holding 77 with 22BB is it a call or shove?

edited February 2013 in The Poker Clinic

villian raised and the button calls making me wonder because their is two already in and the BB will probably call aswell. as i hold 77 should i attempt the shove knowing that my position could lead to difficulty from the flop on depending on what cards appear if i just called.

Yep nice spot to shove.  If the player on the button hadnt called tho i would call instead of jam tho not to set mine as were not deep enough but to mess with him on some flops. But as player on button has called its a nice spot for a jam.

i guess i did manage to do one thing correct, when i saw the villian them call i was expecting an Ax or Kxs i didn't think he would have called K10o considering how much of his stack is at risk. lucky for him he got the 10 on the river so i was then knocked out and finished 12th

But you never should without serious reads. These are the lovely spots to 3bet jam that help us build a stack in the middle to late stages of an MTT.

Get folds and you add like 5.5xBB to your stack which is not to be sniffed at in the late stages, get called and you're likely flipping as a favourite anyway :)

It's less of a shove if X has a really tight opening range. It's also less of a shove if X is liable to call with marginal holdings.

Generally speaking, against most players this is a great spot to shove: The dead money represents 23% of your stack. So often you'll just take that dead money down without a showdown and alot of the times you don't you'll be in a coin-flip. Sometimes you're going to be dominated but the times you take down that 2200 will more than make up for the times you're a 20% dog.
