Surely this is a 'no brainer'? U cant have 1 without the other. U cnt enjoy losing money, so obviously you try and win. If u do, u enjoy it. If u lose, u dont. If ur making a profit and still not enjoying it, you MUST be already loaded and the money means nowt to ya. Anyone who says they enjoy playing if theyre losing all the time, has either got a scre/w loose, or is a liar! The amount of posts I read moaning about bad beats etc etc - These guys must be losing, and are clearly not enjoying it. Play to win - Therefore, the only answer is profit! - Which results in enjoyment :) DOHH

"There are better ways to make money"

"What if you have to grind and grind to make a profit and it isn't fun anymore

A couple of comments that just aren't true.

    1) The first comment, there are easier ways yes, if u r a professional footballer, or a pornstar or summat, but if ur option is to go out n get a 'proper' job, or make money doing this, sat at home with a can of beer, feet up, watching cricket and horse racing, whilst making money playing on ur computer,(2days plan, lol) I know which most wud rather do.

Ive just graduated from uni, got all the qualifications to teach. Fortunately these qualifications are for life, and will never go out of date, so if the poker goes wrong, I have the 'proper job' option, but although its something Ive always wanted to do, no way is it better or easier than making money at online poker!

    2) A couple of people have noted that grinding at cash tables for so many hours a week can't be enjoyable. There are so many options at online poker, every sort of game you can think of is available somwehere online - If ur fed up of grinding, play something else!

Personally cash is my preference, but I dnt think I can be described as a grinder. Some people do grind, its a game of styles, Im sure if they didnt enjoy it they wouldnt do it! Imagine having to get up and go to work as a binman or a brikkie or a traffic warden on a morning like this! Might not fancy it, but u wud still have to go in. Sum1 cud wake up n not fancy playing poker - the options there 24/7 - go bak to bed till 1 o clock then get up n try agen ;)

Theres so many advantages if your mindset is to make a profit! - In life if you arent determined to be a winner, u wont win. Look at Alex Ferguson, Wayne Rooney, they love what they do, no1 can love football more than Wayne Rooney, but he HATES losing. He hates losing that much, that he hardly ever loses! Co-incidence?

For u guys who say u dnt mind losing, try changing ur mindset, get selfish, play for u, play hard, play to win, and ur results might change! (if they dont, uve  not lost anything coz u dnt mind losing neway!) lol

Waffled abit but hope Ive got my point across sumhow!

You do get your point accross DOHHH and for someone like you who obviously has asperations of playing full time for a living for as long as you can then your right. But remember that without those willing to lose and carry on there is no profit for you. Many people found that after the moneymaker effect they could play for a living online as all the fish swam onto P stars looking to make a million. eThe Pro's took their money and what do you think would have happened if they had all decided to swim off again????? that's right, your back to pro's playing pro's and the money just passing from one to another (minus 5% for the site). Without the section of the poker community willing to play for fun and take any money as a bonus then there is NO profit in the game. Unless your good enough (and rolled enough) to sit with £10k on lolufolds table and win, then you have to accept at the lower stakes your profit will come one way or another from losing players. (even if you take it from a winning one then he will have got it from a losing one). To say nobody should play with this mind set is cutting off your oxygen mate
  • edited December 2009

Haha Im not saying if your a losing player you should quit! - Nor am I trying to drive away my 'oxygen supply'.

Im saying the mindset of these 'losing players' should be to win, and not just to enjoy the game! Even if ur at 1p-2p, u arent sat there to lose are you. Its a game, its pointless playing if you aren't trying to win, and therefore make money!

Im nowhere near the stakes u talked about in ur post, Ive £12k in my poker bank balance over a 6 year period Only played seriously for 10 months, the previous 5 years were spent messing about, learning by losing, trying different games, tournys etc. Ive found my level where I consistantly win, (25/50 pence - hardly breaking the bank). During these 5 years I was still trying to win and therefore make a profit, every time I sat down.

