Top Players Note Taking

edited August 2012 in Poker Chat
I was just thinking to myself... how on earth do the very top players take notes against each other. I know there's a ton of meta-game involved but how does say Scotty77 write notes on Lol_Raise or vice versa, when they're both gonna be SO balanced etc, what could you possibly write?

Not sure how often these types of players would be on the same table together tbh - unless they think they have a real edge or are happy to grind break even for cash for points.

They all have their own unique style imo and would eat me for breakfast, but i'm not sure in the long run if they would make a great profit from each other and if they were on the same table they may lean more towards taking money from the softer players at the table.

Well yeah but whether it be mental notes, or actual notes on the Sky system they are as you say learning how they play. But how on earth do you manage it when the real top players are always gonna be so balanced that it must be nigh on impossible to assign ranges throughout a hand etc.

Yeah I know, I'm not saying it has to be on the Sky system, but they take notes on their opposition don't they, even if it is a mental note. I totally agree they probably don't put them in the yellow thing that can fit about 7 characters but I'm talking about notes of any sort.

So how on earth do you take mental notes against Lol_Raise when he's probably gonna take the same line with top set, as he would with TPTK and as he would with a FD and as he would with air etc etc.

Well no they don't but what I mean is, it's gonna be balanced to the point where a bet on a particular flop could mean one of a dozen things. Obviously they want always do the same thing with top set, but likewise they won't always do the same thing with air.

This might all be a crazy question but I was just thinking about it last night and thinking, how hard it must be to put the top players on a range (which is obviously part of what makes them good).

in that example I just fold like a scaredey cat as Matt is just too good.

runs pretty amazing at Omaha/Stud flips too.

is a fish when it comes to bottle tops tho.

I'd forgotten both these things, it's pretty sigh because I was glad to have forgotten the flips but the whole bottle top situation and the amazing amount of care and thought Pryce put into his response was priceless lol

there are thousands of players much better than me, i play most of my volume at nl200 which imo is probably the smallest stake you should be playing at if you are doing it for a living (maybe nl100 on sky as its in £££)

i really dont put  THAT much thought into being balanced because i think trying to exploit other people rather than making myself become less exploitable is going to be the most profitable way to play at this level.

I am assume he's referring to better people in the entire world. It's widely agreed that he's certainly one of the best on Sky, but Sky is abuot 5000 people out of 6-7billion on the planet.

EDIT: Maybe Sky is more like 15-20k but still lol.

My notes on the regs tend to be short term ones, rather than how a hand was played specifically.

For example, I will note when I think someone is likely to be 4betting wider because in the previous session I was 3betting him quite a bit OR just generally when I feel the next bluff might not get through etc.

Against people you play against regularly, note taking other than this, imo,  is a little redundant.
