Turbo Tuesday Night Live with Sarah and Ross *****Tonight's Show Thread, REGISTER HERE FOR LAST LONG

edited February 2014 in Poker Chat
UKPC bad beats? Gee, I don't think I have any of those.

I shoved twelve big blinds in the Main Event with pocket 7s, but it's perfectly standard to be called by someone holding 3 4; and then it's absolutely fine that the flop came down with nothing for either of us, keeping me miles ahead. It is then, of course, completely correct and expected that the turn was a 4 and the river was another 4, because everyone knows that live poker is rigged!*

*not really, but I'm still sore.

So - you tell me Sarah: lucky or not? ;)

You should have been there Sarah - you could have bought me drinks to drown my sorrows.

So how are we all doing today?  If you were at the UKPC I'm looking directly at you...  Recovered yet?  How was it for you?  Any tales to tell? Bad beats? tikay's coffee count?  All welcome...

We're back to the live shows this week then and tonight we're asking 'Do you feel lucky, punk?' (I'll see if Ross can do a decent Dirty Harry later)  And before you get all James Hartigan on me I know that's not the line, the line is 'Do I feel lucky punk' but it's been misquoted over the years and for the purposes of discussion I'm asking you... Do you consider yourself to be a lucky person or an unlucky person?  What's your knee jerk reaction to that question?

When it comes to flips, does your heart sink?  Do you think it's 50/50 so I'm bound to lose this! or are you more of a glass half full kinda player?  We know poker is ALL skill of course but when you need just that little bit of help does Lady Luck shine on you? Or do you dismiss this very discussion as nonsense because there's no such thing?

It's an interesting one to me and one on which many experiments have been conducted, Derren Brown devoted an entire show to people who consider themselves 'lucky' and 'unlucky' with some interesting results.  The main finding really being that people make their own luck.

Anyway I've waffled enough for now, I'll dig out a couple of free entries for those of you who indulge me with your thoughts on this show thread so thanks in advance and best of luck on the tables *if there is such a thing* ;-)

    Sarah xx

Am I unlucky? was I unlucky in the UKPC?
Well 4 times I was in an all in situation with cards up on the table. First time it went in on the turn, and a rivered flush beat me, I was damaged but I was still in. The second time I pushed with AK with about 13 big blinds, I was called by the Big Blind they also had AK we spit the anti's and small blind. The 3rd time I pushed with about 14 Big blinds with AQs I was called by the short stack with 44, the 44 held up. Now down to about 4 BB's I pushed with QJ and was called by 87s, they hit their flush and I was out. Still I got to day 2 and 303 out of 621 is not a bad effort, and above all I enjoyed it.
Do I believe I was unlucky? No not really, luck is just a statiscal blip, somedays you are the hammer other days you are the nail, it's just that we tend to only remember the bad beats against us, more than the bad beats for us.
    Have a great show.

Rumor has it that Liv Boeree was going to play the UKPC until she found out Slipwater was going and then decided to play the £5 rebuy at her local casino instead :)

In for the last longer if there is one :)

poker is 90% skill and 10% luck [in an upswing]

poker is 10% skill and 90% luck [in a downswing]

    meh.

i have a mate who is walking, real life variance. he is the only person i know who has actually slipped on a banana skin that was lying in the street. to balance that he once dropped a full pint in a bar, and had it land bolt upright with nary a drop spilled.

aces cracking under the strain of off-suit junk are merely banana skins in the street. the next night your T8o 4 bet bluff will run into kings and your pint will land upright, my son.

    never fear.

Ok if I am not allowed to name the shirt, I will just have to describe it.
    So the shirt was:-

    Stunning
    Heroic
    Impressive
    Thunderous &
    Expansive

Actually not that bad a description, but that is actually what it said on the shirt, assuming you can work it out.

I think poker is 51% skill and 49% luck.
It is maths based, and depends a lot on the run of cards dealt to you.
Good players know this and this is where there skill comes in!
But before the flop I am not afraid to put my 23 off suit against a pair of Aces .(90 % of players will fold)

Because it is a flip !

You win some, you lose some
You can tell from my comments, that I am in the game for pure enjoyment.
As long as I stick to what I can afford, it is pure enjoyment, take the rough with the smooth.
But when I win a satellite and play against the more serious players, I am out of my depth, afraid of every move I make, so do not play my normal game, where every move I make is got positive expectations(feel lucky!)

Hi all hope you had a good week at DTD and have a good show tonight,

I would say i am unlucky as i always seem to lose the races and when i am ahead in hands i always seem to be beaten by the dreaded RIVER almost every time lol.

I'm in for the last longer please.

Well they say that lucky in cards means unlucky in love, and as most of Billy Bragg's back catalogue is about my love life I am amazed I am not Poker World Champion by now! Seriously, I think it was Devilfish who coined the phrase, "If I didn't have bad luck I'd have no luck at all" and he's right, truthfully, if i put my hand in a barrel of.......well you know the rest.

As for bad beat stories I love the ones that start, "Well, I limped with Aces Under the Gun...." They always make me laugh cus i always raise, raise i tell you, and 36 suited owned by "Mr Well it's my lucky hand" calls and......well you know the rest.

But maybe, finally, it's bad luck that's misunderstood. Because, if every tournament you entered, you exited purely because of your own bad play, how many times would you come back? It's only because of the times you get unlucky that brings you back, because if that time, you handn't got unlucky, you would have won it, wouldn't you?

    Hi Sarah
Good luck with the show and good luck with getting Ross to do a Dirty Harry Impression........It will probably sound more like Popeye trying to woo Olive tbh :)

I would'nt consider myself to be a lucky player - If i'm miles ahead pre-flop I always expect the worst and 9 times out of 10 that's the only thing I can remember happening :) but i'm sure i've had my fair share of luck from time to time (we just don't remember them)

Let's hope I get lucky in the Turbo Open Tonight.

    Last Longer please......please.........please.......
