My challenge starts now. Current balance £51.00.
Initial plans;
While my balance is low I will be playing in single table sit & go tournaments and freerolls only; a combination of DYMs, HU and standard STTs. I've been practising these for a few days and doing well. At this stage I will only buy-in to games for no more than 1/40th of my bankroll. This allows £1 games for now, but if my balance drops below £40 I will drop to 50p games. While my roll is dangerously low I will mainly play only one table at a time to allow full concentration, also I will be using the Sharkscope tournament selector to avoid tough tables.

My challenge began with a selection of micro-stakes STTs this afternoon. I'd been doing very well in practise over the last few days, but in typical 'sods law' fashion things didn't go so well once the challenge actually started. I ran pretty badly, and if I'm honest I made a few crucial mistakes too. Due to my work shifts I don't usually play in the evening, but this challenge made the Facebook Freeroll unmissable. It turned out to be my best result of the day when I held on for 45th/1000 for £1.00. My bust-out hand was a standard cooler, with stacks very short in this hyper-turbo event I jammed AJ from the cut-off into AK in the blinds and didn't get any help. A slightly disappointing first day, but by no means a crisis yet, I know I'm a big favourite in these games. Hopefully things will go a little better on day 2.GaryQQQ045£1

Still running pretty badly and my frustrating start continues. It was one of those days where I just couldn’t fade flush draws. Several HU matches and crucial pots in other games were lost to those dreaded flush draws which seemed to get there every time. I'm sure you all know how it feels, we all get days like that. Going nowhere fast!
Variance is still not my friend. I’m not going to turn this into a bad beat bore, but I bubbled several STTs by getting outdrawn after getting my chips in well ahead. In frustration I made a rare visit to a cash table mid-way through the session, I managed to lose 75% of my buy-in in the very first hand with flush under flush after being ahead on all streets until the river. I stayed there for a while and managed to win most of it back. My best results today were in HU SnG matches. I’m heartened to see my balance heading very slightly north despite the unfriendly deck.

Still treading water!
I finished slightly up today after the tournaments listed below and a few cash hands. It might only be 16p, but at least I’ve gone slightly ahead of my starting balance! Also I’m earning poker points at a good enough rate for a Cash for Points bonus at the end of the month. I’m thinking of ditching the DYMS because it’s very tough to beat the rake at micro stakes and instead concentrate on scary HU and STT games which are raked at only 5% and 10%.

A little bit better!
Today went well apart from a series of hyper HU matches against one particular opponent. He appeared to be in ‘God mode’; flopping sets, straights and flushes for fun. Each time I threw in my chips with a strong hand he’d flip over the nuts. Before I threw in the towel he beat me 6 consecutive times, I hardly won a pot. Otherwise results were good, my decision to move away from DYMs bearing fruit.
I always expected that the early stages of this challenge would be tough, and so it’s proving to be. It feels uncomfortable knowing I don’t have the cushion of a big balance in my account. I’m itching to jump into some Bounty Hunter tournaments, but I’m also determined to stick to my BRM rules, I’ll wait until I have 40 buy-ins behind me before I join the fray. Poker points earned so far in January; 414. I’m on schedule to earn around 700 points by month end and bring in a very welcome bonus of £5.00+ in 3 weeks. £5.00 is a big deal when it’s 10% of your entire bankroll!

The good news; this was my fourth winning day in a row. The bad news; it was a tiny win again. I’m ditching DYMs for the moment, they were my speciality when I started on Sky, but I feel that nowadays my skill set is better suited to games you play to win. My results since Monday (see below) make this an easy decision, I know sample size is small, but so far I’m running at -24% ROI in DYMs, +2% in hyper HU matches and +28% in scary STTs. The scary STTs look like my best option to build my roll, the fields are fairly weak and I consider my bubble play and end game to be very strong. Another factor is the rake, micro STTs are raked at 10%, micro DYMS are raked at 15% to 20%, that's almost unbeatable in my opinion, the players in these are more skilled than when I used to play them a couple of years ago.