If you arent trying to win, you aren't gonna win, its like playing snooker with ya bad hand. Mentality, mindset and psychology are so important in poker. U need to think clearly about what ya want to do, and how ur gonna do it.

Ur aim as a losing player shudnt be to carry on losing but enjoy losing, it shud be to get better, and enjoy winning. A losing player aint a losing player for life, its a game anyone can play, and do well at.

Agreed, and please don't take the stakes comment as a slight on your ability. I've seen you play , looked you up on sharkscope and have to say i find you a good player with inventive style (your plays as brash as your forum post's sometimes but no bad thing in my opinion lol), you describe yourself as a cash player but your tourny ratings are very good and i can see your obviously doing well.

You advanced in your play because of your mentality and desire to improve, but at all levels there will be those that desire to improve but either won't put in the time (or don't have it in my case lol) or can't pick up anything above basic concepts, these players are either playing for fun or as one poster said they concentrate on the few times they win and seem to block out all the loses. Lets face it Dohhhh..... Nobody wants ALL they players to improve mow do they lol ????

May be a bit of clarification is required for my answer to this.

1/ The main reason I play is enjoyment,

2/ I do try to win every time I play, but I accept this can't happen every time.

    3/ I don't want to lose

    4/ I want to win

5/ In an ideal world I would be playing for profit and enjoying it.

Until I get my skills up to the level where 5/ is the norm i need to carry on playing, learning and improving but if I did not enjoy doing it I would quit,

Yes, I know it's -ve in the short term but I really believe that in the long term my outlook on the game will have a +ve and at present I think I am getting closer to that tipping point where I stop being a losing player and maybe become a break even player, the next progression is then to become a winning player.

However I also think I have an edge on some folks already in so much as I know at present Iam a losing player because I try to keep accurate track on my poker finances whereas some other folks who think they are winners may actually be losers but can't admit it ( or maybe not )

I'm not sure how accurate the following is but it is from several on line sources who all quote similar figures :-

    Q/

What percentage of online poker players actually win more than lose?

A/ Over the course of any extended period of time, roughly 5-7% of online poker players actually sustain a positive Return on Investment.

But the figures pretty much tell the story .......

Oh, and my ROI at present on SKY  ?

    SnGs = + 6 %
    All Games = - 1%

Thats kind of what i was touching on in my first post FBS. You read in threads all the time about people not being losing players but the fact is that there can't possibly be as many people in fron tas there are that claim it, otherwise there would be no profit for those who actually are winning lol

So by virtue of the fact that the MAJORITY of players are behind then they are either waiting for that one big score, or they are playing just for fun. I doubt any one starts a game and thinks i'm going to love throwing some money away here but most will know that they will probably lose some. There are plenty of people who play sunday league football just for fun, there never going to make a living from playing in the prem but they pay there subs every week just to play the game

    I play for both.

Like any sport, the vast majority of people have to pay to play the game and there is a small % who make profit from the game. If you lose its nothing to be ashamed about its just like spending money on any other form of entertainment. However, the great thing about poker at least you have a chance of making money where as if you pay £30 to watch a football match thats it its gone.

Do not estimate how important losing casual players are for the game, without them there is no poker site.

As for poker as a job, only job I would prefer is playing football for a living.

    I also play for both.

But if i was losing would i still enjoy it?  Probably not! I think the enjoyment for me comes from the money made. If i began losing i would reassess my game,or drop down limits until i began winning again.

It is probably my competitive nature, but i wouldnt enjoy donating my money. I have many friends that play for fun and lose what they can afford and if they get a return once in a while they are happy. Its each to their own, a game that can be played by all for many different reasons.

thanks for all the great posts guys!

I asked the question because i hear people always saying its the best game in the world, its the most fun they have etc. and i was curious to see if people would still enjoy it if they were consistantly losing. It seems that most of you would not, which is fair enough. But i started out losing and kept on playing because i was still enjoying it(or maybe a little bit addicted ;)) and now that i win more often,i dont think i enjoy it any more than i used do,i just have more incentive to play.
