is poker trully easier against better players

edited November 2009 in Poker Chat

hi guys,

Im not sure if this is the correct way of wording this. Although after a very successful live night last night against some far superior players to myself or so i thought anyways, i left up a 1000% in moneys and thinking is poker trully easier against better players. Or have i just got majorly lucky.

it was the best i felt ive played for some time. Yet despite this (over two games and won both) i felt incredibly lucky.

in general, you should be making money from bad players

1 game however, a lot is down to luck, longterm if you believe these players are superior to you, you'll lose

Hi Don. Congrats on your good result. I'm not sure I can say it's easier playing superior players but I find It a much more satisfying game. I always feel less frustrated also If I lose from being outplayed rather than being beaten by someone that calls every street and gets lucky on the river!

well done on the result but i dont agree,i think you can be to good for players who have barely played though.

I think i have mislead. It was 2 results not one (2 games where played i won the first one and got to the heads up in the second as chip leader and we dicided to split as a result i got classed as the winner)

Although thats despite the point. I just feel even though im a decent player, i seem to up my game against those "better" players. I think this is a common thing. As a result i think it is easier to win against better opposition.

i would rather play a bad player over a good player for money

poker is MUCH more enjoyable against better players

there's nothing i enjoy more than being outplayed by a shark :D

I know exactly what you mean by this. The most profitable game I find is playing against a good player. They respect check raises and if you use any strength they will fold. Against a bad player I feel you need to hit a big hand to be sure you are ahead as you never know what they have and even on the raggiest of boards they can have 2 pair.

you have no sample size, but by definition, no poker is not easier vs good players.

People mistake TAG players for good.

Poker is easy against TAG fish, spewers and ultra nits.

My 3rd place in the Posters Freeroll is probably my best ever result, and that was against some top players!

I tend to lose against the lower players because they do so many dodgy ALL-ins and tend to be very luck!

Better players will lay down a hand to you more readily, but in the long term they will get you. They will suss-out your game and be one step ahead of you most of the time. Having said that the way to improve is to continuously step up in class when you can afford it. You won't learn playing with donks.

you just have to adjust your game against different type/ablilties of players

Well done Don,  I totally agree with you, I find the game more enjoyable playing against better players and tend to play a better game.

I believe that this is because the bigger mistakes you make against better players the more you will get punished so I tend to play a lot tighter.

playing against lesser players you do need a lot more luck as they tend to play a lot more hand aggressively

One thing I must say is you can also learn a lot more playing and watching better players

IMO poker isn't easier against better players, but it is more enjoyable. You know that you will be respected for raises (mostly) and not many will call a shove with a hand like 84o or something similar. Congrats on having a good night, but beware the variance. lol

Bluffing i find is easier against better players because they can lay down a hand if they think they are beat. Whereas the fish will call any bet to hit a gutshot.  You can use more sophisticated plays against a better player who is capable of reading the texture of a board.  And my final point is to say speak to the Devilfish about this. He hates with a vengeance playing against the fish and loves playing against the big boys

I'm not sure about easier. I woud say it is a 'different' game against the better players.

I think you need to adapt your game to the opposition you are playing against. Higher quality opposition will read the texture of the board and allow you the odd bluff etc.. whereas perhaps if you are playing a freeroll or against players you feel are weaker and will call you down regardless, then you can play ABC poker.

Of course if your statement was in relation to a game of pure skill chess / tennis etc.. then it would be illogical. If the players are better than you they will beat you, nearly every time.

the problem with bad players is they don't kow what moves you are making and don't kow when to fold and will go chasing cards. So whilst on average you will make more from bad players, I can see why you think you it is easier against good players.

I think that against a better player you will lose long term. It is however easier to play against people who have a decent standard but are still below you. Assigning a hand range is only possible if the player has one. A half decent ABC player will be easier to give range to where as a "Better" player will be mixing up their game. A totaly inexperianced player will not know what hands they should be calling - raising with from what position and your only range may have to be "Any 2". ( how can you know what they have if THEY don't)

It's harder for me to play people who have no idea how to play but not easier to play people who are more skillfull than me

hi all....new poster! personnally i think it is easier against better players as the tend to give u the benefit ov the doubt with hands you are bluffing with, i.e think ull raises again after the flop if uve raised before etc....just my opinion!
