Variance is still giving me a hiding in the hyper HU STTs. Match deciding hands today included AJ<A2, A8<A2, AJ<J9 and 66<A2, each of those being all-in preflop. I threw in the towel after my opponent won multiple all-ins to come back and win from a 20-980 chip deficit in the final game, which included an A4>QQ on the way with the A hitting on the river. A promising run in a Bounty Hunter tournament fizzled out with a disappointing 5th place finish. After 3 consecutive losing days I suppose I should take heart that I actually managed to break even today. Hopefully it’s a sign the current downswing is about to turn. Feb poker points 67.

I know what you mean about them Hyper HU SNG's, I had a good go myself but just found them super swingy and so easy to lose loads of games consectutively that any winnings can go in a blink of an eye.

Still, good luck matey, it'll defo turn round soon enough.

    Day 27 – February 4th 2012

    Closing balance £130.46

Happy to see my balance heading the right way again and restored a little confidence. Finished slightly up in heads-up matches and went on 2 deep Bounty Hunter runs. In the first BH I was flying in 3rd of 17 with 6 head prizes when a huge pot crippled my stack. I opened 2.2x from the cut-off with KQ and got flatted by the button. The flop came down KQJ. I c-bet, he raised, I jammed. With hindsight maybe I could have put him on his AT (or a set of jacks) and got away from my hand, but it’s tough to fold top 2 when effective stacks are only 40BB. A few hands later I shoved my last 9BB from the SB with AJ and lost a race against the BB’s 99 to bust in 17th. In the second Bounty Hunter I nursed a small stack for the last 2 of the 3 hours with very few playable hands. It was nice to make the final table of a 138 runner tournament, but I frustratingly busted in 4th, my exit hand being A9<99 aipf, with only 7BB behind the hand played itself. Feb poker points 90.

    Day 28 – February 5th 2012

    Closing balance £147.26

A so-so sort of day that ended well. I seem to have lost my way a bit with the HU matches at the moment, just about breaking even today. My only Bounty Hunter MTT ended in cruel fashion when my TT couldn't hold vs a JK who bluff shoved over my c-bet on a 6 high flop, he hit a J on the river to bust me when a hold would have been worth a top 5 stack. The highlight of the day was turning 50 poker points into £20 in the Fantasy Football Freeroll. I managed a fun run to get 4th of the 297 in this very fast structured event and finish the day on my highest balance to date. I’m keeping a close eye on my poker points, it’s crucial I make it to 500 and qualify for the  £5 PTN bonus being awarded in February. I’m ahead of schedule at the moment, but there are several days ahead on which I’ll be unable to play. Feb poker points 110.

    Day 29 – February 6th 2012

    Closing balance £140.34

A frustrating day. There was a welcome return to form in HU STTs with 10 wins from 14 games, but I just couldn’t get anything going in the MTTs. Most of my tournament time was spent being card dead, coolered, outflopped or losing flips. For the first time today I was able to enter events with a £3.30 buy-in without breaking my BRM rules, not that that helped. Three times I played for over two hours only to bust on the bubble. I’m off work this week, so I’ll be making some rare appearances in evening tournaments. The mini Bounty Hunter started well with a double-up and a head prize in the very first hand, but it only went downhill from there. In the end I was the bubble boy finishing in 51st place with 50 paid. Feb poker points 140.

    Day 30 – February 7th

    balance £125.23

Another day of MTT frustration. The best I could manage all day was a small profit in a £2 timed tourney. Apart from that absolutely nothing would go my way. Many times my chips went in as a huge favourite but holding seemed impossible.

You see tons of awful play at the micro stakes. For example, in a £2.30 Bounty Hunter in the second hand of the tournament I was dealt AcQc on the BB. The UTG player open raised to 14BB, a player in MP flatted, and then the SB shoved all-in. After so much crazy action I had no option but to fold. The original raiser called with AJo, the flat caller folded, the SB flipped over 97o. Although I had the best hand preflop the J on the flop would have busted me. Another time I saw a player 4-bet shove his 50BB stack all-in preflop with 43s, he flopped 2 pairs, took a head prize and doubled his stack. Even when you see all this mad play going there’s not a lot you can do about it you when you don’t pick up hands and you miss flops all day.

Today saw a big dent in my balance due to the awful MTT results, a small profit in HU matches and my January £5.66 C4P bonus eased the pain somewhat and maintaining my silver star on Sharkscope gives me heart. I’m off to London in the morning, so there’ll be no poker for the next 48 hours. My confidence is low and a short break might do me good. I managed to earn 55 poker points today and qualify for the iPad draw, fingers crossed. Feb poker points 196.

