Your "ah haa" moment

edited November 2009 in Poker Chat
Idk, something less corny, like, a big revelation you had, whether from reading a forum post, or listening to an interview or watching a coaching video, whatever.

Mines was probably krantz explaining the "getty" theorem I think it was called, which stated that the 3rd bet (4th bet pre) to go into the pot on dry boards was almost always a bluff.

I then immediately 5b shoved J8cc @ 50NLHU and the guy folded.

I just stared at the screen like someone had given me the keys to the world.

    *Yeti Theorem

cant really think of any ah ha moments. maybe learning about timing tells and how accurate they are vs donks like 90% of the time or manipulating timing tells vs good players so they triple barrell you with air while you have the nuts.

Or watching Raptor videos and realising theres other bet sizes other than 2/3rds pot.

I remember reading caros book of tells, one of the more common ones against novices was , if you look as tho you are going to bet and they start counting out their chips, they are weak.

I was in a casino playing pl200 and there was quite a big pot, I wasnt really sure about pl at the time and had repped a strong hand up til the turn, even tho I didnt have a hand.  I asked the dealer what was the most I could bet, as she was counting the pot, the other lad picked up the wad of notes under his chips and started counting them aggressively.
I thought hmmmmm.....I wonder.  I bet this amount and the lad folded.

I was soo chuffed with myself lol

Even tho theres probably been many 'better' content vids, I think the one where things started to click into place for NLHE was MDM13's one on 2p2.  Such a great content video.

So like, i'll just set up a hand to illustrate it.

Heads up No limit Hold'em $1/$2

    Player 1: $300
    Player 2: $300

    Player 1: Raises $7
    Player 2: calls

    ($14) Flop: Kh4s3c

    Player 2: checks
    Player 1: bets $11
    Player 2: Raises to $29
    Player 1: Raises to $83

Ok so at this point, It doesn't make any sense for player one to have a hand as strong as top pair, since, If he's going to stack off, the most profitable way would be to flat call Player 2's check/raise. This is because the board is so dry that there are no real scare cards that can come on the turn so protecting his hand is not an issue, so he may aswell extact the maximum from the bluffs in player 2's range. When he re-re-raises (3 bets), he is (from his perspective) killing his value from the times player 2 barrels the turn, and only getting it in with made hands that get it in on the turn anyway. Since, clearly, this is bad, we can assume that a large percentage of the time player 1 is bluffing.

    Player 2: Raises All-in
    Player 1: Folds

    Player 2: Shows Js6c
    Player 1: Weeps gently

    No problem.

So, since you're here, what was your revelation?

    Hi guys,

Unfortunately I have had to remove a few posts from this thread as I’m afraid we don't allow links to other poker forums. You can certainly post direct links to videos if this helps, just not via another forum. Thank you for your understanding in this matter

Haven't really had any revelations in poker, i've played for 3 years across different sites and have never been down on original investment. Of course I have got better and i'd put that to trial and error coupled with listening to the best players around.

Also, I think it's important not to be scared of anyone in poker. I don't care if it's stupid, put me in a 6 seat STT which is my bread and butter and i'll back myself to be a winner.

I wouldn't say scared is the right word. However to be aware of anyone at the table who is better than you is important.

That way you can either leave, if they have position on you, or you can just not play pots with them unless you have the nutz.

Think alot of people just take a punt when playing poker and have the "it's all about the cards" philosophy. But w/e not important.
