Buying a new desktop for poker - advice plz?

edited February 2011 in Poker Chat

As most know, I don't know anything about technology.

I was gonna get a new lappy, but when I saw desktops were the same price, I thought why not.

Found the one below, which is 20 inch monitor instead of 15 for a lappy, so it shud allow me to 6 table?

What do people think? is it any good? - Are there better out there? Appreciate any advice, cheerz.

(mods don't move till tonight plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz it's kinda about poke her.)

JJ i urge you not to buy a already built pc. Do you know anyone who can build a pc. Youll get one twice as good for half the price - well plus a small fee to the guy who puts it together for you.

Much of a better investment, talking of that i need to upgrade my processor, maybe ill be able to run 5 tables if i do. :D

also, whilst we are on this subject, wot size monitor / resolution is req to comfortably be able to fit 6 tables, and then same question again wiv 9 tables

JJ, thats the same pc i bought back in March, although the spec on mine is slightly better.  Mine has quad core processor and 4gb ram.  It also has blu ray player, not sure if that one has or even if it would be of use to you.
Mine cost £600 from pc world with no monitor.  But they are usually more expensive from there.  I only got it because they did 12 months interest free credit, and I only got it so I could play more tables so considered it an investment.
I would deffo go for a desktop over a laptop.  Also, if I were you I would invest in another monitor, once you have dual monitors you will wonder how you ever coped with one........ oh, and get a mouse.

Its weird coz the tables you can fit on will jump from 6 to 12.  If you can fit 9 tables on, you can fit 12.

I have a 24" monitor which can take 12 tables with very slight overlap using the smaller download tables.  But with the autofocus, this is not a problem.  You can pick up these size monitors pretty cheap these days

you should spend a bit more, get a better monitor, the resolution on that one is cr*p. I suppose its ok if you minview.

Something like this with windows is only 330...

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-239-OK

and then you could get a decent sized monitor for 170...

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-033-BQ&groupid=17&catid=510&subcat=

you would still need to buy a mouse and keyboard but they dont cost much

Iv got an Inspiron 580 with 8GB memory and 1TG of disc space (Which is more than you can fill). Monitor is 23" widescreen.

It runs really well, no lag at all, I can do 9 tables on miniview.

The spec could easily handle 6 tables on web or d/c, not sure about the monitor.  Its only 20".  Someone with a 20" monitor would have to post.
If your gonna pay cash upfront, I would go somewhere else than pc world tbh, you will get something cheaper.
I would buy them seperate, and I would steer clear of a 20" screen.  What happens when/if you want to add more tables and uve already filled ur screen.  Also, I would get the 2 screens straight away so you can get the same brand/model etc.  It might look a bit rubbish with different model monitors.
The good thing about that comp is its space saving.  The one I got is half the size of my dell and 4 x more powerfull.  Some of those High end gaming pc`s are the size of my car.
If you are getting a space saving pc, you may as well go for really top spec, as they will be more expensive and difficult to upgrade later on as all the components are not the standard sizes, so you may as well make it as future proof as possible.

I 6 table comfortably from my 17inch laptop on main view so I reckon 20 inches is fine if you dont mind a bit of overlap, with autofocus this shouldn't be a problem imo.

Pretty basic (naff)  question, but other than the mouse and keyboard, are the wires etc included?

    yes.

Also people saying the size of the moniitor should be alright, its not the size that matters but the resolution, and the resolution is not very good.  I mean its workable but if youre gonna try and multitable youre gonna eventually want to add more tables and having a better resolution monitor makes so much difference iyam.

    cant wait for the

'bought a computer help me set it up thread...'

    and

'how do I multi table thread'

Just get a screen that runs 1920x1220 and you can 15 table one monitor in mini view with a bit of overlap. :-)

get aqn idea of what spec you would actually need then keep an eye on somewhere like hot deals uk

This was posted on the the other day for a monitor which i feel is a good deal.

    DISPLAY

    Panel Size:
    24" (60.96 cm)
    Aspect Ratio
    Widescreen (16:9)
    Panel Type:
    TN (Twisted Nematic), Non-glare
    Maximum Resolution:
    Full HD 1920 x 1080 @60 HZ
    Contrast Ratio:
    7,000,000:1 (estimated)
    Brightness:
    250 cd/m2 (typical)
    Response Time:
    5ms typical
    Viewing Angle
    (160 vertical / 170 horizontal)
    Colour Support:
    81% (CIE1976) / 68% (CIE1931)
    Pixel Pitch:
    0.277mm

    Full HD Monitor with LED

If you claim quidco, this is going to be just £157.68.. which I believe is the best price at the moment for a 24” screen

televisions no matter how big are rubbish for use with computers. My 37" wide screen samsung is worse than a 17" laptop screen for table space and resolution.

you need a monitor as opposed to a tv.

I bought one of these because they were on discount so I think less than 200...

Ordered it at 4pm, it arrived at 8.05am the next day, by 11am I had ordered a second cos they is guuut yo.

That PC is pretty bad, don't buy it.  Basic dual core processor, 3Gb of Memory, 500GB hard drive and a shocking monitor... it doesn't have much going for it.

Taking a quick look if you don't mind waiting for delivery them THIS is a pretty nice machine for £499.

If you end up buying a PC that comes without monitor then THIS is a nice monitor for £168.  With a 1920 x 1080 monitor you can arrange windows like I posted HERE.

If you just want to walk into PC World then I'd say look for this:

    Triple or Quad Core
    4Gb of memory
1TB hard drive although 500GB is fine.
Monitor should be 22" or bigger and MUST be 1920 x 1080

Definitely get a desktop over a laptop (unless you really need to be able to move about with you're computer), you'll get much better value. Equally, self build is cheaper and you can spec it up without too much investment. If you're budget extends to be able to get a second monitor, then I'd say get one, I use dual monitors and very little would tempt me back to a single display. Tis very functional, and although I don't multi-table, I would see that being a great advantage.

My only concern with that machine would be the PSU, 300w is pretty low IMO. Depends though I guess on what you're gonna be running (I doubt you'll be overclocking it).

I've self built all my PC's, but if you're looking for reliable pre/custom built system, my brother swears by http://www.alienware.co.uk/. I know he got a pretty well spec'd system from them a few years ago, and it's still pretty good even by current standards.

True, but it's just got a single hard drive, no separate graphics card and I can't see DOHHHHHHH going down the expansion route or overclocking it any time soon!  So as a poker workstation it would be fine.