    Day 32 – February 9th 2012

    Closing balance £107.53

After 48 hours away from the tables any hope that my fortunes may improve was quickly dashed. In the first tournament my chips went in with 45 vs. KQ on a 45Q flop but I was unable to hold. My second and third tournaments ended in similar fashion. In the fourth I 4-bet shoved all my chips in pre-flop with QQ in the very first hand. For days I’ve been watching players getting it with all sorts of medioce holdings in this situation. My opponent turned up with AA this time of course, and the first time I get it in behind happens to also be the first time the best hand actually holds. The heads-up matches went horrendously too.

While this mini downswing  is very frustrating I know it’s standard for a tournament player. It also underlines why my 40 buy-in rule is so important, I could quickly go bust now without sensible BRM . I can only control how I play my cards, I can’t control the deck.  Long term results prove that I’m a favourite in these games. It’s crucial I avoid tilt and continue to play to the best of my ability. If I can the results will follow.

Thanks for the suggestion. I stick to tournaments poker because that's what I enjoy. I'm a recreational player whose main reason for playing poker is to have fun. To me a cash game is about exciting as watching paint dry, I'd rather stick to tournaments even if they're less profitable.

Very relieved to finally pull out of the recent steep nosedive. My first tourney of the day ended with a run to the final table. Unfortunately my flopped 2 pair couldn’t survive against a turned gutshot and I busted out in cruel fashion for 6th place. However, it was my best result for days and I happily took it. Two deepish runs in the evening didn’t come to anything but were encouraging none the less. A slight profit in STTs helped me finish slightly up on the day and book a profit for the first time since Sunday.

Another day of frustration. Well, frustration until a freeroll came to the rescue. All day it seemed my draws could never hit and my opponents draws would always get there on the river. Statistically my all-in pairs will beat a single over card around 70% of the time in the long run. Lately I’ve been going through one of those phases where if feels more like 7%. For these reasons I’m getting absolutely nowhere at the moment in games that I’ve been beating consistently over the last couple of years. When I’d just about had enough and was ready to give up for the day Sky Poker’s 5th birthday Freeroll came to the rescue. My 30th place finish was worth £12.50 and almost cancelled out my losses in the other games. Feb poker points 270.

Went out all day, only had time for one quick HU game when I got in. An early night for me, I'm back to work and the usual 1-30am alarm calls tomorrow after a week off work.

Didn’t play much today, but I played enough to be remind myself how badly I’m running.

My first (and only) hand in my third tournament sums up my current form pretty well. With TT on the BB I flatted a min raise from UTG, the other 4 players at the table had folded. The flop came down T83r, I checked my top set and he checked back. I led out half pot on the 5 turn and the villain re-raised, I raised again hoping to get all the chips in, but he just called. The river was an A. With 1,060 in the pot I bet 360 to induce and was loving life when the villain snap shoved all-in. He flipped over AA of course, the only hand that could beat me (apart from the highly unlikely 24) and had just binked his 2 outer on the river. 970 of those 1,060 chips had gone in the pot while I was miles ahead.

In heads-up matches I’m finding it almost impossible to hold. Again and again while holding the bigger stack I’m getting my opponents all-in and behind. Again and again they’re hitting and coming back to win. Also I cannot win any flip.

I don’t want this diary to turn into one long whinge but there’s not much else to say at the moment. Despite my poor run I’m still aware that skill is permanent and luck is temporary. The deck can’t continue to hammer me forever. I’ll keep plugging away and wait for a fair share of luck to come my way. Luck in poker is very streaky, hopefully a heater is just around the corner. Day 37 – February 14th 2012

    Closing balance £106.36

Today continued where yesterday left off as I managed to lose 2 HU matches after being all-in as 60/40 favourite in each for the win.

Then, completely out of the blue, at 12-27pm my luck suddenly changed for the better. 42 minutes into my first Bounty Hunter of the day I cold 3-bet jammed AK and went to the races against 2 callers with QQ and Q8s, I shocked myself by binking a K on the flop to take a head prize and almost treble-up. I can’t even remember the last MTT flip that went my way before that. A few minutes later I busted another big stack with my flopped top set improving to a full house on the river to bust his turned straight. By now I was clear chip leader and all of a sudden poker was great fun again. It wasn’t to last long though, normal service resumed at 12-57pm with AK<AQ hand below. My 30 minutes of run good were well and truly over, soon after that my AT lost to A8 all-in preflop and I crashed out well short of the money.

In my second Bounty Hunter I busted with AA < KQ, the flop came down JT9. A promising run in my third BH of the day lead to a welcome 4th place finish. Unfortunately the cards didn’t go my way when well placed at the sharp end. After losing half my stack with AQ<TT I jammed 66 and ran into 77. I flopped an open ender to give me hope but couldn’t improve. My prize of £4.95 + £0.98, barely more than double my buy-in, is incredibly my best win in my last 31 x £2.30 Bounty Hunters, a stark illustration of just how badly they’ve been going lately.

