I think you played it fine mate, I like your raise pre and on the flop maybe a check call after that would be better but you just got unlucky really.

how should i play big pairs in future? what sort of things should i be on the look out for when playing ie an A on the flop is bad for me, what cards should i be playing?
also what books or video/dvd/programs should i be reading/watching to improve?

BTW, has anyone got any ideas on what learning material to get on poker?? or rather whats the best to get??
A good effort m8. I think opening raise is fine. You made him pay to see cards. He was lucky to catch tbh. And then you were unlucky to catch K and be behind. It was the poker gods kicking you in the teeth as it were.
As for learning well there's so much it's knowing where to start. There are good sites that explain the fundamentals and are free. Put something like nlhe starting hands in for 6 max and you'll get a load of articles and charts to use.. Pick one that you gel with and use it as your tutor.
There is so much from starting hands, bet sizing, play with particular stack sizes etc that its impossible to put it in a sentence. I will say that the more effort you put into your poker the better you will play. It won't stop you from getting bad beats but it will help you make mathematically good bets which is all you can do before the poker gods intervene. Gl m8 and i hope you enjoy the game for what it is. Learn the basics, don't spend to much in the meantime and improve your game as you play.
