SPT Notts - some Sky Players banned!

It's hard to comment on the spcifics as I wasn't at Nottingham this weekend. However, in Birmingham there was a lot of drunkenness, and that seems to have carried over to Nottingham. Loud drunk people on a rail are never an addition to an event. Someone stewing quietly in a corner can be ignored.
The venues must take a degree of responsibility. If you serve someone 20 shots of Sambuca, you can't be too shocked if they get drunk.
I think expelling the people who were drunk earlier would have been far more sensible than a lifetime ban. We do things in our youth that we aren't proud of in our older years. A lifetime's ban for one night's disgression seems an excessive response - however, they make their rules, and are allowed to act as they please.
I'm sure the whole incident will have been forgotten by DTD (other than their computer ban list), and that they probably ban people every week. It won't reflect on Sky, but that doesn't mean we don't have a collective responsibility to act better at SPTs. A few drinks and a laugh are fine - it IS a social event, but sense must prevail.

There is a reluctance from venues to expel anyone at a third party event. They don't want to spoil anyone's weekend, and I know that if it were a normal Saturday at their club then people behaving like that would have been removed from the club earlier. They tried very hard not to reach the stage where a ban was necessary, out of a sensibility to Sky poker and its Tour who had in effect hired the club's facilities/staff/dealers etc for the weekend, but were left with no choice

I reiterate that a couple of bans from DTD at one event has no implication going forward for SPTs at DTD

I have never been to a SPT
But I've been to bars clubs and casinos, where disturbances are commonplace.

Since joining Sky i've read thousands of great posts about events.
This incident is a mere blip when measured against all the positives!

I'm sure those who strayed will be devastated, embarassed and full of remorse at what happened.
Would it not be a good idea to learn from our mistakes.
Close the thread and try to prevent similar instances happening again?
  • edited July 2013
    Thanks fr the response, SPT.
I understand that the behavior in question went beyond the pale. However, an expulsion (however unpalatable that may be when soneone has hired the venue) must be preferable to a ban.
At the end of the day, we are all responsible for our own actions. I think closing this thread would serve no purpose. Perhaps a tagline to the next even could remind players that their behavior should not fall below the standard expected, but then again, we're all adults, and should know when to stop.
Persoanally, I am saddened for the people involved who (certainly in one case) are profoundly embarassed by their actions. As I say, a night's indiscretion for a lifetime ban. We live and learn.

In Response to Re: SPT Notts - Sky Players banned! : This is where social awareness is meant to comes into play, hence my comment about the people who only come out at christmas going over the top and using the "I was only having fun" excuse. It's always fun at poker event's be they sky events or others promoters. But being acting like a 10 year old down the play barn is not fun. I do genuinely think some SPT players only get out when going to a SPT. Have fun, enjoy yourself, but respect all others who have also come along for a good night. Feeling like you've stumbled accross a council estate BBQ with people who cannot handle their drink IS NOT FUN! An if your idea of someone enjoying themselves is seeing them get blind drunk and make an idiot of themselves then you really need to change your friends and get out more. I do agree though MOST Sky players have a fantastic fun time, have a great laugh, meet some new friends and DO NOT make idiots of themselves. You can always go to a club after the tourament to let of steam, that's me and my mates do.

I think this debate has got out of hand in places.

I feel both players regret there actions, in fact i have spoken to both and that is pretty clear.

However as far as im aware ample warning was given and DTD acted in what they thought was best, which they have every right too do.

As for comparing an SPT to a council house estate BBQ, i can assure you to go to 99% of SPTs this isnt the case. yes you have many like myself who do live on a housing estate, and like BBQs and many other who are different from higher class backgrounds. I also struggle to see how, weather someone lives on a housing estate or a mansion in the middle of some rich estate effects someones ability to drink.

I also suggest you find out the background of the players before suggesting such jibbersish

Ok, I aplogise for the council estate BBQ comment it was un-needed, I also grew up on the estates. But people need to understand these kind of things can tarnish an event. Do you want the day after a sky event the regulars coming back to "their" local casino to be told stories by the staff of what a mess the SPT was? Ok its a VERY VERY small number of "guests" playing up. But it can spread and get worse from venue to venue if its seen as acceptable behaviour at SPT event.

Wouldn't you like to see the SPT's become the UK's premier poker events? with big numbers and huge cash pots to play for? Yes the "community" feel is part of the SPT, But that is not a licence for a few to ruin a fantastic night for the many.

