Just starting to play a few more Tourneys - i am managing by playing tight to get into the cash quite frequently, but then i have trouble setting up the gears - is it just the case you  start to play more marginal hands

i managed to finish 2nd in this weeks 15k bounty hunter, but when i got into the cash , i played super aggressive, it just felt i was playing poker by the seat of my pants.

is there a more educated way of playing once your in the cash

There's a great book called 'Winning Poker Tournaments: One Hand At A Time'. Volume 1 deals with everything upto and including the bubble, Volume 2 covers everything once you've cashed up to (hopefully) winning it.

IMO the further you get into tournaments the more you need to focus on picking your opponents. Pick up on which players are tight and are easy to steal blinds from, which ones are very loose who you can 3bet allin with a worse hand than yuo normally would etc etc.
