Freeroll to fortune...yes, yet another progress diary. Current balance: £237.88

edited October 2012 in Poker Chat
The first freeroll of my challenge started at 7pm this evening.

I took part in the 7pm, £100 gtd freeroll and managed a respectable £0.85 for finishing in the top 20.

Now due to the limitations of my current bankroll I am going to have to bend the rules of BRM somewhat in order to make any progress.  I decided that for me the best way to get the ball rolling would be to play some heads up sit and gos which have proved to be profitable for me over the course of the month.

I played a number of the £0.55 - £1.10 turbocharged heads up games and have managed to spin my 85p into £7.10. Once I hit £20.00 I will aim to stick to BRM as much as possible, that said I'm not a complete bankroll nit and may bend the rules slightly ( and I do mean only slightly) in order to progress to a point where I can stick religiously to playing within my roll.

A few months back through a stroke of luck, I managed to do what I thought was the impossible; I took down the Saturday £10k bounty hunter for almost £2k. Now for most people this would be fantastic news with the opportunity to cash out a nice wedge and start a decent bankroll. Unfortunately for me it's where the nightmare began. I was a mega tilter!!!

I went on winners tilt for 3 to 4 months solid and went from being £2k up to £3k down. Now not so much of a problem for me financially as I'm in the fortunate position of having a well paid stable job and have very little in terms of outgoings, however from a mental perspective this loss had a huge impact on my "game", both on and off the table. I found myself getting more irritated at bad beats and coolers and was struggling to accept that it was my fault, blaming poor players and even the site on my losses when in reality it was my poor play and my unwillingness to give up hands, thinking I could outplay everyone. This In turn had an effect on me off the table and I found myself become irritable when I could play to recoup my losses or snappy and generally miserable towards people during and after a bad session.

Fast forward  4 months and finally common sense kicked in. I didn't want to quit the game I loved so much completely so I began to read and learn. I read "The mental game of poker" and slowly but surely I found my game improving and I started to head in the right direction...until recently. After a string of bad results tilt slowly started to creep back into my game and I decided that I need to set some goals and give myself a long term challenge to keep myself focused. I decided a furguson style £0.00 to £10k challenge would be a great achievement and something to keep me focused and will use this thread to log my progress along the way.

    SOUNDS FAMILAR Fellow SUPER TILTER

Thought had got it sorted but the GODS of POKER and my poor mental strength conspired against me.

    Good luck

WALK AWAY IF YOU FEEL SUPER TILT

Funny that I can offer advice but cannot do it myself

    lol

First of all thanks for all the words of encouragement and empathy it will help to keep me focused on the long road ahead.

Played a few sit and go heads up games during my lunch break
    1 x £1.10 and 2 x £0.55 turbocharged games

This evening i will continue on the same path of heads up sit and gos as quite frankly i suck at cash.
I will also play the 7pm £100 freeroll and if i finish work early enough the 4pm £50 freeroll too.
If i get my bankroll above £11.10 in time i may also play the cheap DTD for £1.10 as a one off, like i said i am sticking to management as much as possible but i will bend the rules slightly time to time as long as the reward well outweighs the risk to my bankroll.

On a slightly different note i have decided not to count this months C4P in my roll when it comes and will withdraw it straight away, i dont think its appropriate that i include the C4P that was earned before the challenge started, however, future C4P will be included in the bankroll.

thanks again for all the kind words

    current balance: £8.95

Glad to see you recognised the problems. The fact that you were posting so many bad beat stories on TPT thread  should have told us you weren't in the right frame of mind. I was thinking you should change your name to spornybol. Best of luck with this Kirbs and in the right frame of mind you will do it I'm sure.

lol kirb snap this is the same as my challenge. I started with the same challenge hense the running like Jesus/chris ferguason. All i played was freerolls to start with and i bumped it up to £200 within 10 days from nowt so it can be done. ive been up and down but its cost me nothing. GL to you kirb you can do it 10k seems like a lot but i think it can be done! not sure how long it will take but worth setting your sights high i reckon. GL m8

You've set the bar rather high! Anyway, I wish you the very best of luck with this and will be following with interest.

Thanks all... Dazler and Gary to be honest both of your threads were part of the inspiration for my challenge and have followed both with great interest for a while.

I think you are right in what you say that I have set the bar rather high, however, I felt that by doing so would give me something to be proud of and to be honest from the day that Furguson started his challenge I have felt its something I would like to try myself.

