Exactly^^^ was just saying to some1 earlier who has been on a bad run...People tend to remember the bad beats, yet forget when they dish one out themselves. Selective memory certainly comes into play.

When I first came here, I spent many month's not looking at the forum, just purely playing poker. After a tough run, I put the tables down and had a look over here........

One of the first posts that took my eye is below and it stayed in my mind all this time, and in all fairness,it gave me a new perspective on things.

It took a lot of finding but I hope it can be useful.

'Being on a downswing at the moment, I was ready to pull the plug on sky poker and move elsewhere, however,
after 5 days thought and reflection, I have shaken off the deep feelings of resentment I had and have come to the following conclusions and advice for anyone else feeling the same.

Tell yourself that you actually like bad beats!!  Sounds silly, yes, but ultimately it means you pushed your chips over the line whilst you were a massive favourite. For every 15 times i get runner runner full house beating my straight, it must mean 85 times i got his chips. Remember you do not know how many times people muck on the river because they have missed their 3 outers.

Take a week or two away from the tables. Like most of us, bad beats put us on tilt. This is more dangerous than any other style of play. Not only are you playing against 5 others but also now playing against
yourself. Dont chase losses, you'll only be throwing good money away. Wait until you are more focussed.

Tell yourself you have given bad beats as well as receiving them. Can anyone genuinly say they have never pushed with hands like jacks or queens to be found running into aces and outdrawing them? Not many i would wager. Also has anyone let in the big blind too cheaply with their monster hand only to be outdrawn?  Delicate balance this risk/reward thing.

Let bankroll management be your God, never play with more than 5% at any one time and if necessary drop down a level or reduce your games to 2.5% of your bankroll. Scared money never wins. If you are lucky enough to be in profit over your playing career, withdraw your original investment and only leave your profit in your account. Theres no better feeling than freerolling with other peoples money. And if you are really lucky (or good enough) to stay in profit after each month or so make a small withdrawl to treat yourself. Doesnt need to be big, just something to keep or look back on so you can see a physical return for your time and (sometimes) anguish.

Most of all, never play in the wrong frame of mind, when ill (i know from experience, after being off work ill I thought it would be the best time to get a few extra hours in, trust me, setting fire to five pound notes would be more pleasurable and the money probably would last longer!)  when tired or worst of all drunk. Being on the wrong end of alchohol has cost me many cashes over the years.'

I have tried to remember this and feel a lot of the post can be applied anywhere, be it cash or tournament play

I hope this helps anyone who feels the same.

    Hi Hale

That post certainly sends out the right message to all of us who at one time or another have had bad beats.
We have all, I suspect many times, handed out bad beats ourselves and were grateful that the poker gods had been kind to us in that instance. The poker gods have to be in your favour in any tournament if you want to win.
I will always go away from my PC or have a look through the forum any time I have had a bad beat to calm down before I feel relaxed enough to go back and play again.
I do hope that Elsadog will re-consider the decision to leave and just take some time out and come back refreshed ready to hand out a few bad beats of his own.
You would be missed in the forum if you left.

In Response to How many times can the 2 outer hit:
Once again tonight I'm blown out by the miracle 2 outer. On the river as usual. Enough is quite enough. I've enjoyed myself on here but the crazy calls and the ''oh look they hit the 2 outer again'' is just too much. So I'm bowing out and I'll call in from time to time but won't be playing here for at least...........ooohh let's see now...........a couple of years. Take care everyone. Elsa

Hi elsa , i can understand your frustration . Im fresh out of a 10 week downswing and that was extremly difficult to handle. In the past i have had long periods of losing but that was mainly because i was really pants at the game. This was my first proper downswing and boy its so tough , when day after day, you get the horror outdraws, cant win your races , the bad calls , the bad beats, etc, etc.etc. . Day after day of losing and watching your bankroll deminish is demoralising and i was borderline area 51 material on several occasions . However there were positives in that time too . I was still running deep in tournys .I was mainly getting my chips in ahead.  More importantly i spotted weaknesses in my game and started thinking about them. I asked for advice and started putting that into practice.Im still not very good at the game but im a better player for having got through the downswing. One enormous big thankyou goes to ozzie ,irishrover , lucky and others that gave me advice , help and encouragement . C,mon elsa , im sure you have had your downswings before .Take a break , come back refreshed . We ,also really need your input here. One piece of advice i would like to give to others .If a downswing starts affecting your decicions , take a day or two break and clear your head . Right ,im off to win some more money . gl , all.

Definite shame....respected member of Sky Poker community lost..although it seems every day a different person is leaving due to bad beats or perceived bad luck. I often encounter it in games, with comments like "typical sky poker" when they get rivered..what people dont understand is that bad beats can occur in any environment, from a home game with ur mates, to the world's best casinos.

You're right, and I've seen on every site I've played on, the exact same line... It's always "typical pkr...", "ty[ical stars.." etc etc Bad beats are going to happen everywhere, its all part of the game.  Does make me laugh in our home game when one of my friends alowas sulks and goes home early if he loses when he was ahead though :)
