Tapping the tank and educating in the chat box

edited April 2012 in Poker Chat
Annoys me so much. If someone calls a 4-bet for their entire stack with KJ and gets lucky, don't start calling them a fish in the chat box, telling them that calling 40bb off with KJ is a bad play long term, etc.

Just saw exactly what I've described in the rebuy open from a regular on the site, who should know better than to

1) Educate the people who are going to be profitable to play against long term whilst sat at the table with them.
2) Abuse people in the chat box.
3) Have such bad manners considering everyone on here is over 18 and is supposed to be mature and know better.

Why the hell do people do this? Abusing and educating losing players at the table is stupidity at it's finest.

Rant over.

I seem to recall Neil Channing the poker legend saying exactly the same thing on the show last week. He even recalled a story of someone doing it in a cash game he was playing in. He said educating someone away from the tables like on the 865 show was fine but doing it at the table with a player was a silly thing to do as it is like taking money out of your pocket if they follow your advice.

Could this not have gone in your diary?

Yes you have morals bla bla bla you've brought it to the attention of the community zzzzz.

Sometimes people get tilted and say stuff, happens.

I was on the same table at the time and by saying do not tap the tank you are saying the guy/girl in question is a fish and a losing player but i have often seen this player do well on here and his/her results are not bad. The play at that time was bad but we all have bad moments.

I think most people has at sometime said something maybe they regret in the chatbox after taking a bad beat at an important situation ,(which this was).

Nothing i read was that bad , sarcastic maybe ,rude no.
I think maybe you insinuating that the player in question is a fish/losing player on this forum is just as bad as what was said.

Someone takes a bad beat near the bubble. Guess what...it happens in every Poker tournament ever. Get over it, people. It's a game... There's more important things to get upset about than Poker.

It may not have been the worst abuse ever at a table, but nonetheless, it's still unnecessary. What does tapping the tank and telling the villain they did something wrong achieve? Either the villain thinks "This community aren't very nice, I'm going to play on another site instead", or they remember that someone abused them for getting 40bb in with KJ and don't make the same bad play next time.

    Either way, it achieves nothing.

Also, I'm not saying that the player in question is a fish - Even if I was, then I haven't named the villain, so I don't see any issue. Yes, they did one thing which was a bit fishy, and in hindsight, they would probably admit that themselves.

My problem is that if the player who loses the hand perceives that player as being a fish, then why on earth would you tell them and abuse them about it?

Playing at naps in sheffield recently, the drunk table whale did something totally eccentric shall we say lost a load. The player who won the pot stood up called him every awful name he could think of,even though he won the pot. I had a go at the guy asking him why he did it and he said he didnt like playing against terrible players, he hated them. I complained to dealer but nothing happened as its a really badly run card room. To be fair all card rooms near me are run extremly badly.

Also, never educate anyone how to play poker, every time someone posts in the poker clinic, teaches someone how to play etc, its like burning money.

dont think its an issue calling someone a fish for playing bad if they call every street for not the right odds and dont respect your raises. I dont think it will make them think about there play to be honest and they will do it regardless if there that sort of player. What it can do sometimes is put them on tilt even more gaining you an advantage. after all everyone can say what they like in the chat box as long as its not abuse! i dont think starting a thread saying that a reg shouldnt is justified to be fair. Each have there own opinion on it and if you dont want to do it fair enough. I can see your point about not tapping the tank as you dont want a bad player to know your on to him which i agree wont help in the long run. Everyone is entitled to a rant now and then and perhaps that player has been going through a bad run of fish hitting constantly and he was just a bit fed up of it.

I do help people how to play poker, as I find it rewarding but if you help someone to learn the game they are a tougher opponent hence you dont make as much. Forums is one of the reasons why the game has got tougher over the years and its harder to make money.

