Marathon grind, should I try it? Is it possible?

edited October 2012 in Poker Chat
I have been thinking the last few days whether I should try a marathon all night 12 hour grind. I was thinking of starting at 8pm and finish 8am. Mainly playing cash but also some MTT's. first off is it possible with the aid of coffe to play that long, and also with the silly hours is there going to be enough traffic to bother trying. I have done Friday for 2 reasons, 1st off no work tomorrow and 2ndly I get the drunk ppl logging on at 2am! What do you think?

Traffic drops really low in the early hours so you might wanna get dinner earlier and start at like 4pm if thats possible.
Unless your happy to end up 1-2 tabling.

Certainly possible, I've done longer sessions (3pm-9am) many times under the influence so doing it properly with food/coffee/water etc should be easy.

Ofc around 4/5am the no. of tables I was playing decreased but I was still seeing 6+ ;)

Dunno what the traffic is like now but I could still chose from 6+ tables between 20nl and 50nl back in't day for most of the night even on weekdays, assume there's more now.

Site doesnt have much traffic after 2am.

If you want to try a marathon I think you have to start at either 12pm or 2pm.

These are the hours when liquidity start to increase. Site traffix peaks at around 7-11pm and then it starts to decreases.

I've never really found that.  IMO often at this time there is tonnes still running.

Its 5/6am that it really dies, quite understandably.  Even then there are still a few games running.

You should have no probs finding 8 tables or so under 50nl IMO.

    GL flash.  GRINDA.

Prefer not to grind during the day because of the mrs and kids, it's best for me to do it when they are asleep so I'm not ignoring them/telling them I'm busy all day. I struggle to play longer than 2 hours normally so it's going to be crazy if I try it. I'll have to sit out for 5 mins every hour or so I think. I'll see what I'm feeling like later :-)

    Only 12 hours?

I'd describe that as a half-marathon; you'll have to grind for 24 hours to impress me!

I guess you can trust scotty's opinion on grinding. Don't count on me.

If you do a marathon I think you should set yourself a target. Would make it more interesting.

Just win after 12 hours or how many buyins should you be up after 12 hours.
  • edited October 2012
Yeah 12 hours isn't really a marathon in poker terms.

Grab yourself a snicker and get some nuts..............

My target is to still have a bankroll left!!

I was thinking of doing updates through the night if people want, but not sure if there will be any1 awake to read them!

I've had a rough time with poker for a few months, its been really hard. Struggling to make profits. Don't get me wrong, I've still not put any money onto the site, but I've cashed out a hell of a lot less than I'd of liked to. I'm just breaking even. So I want to do this to hopefully prove to myself I will make money on a long grind and also bump up my C4P / King of cash place.

I've got half day today, but I'm going to watch my son do a presentation at school, then got a few other things to do. Hopefully I'll get some shut eye this afternoon and be up and ready to play this evening.

Go for it, would say grind evening into small hours - plus mix in some MTT's just ease the boredom )

    good luck

To be honest, I think 12 hours is very achievable. 24 hours + and you start to have problems..

People are saying 12 hours isn't enough. Do you fancy a stab at this:The longest time an individual has continuously played poker is 115 hours and was achieved by Phil Laak (Cyprus) at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino, NV, USA, from 2 to 7 June 2010.

I wonder what the longest grind online has been. I saw on another site that someone tried to do a 24 hour grind to pay for his rent and only managed 22 hours

If you grind 12 hours online you will do way more hands than 115 hours live.

if you have been breaking even for last few weeks/motn then i think having a 12hour session is probably the worst thing you could do.

play less tables focus more take regular breaks is the best thing to do imo

It was done live at the Bellagio but he was playing online. The Guiness Book of Records doesn't say how many tables he played. I assume it was just the one.

This is another record. Interesting to note his profit:

The most hands of online poker played in eight hours is 14,548, achieved by Randy “nanonoko” Lew (USA), in Vancouver, Canada, on 4 May 2012.

When the attempt was over Randy had a profit of $20.72. Randy “nanonoko” Lew is a member of **********Team Online.

You say that you want to do it when kids and mrs asleep so you don't ignore them. What you going to do all next day, sleep and ignore them, LOL.
  • edited October 2012
the big lesson from this thread is just not to have kids or get married.

    massively -ev ;-)

Going to start now... I'm not planning on playing maximum tables for 12 hours BTW, I'm going to chop and change depending on how I'm feeling and how many tables are running.

Didnt realise he did it online just assumed it was live. I did read about nanonoko but it was a bit contraversial as he was able to do more tables than anyone else is able to play.

oh sorry I just assumed it was live too.

    Impressive

hope you have fun and get some satisfaction from testing yourself.

just don't expect the challenge to be bankroll friendly, these types of challenges often aren't (well not for me anyway) - but what you learn from pushing yourself may well help you next time you are on your normal grind.

OK so I've done 3 hours now. It doesn't feel that long!

I've been on the wrong end of some coolers which has led me to lose a few stacks :-( but I've been playing OK so it hasn't been horrific. I think by my count I'm probs just over a buy in down, but when I've had set over set, KK vs AA and Top set with nut flush draw vs made flush all for full stacks I don't think it's too bad.

Tables seem to be filling with regs now, so I'm going to table select a bit and maybe drop 1 or 2 tables.

Getting pretty bored now TBH... I can't see me playing till 8am, so I might as well stop sooner rather than later so I'm not so tired tomorrow...

I do feel I've achieved something though... I've played well, made some money (I think) I'll find out when I cash out. I've also helped boost my C4P and get me back on schedule for 10k by the end of the month.

I have also showed myself that there is no reason why I should only play for 2 hours then stop, Ill have played 6 hours by the end of this without too much problem.
