Calling all Omaha players

edited April 2013 in Poker Chat

How did first get into Omaha?

Once you tried it, did you stick with it?

Do you play omaha sometimes an holdem others depending how you feel?

Do you think playing Omaha improves your holdem game?

  • edited March 2013
Only been able to play it once, not enough micro omaha traffic
  • edited March 2013
Played it a few times, much like my Holdem game i suck at cash. Got a very good record in omaha mtts tho - small sample though, 2 FTs outa 2 attempts, one win one second.

I had never played Omaha until it appeared on the site. Totally self taught, didnt even know the rules when i first started, just jumped straight in & went from there lol.

Love the game, but hate the swings & swongs. Learns you to deal with bad beats in Holdem alot easier (which is good) :) If you like action, this is the game for you (you will find holdem cash boring)

Play Omaha badly most nights if the games are running. Find it hard though when multi tabling MTTs aswell, most nl50 regs will clarify this....

Will be donating tonight if anyone fancies a game

Loaded a Omaha DYM by mistake and cashed ! lol
Got more interested with Jocks challenge , really enjoyed that.
Would play more if tables would fill up quicker.

    Dear Skypoker,

I love omaha.  I was really enjoying learning it by playing the freerolls you ran at the weekends. Why did you take these off?  Another "business decision" by the suits?  ;-(

I 1st got into when the forum done the FLOPS competion which had omaha in it so gave it a go and ended up 2nd in the mtt obv made lot of mistakes but we all do when we start.

i`ve also been playing quite a lot of omaha cash recently its juat an awesome game, I love the action and even though I think im pretty much down on the game so far  i have learned a lot just by playing in the short period of time and also bought a omaha book which i`m nearly finished it has hi/lo included so that will be my next game to improve.

just wish there was more tables goin on sky usually on a good night only get 2-3 goin between 5/20nl but i just play NL at same time to add more tables.

Omaha is the best drug on the market

I absolutely love Omaha and don't play it nearly as much as I'd like to.

I first played it by mistake (as I guess alot of us do) loading up an sng on another site and wondering why I had 4 cards and what I was supposed to do with them.  Unlike others who who tell stories of binking their first game without having a clue, I had no such luck and bombed in spectacular fashion vowing never to play the stupid game again!

Then not long after I joined Sky, Tikay ran a learn to play Omaha type night where he would sit on a low stakes Omaha table and play all comers and help them pick up the game.  I had also done a little reading prior to this so at least knew what to do with my 4 cards now.  Anyways, I was lucky enough to get a seat on a table with Tikay and he was his usual genial self at the tables and chatted throughout giving advice on what to look for in starting hands and other basic stuff whilst taking my full buy in from me.

That experience ignited my interest in the game, and I've become a massive fan since then and have a hope to play alot more Omaha, particularly PLO8 which I just adore in the future and have recently entered the Omaha game at the World Championship of Amateur Poker which I'm really looking forward to.

As far as helping your Holdem game, I think it is a MASSIVE help, it's brilliant for really teaching you to analyse flop textures and draw potential and to adjust to different textures as a board develops.  I'd say that playing Omaha was one of the most sucessful methods I have used to improve my Holdem game.

I love Omaha, particularly Hi Lo, which has more draws than marks and spencer.  I particularly like the fact that you may be all in and your tournament is not necessarily at risk due to split pots.  This also means that players cannot sit tight and wait for opponents to get it all in and knock each other out.

A very strategic game which in my opinion knocks spots off of holdem.

Hopefully the software that will enable Sky to show Omaha on TV will help to popularise the game with the masses that exclusively play Holdem.

A quick question for Sky, will this software be able to televise Hi Lo tables?

As anyone who has read the forum lately will know I am a massive Omaha fan. PLO in particular

Omaha is a thinking mans game, especially Pot lImit.  It's a game where pot odds, position, board texture are much more important than in hold'em.  It's not just a case of shoving all you chips in pre and saying "Call that if you're man enough"  In my opinion nothing ruins a game of Omaha more than adding the letters "NL" to it

How did I get into it....  by mistake of course,  thought I'd registered for DYM Hold'em and suddenly I was holding 4 cards, not two.  I think this is probably how 90% of the people who play it on Sky first get an experience of the game

In terms of helping your hold'em game, yes it does.. massively.  As I said you become far more aware of the advantage of position, what the board texture means to your hand.  Calculating your odds of hitting your draws etc.  All of which is equally important in hold'em but sadly most players do not pay close attention to.

One thing you do have to be aware of if you switch bewteen the two games is the "Omaha" mindset.  In Omaha if you don't have the nutz, someone else usually does.  Sometimes when I play Hold'em after an Omaha session I find myself putting my opponents on too narrow a range, thinking they always have the hand that beats me.  makes you play too tight

I am very lucky because my local Casino runs a live Omaha tournament every Tuesday night.  It is a great game to play live,  especially when you have three players going at it  saying "pot" after "pot" after "pot" then you get to watch the dealers head explode ;o)

We recently ran an Omaha challenge which was well supported by the players on Sky and Sky_Dave provided some prizes for the top 6 finishers.  I'm currently thinking of something else to follow on from that and hopefully we will have another promotion to get more people playing this brilliant version of Poker

Just in case you didn't pick up onit... I love Omaha ;o)

I registered for couple of DYM's by mistake.  I was lucky enough to win them so thought I better learn the game.

