting on those occasions not the players which caused some argument)?
    ***What is your opinion?***

All the best and may the force be with you.
    .......................prof

PS  By the way, if you haven't read the thread by Bignoise yet then go to it now(after commenting of course). He's a really nice fella who's having some problems at the moment and its so nice to see members rally around. Maybe poker isn't full of blaggards and charletons eh?

    Great reading as usual prof,
I just made an all in call in a £11 Dym a real miss click. The only thing is it wasn't me, honest it was the cat, he likes the warmth of the laptop keyboard & if I don't watch out he walks all over it & by the time I had lifted him off the damage was done.
So £11 down the drain but the cats fine as any vets fees would be a hell of a lot more.
Totally agree about some players manners in the chat box m8, have no idea why people dont just engage brain before using their fingers!
I was the same with multitabling as well prof before I found out how to connect a monitor to the laptop to extend the screen size, so now am completely happy with 2/3 tables ( hasn't helped in the DTD tho I have been awful).

One misclick I have tried to forget for an age was when playing some £1.05 hypers for an afternoon, doing well and maybe winning 7/10 I just kept clicking on the next one available in the lobby.....
Another one fired up, here we go,, hang on, whats that say in the corner... £105 !
I didnt see the missing dot....
I was now in a £105 game with about £150 total in my account, that I had built up playing low stakes MTTs. Had taken an age....
Cue panic stations and find SKYs number, find online help,  no time..  up pops A5in my hand and im already down to 300 chips, I push I get called he has AK I lose.........
I now know where the lobby filters are and this will never happen again..........in theory....

Well as I said in my other post I use keybinds for my betting as part of a 3rd party program that has a few useful features for multi tabling, like auto opening my tables tiled, buying me in and setting my bet sizes to preset things so that I don't have to mess with stuff unless I want to make small changes to a bet size etc.

I've made a few good misclicks with it over time, that includes folds, calls and raises. My worst that I recall was when I was typing a message on another table but had forgotten to click "escape" to shut down my keybindings, and my mouse got knocked while was typing just as another table became active. I have my space bar set to set my slider to all in and my D button to bet, and so while I was typing I 4bet all in preflop with 29os and got called by aces which I promted cracked by hitting a 2 on the flop and a 9 on the river. I laughed but turned a shade of red at the same time, and the guy spouted a string of abuse at me in the chat box, and refused to believe a misclick story. hehe

My other favourite miss click story with poker was actually not long after I started poker, and had no idea what HORSE was. I meant to enter a 280 player sitngo but accidentally signed up for a HORSE one instead. I had NO idea of the rules of razz what so ever, and had never played seven card stud. So it was sooooooo funny as I had my mate looking up the rules of razz and trying to explain it to me (and he doesn't play poker) etc on another screen while I was trying to fake my way through it. It was only a 27 player SnG, but was funny as managed to come 2nd in something I was pretty much clueless of half the game. Certainly my friend and I were laughing our behinds off as I struggled to work out what the heck was going on.

    Statistical information from sky

    Hi folks

Can someone guide me in the right direction. I know i can't use HUDs on sky where i could get VPIP and AGG FACTOR stats etc so what 'valuable' info can i glean about my own game from the Sky statistics that are available?
HUD stats give you an idea of what you need for a LAG/TAP game but apart from showdown wins being in a50-60% range, i can't see what worth i can glean from my statistics as they seem to be based on decisions i or my opponents make.
If you have any ranges etc for certain types of players for 6max , i'd be grateful to hear abut them. Otherwise there's no reason for me to record them, is there?
The only thing i can see is that i'm seeing less flops than i did when i first started but thats to be expected..............................
.......after all 90% was a bit high!!!!!!!!!!!!

                                      cheers
                                          Steve aka profman15
