London Poker Tournaments and £1/£1 Cash?

edited January 2013 in Poker Chat
Hi all, sorry if this seems off topic for you online guys, but after the death of the escellent value Bubble (Pub) Poker League, Roy Houghton’s Loose Cannons, The LPC, The International, and now Fox Poker, I can’t see anywhere that has a good selection of £1/£1 cash  and decent structured tournaments... apart from Aspers at Straford, and The Grosvenor Vic.

Am I missing any other venues? There doesn’t seem to be a great deal of choice out there, now that The Fun Police have shut these fine poker boutiques down.

The Hippodrome only has £1/2 and no tourneys; the Empire tournaments don’t seem to have great value structures at all, and there’s only £1/£2 there too; The Cromwell Mint seems OK, but again only £1/2 cash and the tournament entries are a little steeper than I like playing as a purely recreational (by which I mean ‘losing’), player.

Any suggestions or tips greatly received... otherwise I’m backing to playing online in my pants and throwing lap-tops out of windows. And nobody wants to see that.

Never been there but I think the Golden Nuggent down Shaftsbury Ave has 1/1 cash.  Not sure as to the quality or if they ever do tournies there though.

There's a casino with a poker room in Kensington as well but for the life of me I can't remember the name of it.

Fwiw I think your best bet for tournaments are the ones you have mentioned, but £40 only gets you a turbo in the vic and the cheapest tournie in Stratford is the £20 + £5 re-entry, and I hate paying that much rake personally.  I usually venture to the Genting in Southend when my mate wants to drive there...

Brilliant, thanks for all your suggestions guys.

Tommy: I think the Kensington one is now the Genting Cromwell Mint I might be werong there)... The London Poker Circuit used to go to the Kensington Close Hotel, but that's obviously all finished. The only other Kensington-ish place I can think of is The Palm Beach, but that's too high-priced for me.

Agboy: Thanks, I'd forgotten about Big Slick. It is indeed good, but it's a pain to get to, and most of my mates won't travel out that far, but you're absolutely right; it's a good place for an ocassional journey.

Willhelm/Tommy: Thanks, I'd also forgotten about The Golden Nugget, I'll give them a call and see what they've got.

    Thanks again all, much appreciated.

That might be the one.  Opposite one of the big parks if memory serves on a major road.  Yeah I kind of thought Palm Beach wasn't you were looking for.

wednesday night at the cromwell mint is pretty decent for the £50 BI inc dealer bonus, you get 22k starting (inc early bird, 20k without) and a 20 min clock. plays pretty well
Sundays £20+5 rebuy/add on is a nice tournie for the money as well.
Cash games are pretty loose £1/£2 which can end up playing like a £2/5 and on some nights like a £5/10.

I think the river card club in stanmore might run a £1/1 with decent looking tournies - keep meaning to check this out as im only 10 mins away but the mint is a nicer environment to play in

I like the idea of you playing online in just your pants......or did you mean playing pants online?

Good to hear from you Nut.....missed your wit around these parts for far too long. Hope you are well. How did that online business go BTW?

Hi Maxally, good to see you again sir. I meant playing in my pants, and I’m mildly concerned that you’re enjoying that mental image, sir. It even turns my wife’s stomach, and there have been periods in her life when she’s quite enjoyed my company.

The online business was going very well actually, but typical me, I got distracted with other projects and haven’t devoted much time to it in the past 6 months. It ticks over, but I ought to do something with it, or sell it really.

Thanjks again for your replies guys, much appreciated. And thanks mj8bs, that particular tournament is exactly the game I’m after – a good value deep stack!

The G casino on Piccadilly Circus also offers a single 1/1 game. It's a bit unusual as it's on the main floor with all the casino games and is I think prob 8 handed max. Can be good value though and worth a look if there's a waiting list at the Nugget

Ah... The G on Piccadilly. That memory makes me moist around the gills, Simonnatur.

There’s just one tiny table, in the shape of an orange segment (and about the same size, if I’m being factual). The dealer would occupy the flat side, and eight drunk players would be bunched shoulder to shoulder on the other side, one of them eagerly nudging a mate’s knees under the table when they were trying to ‘subtly telegraph’ that they’d just picked up pocket aces.

I used to play there with a guy that the dealers nicknamed ‘Suicide’, because of his penchant for playing only with the black chips. *sigh... balmy days.

I’m being flippant, but I spent a long time loving that place, because you never knew what you were going to get: There just wasn’t a regular crowd as it wasn’t a poker destination, so sometimes it was easy money, and other times it was a tough game.

It was pokers’ equivalent of a Lucky Bag.

heard whispers that the drome of hippos is being taken over by one of the bad 'other poker sites' that just know happens to be in control of two of the best softwared sites....... that'll be sickness.

otherwise Royal surrey snooker club in SW, or Lucky Chance in Walthamstow NE. Big bluff on green lanes in North London. Highly advise you to stay away from the  Western in NW (terrible shady venue).
