Hi Lo?

edited July 2012 in Poker Chat

As you probably know, our very own Tikay went deep and cashed in an Omaha Hi Lo WSOP event this year (thus maintaining his 100% record of cashes in WSOP events - 2 from 2!)

He is a big lover of Hi Lo, playing it regularly. Basically we were curious who had tried it, what do you like / not like about it and just to chat about it really. Thoughts?

Thanks

OK, tell you what - we notice you are sat on table 'Odsal' at the moment. If you get that table to fill with people playing, we will give some free seats to the 12:25pm £3.30 Hi Lo tournament.

I like Hi-Lo because it's a new challenge! Also it's obviously the game where people have least knowledge about so there is value in them.

Thanks for the offer but i have absolutely no chance of filling it .The most i have ever had on there is 3 people.

Got any tips for people to try then Jonjo75? :)

Perhaps offering one of the following.

    1) Have a rake free weekend on the Omaha Hi Lo tables so people can sample it.
    2) Double Cash for points on all Omaha Hi Lo games.
    3) A cash credit if you play a certain number of hands in a week.

I play a lot of Hi Lo DYMs and the odd Hi Lo tournament, but never cash.

I wouldn't play cash because of the rake and split pots.

I would encourage others to give it a go though, because it is a fun game, but does hurt the brain at times.  Unfortunately the lowest DYM is £2.25 which may discourage players from having a go.

The £1.10 tournaments in the afternoons are fun, and maybe your best option as the lowest buy in on Sky.

We have a bit of fun with a TPT hilo cash game on a Saturday night although we haven't done one in a while. The last time we played every player had less than their starting stack cos of the rake. Only 2/4 though.

Yeah I think Tikay has also said this but dont try and chase just the hi or lo because often the low will be split so if you have just the Lo (when it is split between 2 and the other player has the high aswell)you will only get 25% of the pot .

    Agree with the others

I play 2.25 DYM and 5.50 DYM but would like to see a 1.15 DYM, that would encourage more players

Cash is -EV due to raked split pots so how about rake free if pot is split?

    Tip:

Be careful going for the low when you only have 2 low cards in your hand, as they may be counterfeited by one of them arriving on the board.

    Dear Sky,

Any chance of introducing some different forms of poker? About 5-15 regs on sky play mixed homegames on another site.

Razz is probably my favourite of these and quite easy to learn. I think more people would play razz on sky than plo8.

Definately think rake should be lower in HI/LO due to split pot frequancy.
P.s thanks SKY for free entry, I won the tourney and  I proberly gave you back the entry fee in rake when someone played me on cash table .
So we both won in the end :-)

most Hi lo regs agree with lower buy in DYMs

There are a few issues regarding PLO8 on this site.

Firstly PLO itself is a minority game here and by follow on PLO8 is therefore a minoity variation of a minority game. This means the traffic will be very low. PLO8 is not a game that should be played without a good grounding in PLO first.

The skill level differences between a knowledgable player and a novice are huge and therefore lead to people having to invest a lot to get better, which understandably they are not inclined to do, especially when there are juicy games available in a format they are more familiar with.

I personally love both PLO and PLO8 and enjoy playing both of these but due to the low traffic available it is quite a while since i have played even one hand of PLO8. A little while back i did a series of blogs on omaha strategy which included one based entirely on PLO8. Dont know if it is still around anywhere but it might be of use to anyone wishing to start out playing the game.

I hope that PLO8 does take off because i for one would love to be playing it more. The only thing i can think of to boost it up would be either for rake reduction/ extra points deals around. Or much better would be to get someone like tikay on the tables(when he gets back of course) at the lower limits and advertise the fact that he is playing to encourage people to check it out.

Apart from the plo8 dym's which have a harcore group of regs, the format is sadly very much neglected on the site.

As already mentioned by others, while there is a lack of stt's lower than the £2 level the likelyhood of attracting more players to the game is going to be limited.

Imo the evening mtt schedule needs a good overhaul in terms of buy-in (between 17:25 & 19:55 there are 5 tournies with £10/£5 buy-ins which as far as I am aware don't run or get miniscule fields) and structure (10min blinds good but only 2000 chips).

Lets have a £2.20 deepstack or doublestack in the evening and I guarantee* that in a few weeks it will get more runners than those 5 mtt's combined.

    *guarantee not guaranteed.

If anyone wants some "fun stakes" Hi-Lo Evenings (Cash & or Tourneys) after I get home, I'm up for it!

Almost any midweek evening is fine by me.

I played in the Sunday hi-low at 16.55pm and manage to finish second [£1.10p buy in]

more by luck on my part there was only 12 players but i enjoyed it and

£1.15 DYM's required to encourage people to try the game. £2.25 too expensive wnen you are new to PLO8 as my bankroll has found out over the last few days :-)

Hi mate, you've been on a couple of my tables.

I had the same problem when learning hi lo, was expensive playing regs at £2.25 at the start.  But hopefully you will persevere, and lets hope we get some lower stakes DYMs soon.

I would definitely like to participate.  Don't know how my game would be against a WSOP casher.  It would be nice, to have it at stakes that would encourage new players to try out, what you and I know is a terrific game.

    Hi all,

I played a hi/low tourney yesterday and enjoyed it very much, it was a low buy - as I only play up to about £3 buy in's MTT's

I really enjoyed it and would play more if they were low price  I even cashed - I came 2nd.

I think this one was £1.10 and there were 17 runners - it was great fun.  So I do now look out for them - and we seem to get a few players on the low stakes ones.

I did try a DYM one, but think you have to be cut out for DYM's - which I'm not - yet.
    Regards

    Ruth

Any idea where i would find this?

I have asked this before in community suggestions, but i think that there should be more levels of hilo dyms, up to £55!

I love hilo as it gives me a break from the holdem grind...

    +1 to razz on sky!

    :)

    That would be, errr, sick!

A few of us had a fun forum game going on a Sat night but its not run for a while (anyone know what's happened to jjjach? Not seen him about recently).