I think EVERYONE will take note of this, and the next SPT will have all the fun of every other event but the minority will of learned what is acceptable, fun, banter, railing...An what is just general anti social drunkeness.

I really don't think the SPT ever will, or even wants to compete with the GUKPT or UKIPT.

Excellent weekend as a whole, shame that the minority spoilt it for the majority - top venue and professionally managed.

Sky crew were excellent and I don't think any events will portray the entire sky community as "bad", I mean as someone said "the people involved will probably regret their own actions, and must understand that sky have to do something about it and 99.9% of us players are grown up enough to respect everyone else, I mean I am the first person to have a drink, or two or 20..... but I then don't find the urge to become aggressive to everyone else and do what ever was alleged to have occurred.

All good all round - and as Tikay said we are welcomed back in October and am sure they are used to these regrettable situations, that yes shouldn't happened, but occasionally do.

Plus we all make mistakes as we are only human beings!

Big thanks to DTD and all its croupiers, waiters - staff, and Mr Trumper, plus the sky crew including Mr Prew, Orford and Tikay and everyone else involved in the hardwork that they put in over before and during the SPT- really enjoyed it and hope to make Newcastle in 6 weeks.

Just wanted to say that the DTD was a great venue and the security team is amazing and dealt with these minor – yes minor cases of drunken behavior very professionally.

It’s quite sad that a thread has been started about it but I am sure Geldy means no malice.

Yes a mere 2% of Sky player had a bit too much drink and had to be escorted off the premises because casinos do not tolerate loud drunk aggressive behavior.

And yes maybe they regret it, hopefully they will now fully understand that a casino is not a bar/club and because people are playing with money they have to impose tough but fair restrictions on behavior.

I for one had a fantastic time and can’t wait for the next one.

I'd rather be around fun people having fun, even if the odd one crosses the line once in a while, than a room full of miserable people with headphones and Ipads who won't say 3 words all night.

IMO they should ban all moaning Germans over 6ft ;) lol.

Seriously tho, DTD is not like Newc/Blackpool which kinda expect the more party orientated customers. Its serious and TBH I found this last year while playing snogs and really I can understand that ys lot being ultra loud was annoying the bigger stakes cash players. They were happy to let us play tho if we kept it down and charged us no rake.

This year much the same, I got drunk and prob a little loud but not leary enough to receive a ban so they do accept it to a certain point. I think most like a drink and a catch up and sometimes when donked the games decide to get drunk and have a laugh. Blames Orford!

Well my point made rather badly I will agree is... There is a time and a place for everything. At a SPT it is possible to come away thousand and thousands of pounds better off than when you arrived. Just because someone doesn't get blind drunk and make plonker of themselves does not make them boring. The guy sitting at the table with headphones on being quiet during a poker game may well be the loudest drunkest craziest guy you'll ever meet when he is in Ibiza with mates. A little courtesy and consideration for those around you and an understanding of the enviroment you're in is all that is needed. Why should the main talking point of an SPT be someone getting banned?
    Posted by OHIMGOOD
It seems we have a difference of opinion here, nothing wrong with that.

In my opinion if you're going to an SPT just for the poker you're doing it wrong. There are live poker tournaments everywhere every single day where you can be around the silent types with headphones. There is a good reason people travel from all over the country to an SPT.

Obviously everybody should know where the line is and avoid crossing it, but DTD is somewhat known for their no fun policy.

PS: I wasn't there last weekend, so my comments are meant to be general, not specific to anything that may or may not have happened.

Look, the people in question have said they regret it and are embarrassed etc. IMO, just ring up DTD one evening and ask to speak to Simon personally if he will take your call (if not leave a number) apologise to him for everything and I'd be very surprised if he didn't allow you back in to spend money in his card room. He is a big softy really under that shell, especially when it comes to females. The final is only a few months away and will be back at DTD like many other SPTS's will be in the future so it's probably the worst place you could get banned from.

Oh and to the people having a go at Geldy for starting this thread, I can promise you he didn't mean for this thread to go like this. As he said he was genuinely worried about SPT's not being allowed at DTD anymore. The beauty of SPT's is you get to meet the faces behind the avatar, and to me for what ever reason I always see every new avatar as a 20 yr old guy trying the get rich quick tactic (like I was when I started). I met Geldy and he is a middle aged man who wears a suit and lives in a nice area of London. Not really the type of person to start a gossiping thread.