Not trying to be argumentative but surly if players are more knowledgable you cant make as much?

you have to remember that forum players like to learn and as such improve but we are a small minority of the overal players so helping players on here isnt really going to affect you as a whole. You may pick up certain things from players that post if you meet them at the table, but generally i dont play against people on the forum that often and if i do it a lot more fun. The vast majority dont post on here and as such dont learn maybe as much as we do so you are at an advantage against the ones who dont. Infact the only time i get too play people on the forum is mainly on a monday night in the dtd.

    Hmmmmm....

Wasn't me was it Pingu?  Think I may have reacted to a beat where the guy made trip J's when I had him dominated not long before the bubble, but don't think I said anything out of turn.

What you rather have someone doing their brains and then getting fed up of doing it every week and having to get the card out and giving up poker

Or someone becoming somewhat competent but still being a value in the game but rather than having to get the card out every week they have some success/sustainability...and maybe when you are not playing/away from the tables they will then beat weaker opponents which them rolls them to then lose to you at a later date.

As I said...shortsighter...think long term jus like the recent rake changes discussion but ofc some people only think about what they can earn week by week or month by month rather than thinking oh we want Sky Poker to become an even bigger success and more importantly sustainable and having an influx of new money every day and still be here in 5/10 years

Exactly, do you think people with money to start off with are happy about consistently losing to a reg. Most people who are rich (and im talking about those who play at higher stakes) have a competitive streak about them, its how they made their money in the first place.

Poker should not be seen as a free lunch, like anything in life you have to work at it. When the competition steps their game up you have to do the same.

A good example of this is when i win the Open or another mtt bink and go and spew on 50nl at 2am having drunk 20 cans of cider...

People like Ryan and the rest of "team awesome" benefit innit

Seriously tho, I see why Beane calls AJS selfish alot now. Obviously, playing poker professionally means you have to make as much money as possible, i see that, but there is no need to be completely heartless.

This is me in a nutsuhell, very rarely deposit but just not got the game to become half decent,i tic along, have winning streaks have losing streaks, but i know im not that good,
As for tapping the tank,i used to call people fish alot but then i realised i was being hypocritical :)also the forum helped me chill abit because i didnt no about variance and i,d blame others bad play now it hardly bothers me.
AJS is better off not posting at all if this is how he feels about others helping each other, stick to grinding and making easy money.

A poker forum teaches people not to spend money on poker and take it as a serious endeavour not a game of fun. If people stop spending money on poker and take it seriously there is no site.

When I here people talking about poker its like they are a living in a fantasy land where everyone wins. Listen to channel 865 they give the impression that everones a winner.

The reality of it is for you to BREAK EVEN there is a lot of people losing a lot of money.

If everyone followed the forums advice in just bankroll management the site would be dead within weeks.

People who make money out of poker be it working for sky or pros. Do so from people spending a lot of money.

Whenever I write something on here I put it how it is. People might not like hearing that this site, the employees wages, the pros winnings. All come from a lot of people spending a lot of money. In a minority of cases spending money they cant afford. This is the reality.

    Bandwagon ;)

He might be, but why shouldn't he be? He's trying to earn a living, why should he care about the long term health of the site or poker in general?

If everyone did as he's suggesting (never gonna happen) and all strategy forums died completely, games would be easier, and he'd make more money.

The only reason he might wanna give a stuff* about the long term health of online poker is if he plans to raise his ferrets as poker players ;)

oh and why would that be AJS.  should we go on and say 'oh actually 80pc of you are gonna do your brains, 10pc of you will breakeven and the rest of you will live off the profits/rakebacl'

If everyone followed the forums advice in just bankroll management the site would be dead within weeks.

Yes but some players have good BRM/budget managment can GOOD for the games.  You need a mix of pros/grinders/casual winning players/casual breakeven players/casual losing players and then ofc the degens who just do the lot at every opportunity.

For instance the games wouldn't ever run if everyone used the same kind of horrific table selection/sitting out when the value has left/got stacked and just waiting for them to reload etc.

I don't think you really understand why having the channel is so great for the site and the advice it gives means that Sky is better placed than ANY UK poker room to continue growing.
