Hi Rich,

Liked your blog but not sure these are lessons poker has taught you. Seems more like you already knew these things and these are nice examples from the world of poker to demonstrate them.

If you had an alternative personality you could have said it very differently.

i) it's tough winning - when you get there make sure you milk it as much as possible

ii) you think I am happy with this - I'm not stopping until I take down the WSOP

iii) help a newbie - give me a break - do you think anyone helped me when I needed it

We also see these responses in the poker world - just be pleased you're not one of them

Bit of a conflict in there in parts though. Can't berate a donkey at the table, or even nicely say what they are doing is wrong, because if I was a good player I wouldn't coach a player to be better because I want all his money. But then our next lesson is to help out the newbie with all his constant questions... hmm, wonder which one I should do. Make up your mind Rich, i either leave them to flouder under water with my boot kindly pressed on their neck as I remove their wallet or I help them out. hehe

Personally I enjoy both, but then I'm very strange.

Thanks Geldy. They're not necessarily lessons that only poker teaches you, but they are things you can do in poker which will improve your well-being/reputation which can also be applied to one's general life too.

As for the alternative personality you cite above- you'd have to ask that person, if they exist, are they truly happy or just making out they are? And what does everyone else think of them?

I see where you're coming from, Kam. But I don't see any real conflict there. If someone is asking honest questions, then one should help them. If they're not then one shouldn't be offering up unasked-for advice or seeking to make them look stupid. As you say, you want the bad players to stay at the table, because you can beat them and take their money. There's nothing wrong with that, they've signed on the dotted line with their money and they know exactly what they're getting themselves into. So there's no moral quandary there. However, just being horrible to them is (a) not nice obv and (b) on a practical level, harming your chances at winning money as you'll potentially be chasing them away.