Despite failing to make a profit today I do feel my confidence has been boosted. For the first time in a while a few MTT flips went my way, there were less bad beats  and I actually got myself in a position where I had a realistic chance of a win a couple of times, something that’s been completely absent lately. I’m beginning to really believe better results could be just around the corner. Feb poker points 301.

Totally standard HU hand for me at the moment. Every games seems to go this way. Just can't win a 60/40 at the moment (66/33 here). 'If you can't beat 'em, join 'em', maybe I should start 3-bet shoving 24BB preflop with hands like 84o and see if it works for me, it's working for my opponents.

I cant quite see the stack sizes in those heads-up games but i'm assuming ur playing turbos.

if thats the case then stay away, they are way too swingy for your challenge. i would play the standard heads-up games, they take longer, but the £1-2 levels are very comfortable, and with the longer format, the better player tends to win more often than not.

The stack sizes were 1,210 and 790 with blinds at 15/30, so the villain chose to 3-bet shove his 8/4 offsuit with effective stacks at 26 big blinds. This was his 3rd 3-bet shove of the match from the big blind, so I knew his range was pretty wide, though I didn't expect it to be that wide.

    Day 38 – February 15th 2012

    Closing balance £116.92

Very happy to report a profit today after all the recent losses. Bounty Hunter tournaments remain my Achilles heel. Once again a couple of promising starts went pear-shaped in unfortunate circumstances. My Bounty Hunter downswing is now up to 34 tournaments, painful but probably not that exceptional in the high variance world of MTTs. The best result of the day was turning £2.40 into £11.00 in a satellite using the ‘buy-in/win another seat/de-register' method.

My confidence is rising somewhat and maybe I can sense my downswing ending. A few flips went my way and I sucked out once with 66>AA aipf to take a head prize. It feels like my 60/40s are managing to hold a bit more often too.

That doesn’t mean things have stopped going the other way. In my final tournament I cruelly dropped from a healthy 4th/19 to 15th/19 (10 to be paid) with TT<77. Then on the money bubble my AA couldn’t over KK to bust the short stack in a crazy hand (see below). Post bubble my A7 v A5 and AJ v AT aipfs both resulted in chops when the board double paired each time. In the end I was relieved to make the final table for a small profit after such a rollercoaster ride. Feb poker points 317.

    Day 39 – February 16th 2012

    Closing balance £128.00

I came back to the tables to try my luck in another 3 afternoon Bounty Hunter tournaments. The first two went awfully. My bust out hands were KK<A8 and AA<88 (see below), both aipf. The second of those being on the stone-cold bubble to bust out in 9th with 8 to be paid.

In the third tournament I lost 1/3 of my stack in early skirmishes. Then, to my surprise, I actually went on a heater. All of a sudden I was flopping well and my dominating hands were holding. At the hour break I was the clear chip leader with 27K chips and 3 head prizes, miles ahead of second place with 9K. The 4th head followed in level 8 when I won a flip with TT<AQ, the 5th came with JT>J3, the 6th with AA>Q9, the 7th with A9>A7, the 8th with J4>87s (a rare hold for me against a flopped combo draw). Doubling up an opponent’s 20bb stack with 99<AA was only a minor setback as I maintained my big lead. My 9th head came with a suck out, my J7 out drawing the JQ of unfortunate forum member poshcole after we got it in on a J high flop (see below). Just before that I’d lost a huge pot with KJ<Q9, the villain made a full house, I made a terrible river call to double him and drop myself down to 2nd when the bubble burst. When we broke to final table I was placed in 3rd.

When the shortest stack busted the 5 of us remaining at the 2 hour break were all roughly level with around 30bb each. My run came to an end with a 4th place finish. I check-shoved my JTs on a T high flop, the caller had KT and I was out. With the blinds increasing and my stack down to 20bb it was a standard cooler, I’d probably play it the same way again.

While anything other than a win is always a disappointment after making a final table I can take a lot of positives from this tournament. It was my biggest Bounty Hunter cash in my last 40 attempts, more importantly for the first time in about 3 weeks for a good hour I had that great feeling you sometimes get in poker when you’re playing well, running well and everything seems to be going your way.

Is my downswing over? Maybe. That’s 2 profitable days in a row, but I’m still around £19.00 below my peak balance. Feb poker points 327.

I think I can now consider my downswing to be over after getting second in one of my 2 tournaments today. The HU battle lasted a full hour. I was agonisingly close to the win three times when my opponent (who played very well) was all-in against my slightly stronger cards. If I could have won any of these; my 55 v JT aipf, my A5 v QJ aipf or my flopped flush draw and live cards vs over cards then victory would have been mine. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be, my opponent doubled each time and came back for the win. I’m happy though, 3 weeks of rotten luck seems to be over and my balance is heading the right way again.
