Olympic volunteering...UPDATE

edited August 2012 in Poker Chat
Fox is prob your best bet in London for tournies.  I think they have nighly tournies that are 20/30£ or in that kind of region.

Aspers is more of a cash game place.

Would be interested to hear how the volunteering goes so gives us an update!

Cheers and GL.

    Hello all

I will most probably not be playing on Sky at all from tomorrow until 9th August as I am volunteering at the Olympics! I will try and get on if I can but its unlikely.

If anyone has any tickets for any event at the Excel then I shall be down there up until the 9th.

I am going to look to play live in London whilst I am down there and am just wondering where would be best? I'm generally a low stakes player on Sky playing mainly DYMs and timed tournaments. I am profitable but never really uped my stakes to more than an £11 DYM. I have been looking online and may play some evenings down Fox Poker Club or possibly Aspers Westfield. Anyone played here before? Decent? Is there anywhere in central/south London with a particually poor standard of play?

    Thanks all

Good luck with the Olympics! One of my sons is a "volunteer", it's costing me a fortune!!! BUT the life experience he's getting is probably preiceless!! (I hope?)
Im guessing TommyD's Friday night home game would be your best bet re poker? ;-))

    Fox is nice

it's not easy, as you will be playing against regs on the one hand, and a lot of limp/callers on the other (including some regs!) - but it is generally a pretty good atmosphere with only a few jerks.

o/w round the corner is the empire which has afternoon tournaments during the week. Probably less regs as they've all moved to the fox. But I haven't played there for a while so cannot honestly recommend it but it might be worth a look.

    gl with the volunteering.

Just a quick update for anyone interested.

Volunteering has been ok so far. Yesterday was definately better than today, was in the Boxing arena just showing people to there seats and basically watching all the Boxing go on. Today I have been outside the back of the Excel directing people to the DLR and various other forms of transport. That new cable car is so popular with foreign tourists! Have met a few athletes and various senior figures/sports ministers from various countries. I am updating fairly reguarly on twitter if anyone wants to follow me on there @scottbufc

I am intending on hitting Fox Poker Club on Tuesday night as I have a day off from volunteering on the Wednesday. The Empire buy ins are probably slightly too much for me. I was hoping to have played somewhere by now but this volunteering is quite tiring and the start times are stupidly early. I know i'd prob bust a tournament very early so wouldnt miss much sleep but you never know!

Glad you're enjoying the volunteering.  Son is "Missing in Action"!  Means he's OK for cash I suppose! Last I heard he was gonna be around the swimming pool.

Had a great day today, basically watched every bout at the boxing. Was at the top of the steps telling people where their seats were so once they were all in I watched. I will be going to the 2pm game at Fox tomorrow afternoon. Did manage a spin in the £150timed on here tonight and got a nice treble up which was good.

I'm at the Excel Glen so wont see your son but glad he's enjoying it as well!

Wednesday is my final day. Day off tomorrow. I've enjoyed my time and seen a lot of events. Today I was at the boxing for the Ireland GB match and the atmosphere was sensational. They measured the sound at 107 decibels! Fencing I didn't overly enjoy but probably because its never interested me and I dont know any of the rules at all. Have played a fair bit on here since i've been down in London. The two lads i've stayed with in Clapham have been top class putting me up.

I hope i've helped people from all over the world. Had an interesting conversation at Westferry DLR station today with a Yank family who were questioning how often I did my laundry! I met the 16 year old Saudi Judo girl who was the first ever female athlete in the Olympics from Saudi Arabia which was pretty cool.
