I'm one of those who is sat at home all day posting on the forum and sometimes playing in the afternoons although it's usually in the evening. Had to stop work at 50 due to illness (now 58) Luckily I make a profit so my poker is funding itself and I'm not wasting my sickness benefit or income support.
Im on the sick with Vertigo and depression. I am working on finding a way back into life or to die, really dont care which. A bit heavy but you did ask!
I'm a business analyst for an HR/Payroll software company. So, someone else has has to write code based on the stuff I've made up and make it work. One day I will get found out and the dream will end.
In the meantime I play poker in the evenings, post occassionaly on the forums drive my wife mad and get drunk on Fridays while trying to play poker in the local club. Or is it trying to get drunk while playing poker? I can never remember.
In Response to Re: None of us have jobs? : Without commercialism none of us would be working. Work as we know it was something that came along out of a necessity to earn money in order to pay for things. If you can do something you like to achieve this, great, if not, tough - you've still gotta earn though. I won't get into this debate though cause it's not the place for it! 90% of people working would quit their job in a second if they binked the Euromillions. Posted by died
and the other 10% should have the money taken back off them......
I'm a 3rd Level SysAdmin for a Datacentre based in Reading. Currently I'm on a 2.5 week holiday, (un)fortunately everyone I know is still at work so most of my time has been spent getting in more voloume than I usually otherwise would. Otherwise normally I play most evenings and manage to get home in time for the main event each night :-)
I work for a large Oil Services Company , which is mainly involved in Subsea Construction and Pipelay .Have worked my way up through the ranks over the years and have been involved in some interesting jobs , the Kursk Submarine that sank being one . Has taken me to some nice locations over the years and some not so nice ( Lagos should not on your holiday list ) . Mainly play in the evenings small stakes MTT's and BH's , enjoy the banter with the other players and sometimes get the odd cash .
I am 54 and was a kitchen sales designer before my illness stopped me working 18 months ago,
Glad to say I am like FlyingDagg & the small profit I make playing poker means I can still do things I enjoy, as benefits no way cover living. Hopefully that continues because for me reload isn't an option.
I was sat here today thinking about how many people post on this forum regularly throughout the day. There are a few, and they're not good enough to be pros/play stakes too small. Without naming names they are avid posters in GPC and the Clinic. Very avid. I was wondering if they're actually on the dole or not and how can they afford to sit on Sky all day when they clearly don't make a living from it. I then thought maybe they are students but it seems like they're all quite old. So, what do we all do for a living? I'm a student due to start at Edinburgh uni Looking to go into horticulture and stuff. Posted by died
We have a family business at home, but frankly what the hell as it got to do with you, it doesnt matter if people are u/e or drug dealers lol it should'nt be your concern
I go to university. Sell my body on the streets. And have poker on the side. What's your excuse? Posted by patwalshh
patwalshh you are a star, a great reply to a stupid question, at the end of the day its got nothing to do with him what people do, i think more people should tell him so as well!!!

If you don't think it's of any concern to the original poster, then why are you replying?
On topic: I'm a personal carer, just trying to get back into poker a bit to keep me out of the pubs!

Wow what crawled inside you and died? Next time i meet someone new in the pub i'll refrain from asking them such an offensive question.
'What do you do for a living' 'OH NO SHE DID'N'.
Oh, and if you don't like it don't post.
PS next time try not to be so rude, i know you were probably dragged up but manners cost nothing.
Hi Herbie, I think it was just a curious innocent enquiry from Died & a way to break the ice, nothing malicious. I work a typical Mon-Fri 9-5 office admin/reception/customer service (on rota) jobbie & am trying to make this poker malarkey work on the side! Priyesh (AKA PJ / Jingle). Posted by JingleMa
Hi there, i have to say i'm not too sure, it just strikes me as a snotty nosed student trying to belittle people and insinuate they dont work, if i'm wrong then i'm man enough to appologise but his comments about age etc leave me leaning the other way

just so you know died ive sent you a message and please read it, the last thing i will say on the matter is in one of your responses you said we all need to earn, well your a student and lets face it students basically get by sponging off parents and getting student loans, i see you dont practice what you preach

I do not have a job at the moment. But have worked offshore ,abroad and all over the uk[including xmas and new year] I used to pay £250 stoppages a week on average .In week 1 [tax year 1989] I paid £800 stoppages in one week !A next door neighbor who in the 30 years ive knowned him has never worked, has done a "moody"and "split"up with his wife [£129 a week better off]and i get the grand total of nothing!
In Response to Re: None of us have jobs? : I take it you're not a plumber then? I'd have thought that'd be a cushy 'for life' job. IMO work is something you do to fund the rest of your life. If you enjoy it then great! Posted by died
Work to live not live to work ftw.
Definitely worth trying hard to find a job you will enjoy and asking yourself What are my passions in life? and is it feasible to make a living from a passion or combination of passions.IF you have a family to support you can't afford to be too fussy. Thats why when you are a teenager or young adult it is worth spending a lot of time thinking about things you like doing and researching and analysing whether you can make a living from any of these things. Although it is definitely never to late to switch careers, especially if you happiness is suffering in your current job.

THE REAL REASON
I was hoping that this post would die a death but as it has resurfaced on to page one, i see no reason why i should let people in the forum have my opinion as to why thiswas presented initially.
I find this to be a thinly disguised attack on a particular member of the forum who had a 'discussion' shall we say we this person's fiance the day before on the site about multi-accounting. He was using her id to post messages. This person is not showing interest in the forum....died is attacking one of its members by intimating that their frequent attendance and contribution means that they must be a layabout good for nothing. I find this rather distasteful and feel that you should have taken it up with the person involved privately. This is not a place to settle scores, IMO.
As for jobs...i am not a layabout. I have retired after a mathematics degree and twenty odd years teaching the subject to students who went on to places like Edinburgh to do 'horticulture and stuff'. I had to retire as a family tragedy occurred which upset my epilepsy. I did not choose to leave work...it told me. Life goes on and we should look for new peaks to conquer. For me, poker is an accessible form of entertainment for me to try to improve at. I wish you well with your career but to have some of the opinions you've voiced on your thread when you've hardly dipped your toes into the working world is a little, how can we put it, OTT.
Please come back in ten years and tell us how its all gone for you, smoothly i hope but you must see that life can be a bumpy ride at times. I agree there are people who need to do more with their lives but just because they take an interest and spend time on hear does not mean that they have fulfilling worthwhile lives. TommyD, for example, is a teacher and very successful player who does charity work for hospital radio etc. He's on here a lot, writes an interesting diary but has a real world life too.
I could see you were angry in your post because i knew what had gone before but this wasn't the way to go. I wish you a lot of success in the future and a happy marriage.
I only decided to comment as its come back into the forefront and feel that people should know the truth. TBH, i guess some did have an idea that it was a bit of a put down by some of the answers i read. Well now you know guys.