The beauty of the challenge is its not something I can't really fail at as such ... If I go broke I start again from £0.

In response to dagg, TBH I was getting bored of reading my bad beat/cooler posts myself and realised that if I'm bored then god knows what everyone else must think.

One quick update from me I'm now at £11.20 so will play the £1.10 DTD and post results later of that and the 7pm freeroll

Yea its a big challenge but is a challenge that would be worth getting too, i play this game for fun yes but ultimately to make lots of money eventualy whether i do i dont know but im gonna have a good go at it and 10k profit is an amount i want to be at so i can take it up to the next level. All it takes is one good bink and we could be half way there. Starting out its a grind and really does focus you for the journey. The goal does seem a million miles away but eventualy with enough thought put into it and a good learning and improving mind will make the journey that much more interesting and ultimately get us to the end. Gary and dev made 1k and met there goal and im sure that will continue and eventualy they too will get to a 10k profit margin. The good thing about this kind of challenge is you lose nothing and that way have no risk and play better poker. Im kinda stuck in a rut at the moment and not progressing past the £400 mark but it will come im sure. BR management is the key to start with and im slipping from that on odd occasions which is prob why im struggling i dont know but stick with it kirb and i reckon you can do it too. GL m8 ill be interested to see how you start off with this challenge and what games you will be playing. Just keep out of my personal space ;)

i will try and keep out of your personal space Dazler but i cant promise anything lol (private joke from the SPT final for those that are wondering).

I have decided against playing the £1.10 DTD tonight after realising im in the jackpot freeroll tonight as well as the 7pm one so i think my time would be much better spent on those rather than investing 10% of my bankroll in a tournement at this early stage, but who knows maybe next week.

I will try and keep my posts to one or two a day now as its going to be a long journey i don't want to take up page upon page of the forum.

Just brought this evenings session to a close:

I played the 7pm freeroll and cashed top 30 for 60p

I went out early in the jackpot freeroll when I shoved my pkt 9s into Ks on a dry board.

I then played DTD 2 but went out early stages when I hit the straight and the opponent hit the flush on the river.

This was followed by the 22:30 freeroll which was a tad disappointing to say the least, I was top 3 for the majority of the game until just before the bubble, at this point I hit a string of coolers and made a Badly timed shove into bullets to exit just before the money.

I then hit the heads up SNGs for a last push for the evening and managed to grind up to my current balance.

    Current balance: £20.05
    Profit today: £12.95

So all in all a profitable day. now that I have hit £20.05 I intend to tighten up somewhat until I build on it a bit, my plan is to grind it up to £22.20 at which point I will have a crack at two £1.10 HU SNGs and then return to the £0.55 HU SNGs until I hit £30.

Lunch time session done got to be honest played one or two games outside of my roll but I think at this stage in the game with very little to lose I think the reward outweighed the risk and I'm now at a position where I can stick to BRM as much as possible and start building on what I have.
Going to play a session this evening mainly £0.55 HU turbocharged games and the usual free rolls and hopefully get a decent cash in one of them.

    Current balance: £30.40

Very good luck kirbs . Great read and hope you achieve your target.

Mixed evening last night and a massive tilt streak:-(

Played some heads up cash and a few ring games and managed to grind my roll up to £55 unfortunately the evil demon made an appearance and I went on a tilt streak on heads up SNGs and a couple of mtts.

Managed to pull myself away from the tables kicking and screaming before it was too late but still very disappointed in myself.

Have decided that the best course of action is to have a night off and to do some reading will, probably play the 7pm freeroll but not buying into any cash, mtts or sit an gos until I'm confident that I am thinking logically and sensibly again and can play my A game.

Will be reading my highlighted sections of "The mental game of poker" which provided the turning point in my game last time and hopefully start to inject some logic into those bad beat / cooler situations and get the challenge heading back in the right direction again.

    Current balance: £25.75

Played 2 £100 freerolls this evening but no success spent most of this evening reading and generally relaxing, I feel the amount of time spent at the tables of late has probably had more of an effect on my game than I had previously thought and has definitely effected my concentration. hopefully this short break has done me some good.

I will probably do the same again tomorrow and them have a proper session on Friday evening, as I have previously mentioned there is no time period for the challenge so I am in no rush to build up the roll too fast.

    Current Balance: £25.75
