over pairs after preflop

edited January 2013 in The Poker Clinic

over pairs seem to have cost me quite a bit today and what i am starting to wonder is would it be best to just fold most of the time when faced with a shove after the flop? It comes after what i saw the villian was holding in these hands
the first hand i relate to i can't find but it is in my diary post and relates to a KK being call by a 105 and 54 thanksfully i had the sense to fold but this second one i relate to i did the call and for a villian who raised to 20p preflop to hold a hand like this must be brand new to poker

the worst thing about it was that the Q6 was not even suited
of course this does not mean to say i will always fold e.g. very raggy boards with no ovious straights or flushes likely

Im not really sure about your bet sizing on the turn tbh. Youve bet less than 1/3rd of the pot. If the villain thinks any Q, 2 or any 7 is good then he prob thinks hes getting the odds to call. I also prob pop it up a touch more on the flop if Im going to take an aggressive line. I prob fold to the pot river bet as well.

You should definitely bet the turn card bigger here, something like £1.40 sounds about right to me. The bet sizing of the villain on the flop instantly makes me think he does not have a clue what he is doing and while your 9s are likely ahead it seems he has 'something' due to his call of your reraise (which incedently is a little small). A bet of 40p on the turn at lower levels like these is going to be called pretty much 100% of the time into that pot if he has connected at all and you are going to hate a lot of river cards and be no clearer as to what sort of hand he has. I'd probably be looking to take this down on the turn or charge him if he's calling with a weaker hand. As played river is probably a fold but read dependant it could be a call sometimes.
