because of him holding a small stake  i was thinking he was doing all or nothing with a straight draw himself so went with the call but i am starting to find i could loosing a lot more than i win with chaseing these draws
when would it be worth calling drawing hands?

If he does have an overpair, he is a favourite to win.

We get our money in with draws when we have some fold equity and good equity in the hand... you can't make him fold cos he's all in, and your chances of making the straight with 1 card to come are not great.

When thinking about calling off with draws, you can do it purely by maths, know your chances of making your hand and whether the pot is offering you the correct odds. When someone overbet shoves for like 2.5 times the size of the pot, you're virtually never gonna have the odds to call.