Yay! My best day so far, made an £8 profit to boost my bankroll by 14%. Focussing on scary STTs was a success; I’m plannng to keep these as my main game for the time being. I was tempted to jump into bigger buy-in games I saw filling with weak players, but I refuse to break my 40 buy-ins rule, I won’t be found in £2+ games until my balance creeps above £80.

My results in the scary STTs weren’t as good as they have been over previous day, but I still returned a profit after winning 5/5 hyper HU matches. After making small losses in the first 2 days I’m very pleased to have bounced back with a streak of 7 profitable days. £19.09 profit so far may seem like no big deal, but I’m very happy with progress. Hopefully by the end of next week I’ll be rolled for £2.30 Bounty Hunter tournaments. I find these very lucrative; in the past I’ve played 570 of these at an average ROI of +47%, that’s £1.10 average profit per tournament.

Not much progress today. Didn’t run too well in some key spots and made a couple of bad calls. Knew it wouldn't be my day when I lost the first HU match after getting it in as 80/20 favourite and losing both times in consecutive hands. Was pleasantly surprised to see it hadn't been a losing day when I logged off. My bankroll roll has grown by 39% in the first 10 days, I can only be happy with that. If I could do the same every 10 days (very unlikely!) this challenge would take about 90 days to complete.

More time spent in the micro STTs (and a 45p freeroll bink lol) resulted in a very small win and my 9th consecutive profitable day. It could have been much better but several times my dominating cards couldn’t hold when all-in for a tournament deciding stack. The best news of the day is that the 24 poker points earned took me past the 500 point threshold to 521 points. It was a funny day today. I ran terribly all afternoon in STTs. I feel I played well, but took harsh beats to sna_tch defeat from the jaws of victory several times. I didn’t really mind too much, I know a downswing is inevitable sooner or later.
Resigned to making a loss for the day I registered for a £1.10 deepie to finish my session, this being my first proper MTT since this challenge started. While I waited for the deepie to begin I sat at a hyper HU table and a scary STT. In the scary I got 2nd after being 2-outered on the river to deny me the win. In HU match I accidentally 3-bet jammed my 66 into 99 pre-flop for all the chips. It was OK though; I made a straight on the river to suck-out and win. Then the deepie started and I went on a fairly deep run. On the bubble I ran into a spot of bother, I 5-bet jammed my AcKc from the SB into an aggro player on the button. Unfortunately he really did have it this time and flipped over his KK. But all’s well that ends well. I binked my ace on the river and doubled-up. From there I went on the get 7th/117 and unexpectedly record another profitable day.

Didn’t play much but managed to record my 12th consecutive winning day. A min-cash in the Fantasy Football Freeroll was a fun way to end to my session. I’m almost rolled for £2.30 Bounty Hunters now, can’t wait to get stuck in. My balance has grown by 67.5% in the first 2 weeks, well chuffed.

No, I think the way I play is unaffected. I'm taking a 'play to win win' mentality in everything I enter, no going nitty to scrape min cashes or anything like that. If anything this challenge is making me focus much more and having a positive effect on my results. I care about every single result at the moment. If I play a £1 HU match tomorrow I'm going to play to the very best of my ability. A couple of weeks ago I wouldn't really care about the pound and would chuck my chips in without giving it too much thought.
I tried micro DYMs at the start of this challenge but I've more or less abandoned them now. When I first joined Sky I had a tight style of play that let me do quite well in DYMs, but they just don't suit my game anymore. I think the standard is much better these days, you can't double most times by folding every hand while the other knock each other out like you could a couple of years ago, beating the high rake seems almost impossible.

After a few lunchtime STTs I was pleased to see my balance pass the £86.00 threshold which allows me to enter a £2.30 Bounty Hunter tournament without breaking my 40 buy-in rule. I excitedly registered in the 3-05pm tourney. There was only a small field; 33 runners with top 5 to be paid. I ended up taking second place for a nice profit despite running terribly at the final table. Three-handed my QJ couldn’t hold against QT aipf to take a bounty and get heads-up with a big lead. Then my bust out hand was AK<AJ aipf for 70% of the chips in play, I flopped the nut-flush draw but the villain hit one of the two off-suit jacks on the turn to win the tournament. Despite my brief frustration at the run-bad I was thrilled to record a nice profit on the day and move close to a 3-figure balance.