Now I play Omaha 80% of the time.  Great game when you learn it.  Think if I had to play NL Holdem all the time I would get bored.

I stumbled upon omaha by registering in the wrong HU game a while ago, have recently started to play the odd plo Hu sng game as i find it is a fun break from holdem and will probably learn a bit more about the game in the summer. Not many HU plo games run though at the lower stakes, there is some hi-lo regs but i have no idea how to play it and when i have accidentily regged i have had no idea why i have won some pots and why they have been split etc

    Guys,

If any of you want to play some low-staked PLO, or PLO8,  be it cash, Tourneys or DYM's, I'm happy to devote an evening or two every week to it, & then, the next day, we can do a follow-up thread based on how it went, & exchange views, answer questions etc.

Beginners (Low Stakes) ONLY for now.

I can only help with fundamentals & basics, nothing high-level, but, in truth, these basics are VERY IMPORTANT in Omaha - it is NOT Texas Hold Em, nor is it anything like it.

I can probably do Tuesday or Wednesday most weeks if anyone is interested.

I would love to give more time to Omaha and Hilo. Really enjoy playing both variants but MTT only not really a cash player. I fisrt dabbled with Omaha on aanother site for fun money. I rediscovered it on here when I regged for a Omaha in error. Would like to get involved and try and improve my game.

Very new to omaha, still learning the basics, but would definitely be up for some more micro (or low low) stakes play in the evenings, all play is part of the learning experience :)

Note v small br, so dont really play cash games, more sng or mtt

I got into omaha purely out of curiosity. I occasionally play it although mostly NLHE, as not alot of traffic to micro stakes sng most nights.

    Tikay,

May I suggest that some £1.10 buy in tournaments are scheduled for whatever evening it may be.  These run during the day for Hi Lo and attract between 15 and 25 players.  The higher buy in tournaments in the evening attract fewer players and sometimes do not run at all.

An evening with a £1.10 Omaha and an Omaha Hi Lo would attract more players to give it a go, and would be affordable to all bankrolls.

I would defo be interested. Would suggest  a £1.10 and £5.50 MTT of both Omaha and Omaha hi-lo. Perhaps it could be 1 night a week and a league be introduced of some sort with perhaps your best 2 scores being counted each week.

I can't recall what got me started on Omaha, but I quickly preferred it to hold'em. I played Omaha almost exclusively for a 3 month period about 18 months ago. Due to the limited MTT schedule and the extremely small fields I got bored. I also got more involved in the community and with the exception of FLOPS none of the community comps include any Omaha.

I'd be happy to join a weekly Omaha night. Also, please bring back the Omahartigan league.

Hi TK, excellent idea. I remember you saying on a recent show that a league of some description was being discussed. I am sure that a PLO and PLo8 league, similar to the one that JH ran a while ago would be very well received.
Of the 2 nights you suggested i think Tuesday would get more support due to the Community comp. on Wednesdays and as previously suggested perhaps 2 low buy in MTTs, 1 of each run over a 4/6 week period with the usual prizes as a n incentive.
Obviously you would need some help with the league tables(tongue in cheek) but i am sure there would be plenty of volunteers to do this.

Coiuld i also suggest that consideration be given to reinstating the 500gtd rebuy that used to run on Fridays at about 10pm. This didnt quite hit its guarantee most weeks but did come very close and if it was brought back at say 400 gtd for a trial perhaps it would work, especially as there seems to be a lot more interest in Omaha than there used to be.

Id love to get into Omaha ive only played the odd dym here and there but if we could get a night a week semi devoted to it that wud be great, since tuesdays are already turbo tuesday themed would wednesdays be better? then maybe time taken to get the best hands from it shown on thursdays show? id prefer tourneys/dyms over cash but will take part in whatever

This is Tikays time to shine :) I gather from him he is a million times better omaha player than hold em given his near FT last year WSOP, so we can all learn from the wise elder again yay, will bring me back to when i first started watching sky and learning holdem from him :P hope u play a few Omaha tourneys @ wsop this year teeks

Very happy to play a night or two each week, starting next week, if you guys are up for it.

It will be primarily micro-limit games, as the idea is for people to learn the game at minimum cost. Please remember that Omaha is a brutal game, & anyone who complains at bad beats in Hold Em should not even contemplate playing Omaha.

Happy to play the Site minimum stakes which are....

    Cash Omaha (2p-4p) & PLO8 (smallest stake is 5p-10p).

    DYM (minumum stake Omaha = £0.60) & PLO8 (minimum stake £2.10).

Tournaments in either format, min stakes are, I think, £1.10 & £3.30.

It is NOT ideal to play Omaha & PLO8 at the same time, so we should have seperate nights or weeks for each.

    Maybe....

    Week 1 - PLO Tourneys

    Week 2 - PLO8 Tourneys

    Week 3 - PLO DYM

    Week 4 - PLO8 DYM

    Week 5 - PLO Cash

    Week 6 - PLO8 Cash.

If some warmth is shown for the idea, or a different mix or suggestion is made, fine by me.

Let me know, & we'll get it started.
