Hi JWOX, & welcome to Sky Poker.
Wow, what a question!
Well it's a bit of a "wide" question, but here's a few things that I try to adhere to.
These are mostly generalisms.
1) Don't play too many hands. Bad players are invariably bad because they play too many hands.
2) Always remember "position" (that's LATE Position) is your biggest friend in poker.
3) It is ALWAYS better to bet than to call. Always. Put the pressure on the OTHER player, make him/her be the one who squirms uncomfortably.
4) Hands like A-K & A-Q versus an underpair are NOT 50/50 as most people think. Play them correctly - powerfully, by applying pressure, & you are, on average, 75-25 with these hands.
5) Never tilt. Idiots tilt, bad players tilt.
6) Don't get upset about bad beats. If you play the game properly, you'll get your better hands busted, on average, 1 time in 3. Accept it, it happens, it's poker. Moaning about it will not help - it will happen, move on, next case.
7) Remember it's just a game. Do as they will be done, treat others with the respct you expect them to treat you with.
8) Play WELL within your Bankroll. If you play above your Bankroll, the beats will hurt. A lot. And you'll get all upset & moany-woany.
9) Enjoy it. It's just a game.
10) Try to run good! If you get the technical basics right, you have many years of fun ahead of you, & it will cost you nothing. You won't win much, either, unless you have exceptional talent, but it's free recreation.

Channel 865 have not had a Live Show on Monday for over a year as far as I can recall GENERAL, though as a regular viewer I'm sure you knew that. There are in fact very good reasons why they don't broadcast Live Shows 7 nights per week now.
I'll pass your best regards onto the Channel Suits, though I'll swerve calling them "a bunch of wallies" if you don't mind, that'd be a tad disrespectful in my book.
After a hard weekend grafting away at low level tourneys and sit'n' go's I have slightly less in my pocket than which I started with on Friday. Like Tikay, I am a man of limited means so heading off and playing with the big boys is not an option. I played on a number of sites as well as this, [just for the variety].The end result being the same. Loonies who will pursue your pocket AA or flopped set to the ends of the earth with their suited A5 or their 94 offsuit and who inevitably go all in on the turn and hit their miracle card on the river.
Or the rubbish 38 suited you're dealt from UTG that you muck only to see the flop make you the flush or the straight. I was dealt 72 offsuit about 7 times [mucked naturally] only to see it flop the full house five times out of the seven!! I am seriously beginning to think of it as a premium starting hand!!
I am going to have a T-shirt printed with the logo "IF IT WASN'T FOR BAD LUCK I'D HAVE NO LUCK AT ALL".
Orders now being taken.........send me your sizes and I'll get a bulk lot made!!

Lol Mike, I sense it's a bit uphill for you right now!
OK, you lost a little over the weekend, but did you enjoy yourself? Did you look forward with a tingle in your stomach to each new session, to each & every fresh hand dealt to you - "will it be those Aces?" - "will I see a 5-8-9 Flop with my 6-7 & get paid?" - because although you don't realise it, that's all part of enjoying poker.
Remember what the legendary golfer, Gary Player, once said. "The more I practice, the luckier I get". That'd be my t-shirt I think.
I hope the warm wind of variance pays you a visit soon Mike, you are a good guy, & deserve it.
Hi Tikay, as you are generally a fairly conservative player I would appreciate your take on the situation I found myself in a couple of days ago. I was in the Primo semi lying 16th out of 31 with 26 to go through. I had 7200 chips and there were 7 or 8 players with less than 5000. UTG, with 10000, chips bet 3200. I was next to go and I had KK. I was thinking long and hard about whether to shove or fold. Would you consider folding in this situation or is KK just too good to let go?

You don't say what the Blinds were Seagull?
So I'm not sure of "where you were", but if 26 players were to get a Seat, & there are 31 left, & 7 or 8 of them have less than you, I think I'd pretty much shut up shop here, & be going to pass my way to the Seat.
IF you think you can get there without playing another hand, then thats exactly what you should do. But if you consider you are not yet home & hosed, well, just shove with those Kings.
It's a close one, & depends on the Blinds, but in a Super-Sat, thats the default setting - shut up shop if you have the seat in sight.

The blinds were 400/800 and I actually had 7615 chips with 15 players below me. He raised 4*BB. I shoved (!!!!), thinking double up and relax. He called me with AA and I was out iin 30th. I have never considered folding KK but I did think about it as the time bar went down.

Ugh.
So you had 9 x BB, but there were 15 players with less, & you were 4 or 5 off the seat?
It's quite a close one actually, but it's still a fold. In fact even AA is probably a fold there.
When playing Super Sats you have to use a completely different mindset to "normal" Tourney poker. In this case, your target was to finish in the top 26.
The default play there, every single time, is to Pass, but I can understand your play, as your stack was gettting close to "marginal".

hi tikay!! just wanted to know if you liked my mad run of hands in last nights tko?? and did you get me moved to another table in the end?? Posted by donkeyplop
That was some heater!
With 3 "aways", including the BB to my SB, you & the BB were the only stacks I could attack. And you woke up with A-A, K-K, K-K, A-K, J-J........
So I "had a word" & got you moved. Blinds were now 200-400, & I had 4,000-ish, so I made a shove with J-8, & the guy who took your Seat called me with A-J.

In Response to Re: Ask Tikay? Double-ended straight draws : Hi Ray Yes you are correct, you are around 32% to hit an open ended straight on the turn, but only 16% on the river, it depends on how much its going to cost you, if you ar 2/1 to hit it, lets say there are 100 chips in the middle and someone bets 50, you have pot odds of 3/1 yes?, and would call hopefully having both pot and draw odds, but if there is are 100 chips in and someone raises 500?, then what are you going to risk those chips to chase the draw? debateable I would probably fold em and wait for a better spot, we all play poker differently the choice is yours, good luck Posted by acebarry10
Cheers AceBarry and Tikay for replying. In all honesty, I'm still a relatively new player and odds are not something I've got my head around yet. Perhaps that's where the problem lies. I'll focus on that part of my game next to get me out of some of the situations I find myself in. Be lucky.
Hello, if it has been asked before please accept my apologies, how long on average do the tournaments ie Bounty Hunter,Deep Stack etc last, 1hr,2hrs whatever,I have a LBT?. Kind regards. Alivehat60
It depends on the anount of runners, a deepstack takes around 4-5 hours, a Bounty Hunter 3-4, a Standard No Limit Holdem 3-5 and 1-3 for the quicker games.
New to all this and jargon PL or NL i assume NL No Limit what is PL? Posted by daley51
Hi Arthur,
Just to expand upon MereNovice's answer.....
The betting structure used in poker can be one of three.
NL - Which is the most common these days, for Hold Em, any way. (NL)
PL - Pot Limit, as mentioned by Mere. (PLHE, PLO etc)
LIMIT - Usually prefixed by "L".
NL is very popular right now, anyone can figure out what to bet, it's a brawn rather than brain thing really, you can use your stack to pressurise players. Not very subtle, but it's fun. Most "younger" players think it's the most skilful variant. Equally, few of them have played PL or L!
PL is used almost always for Omaha, failing which peeps would just play "Omaha Roulette" & shove every hand. It has great subtleties. One problem is that players & dealers these days are not used to having to work out what is in the Pot, & what a pot-size bet is.* The Brits have a very good record at the WSOP in PL Events.
LIMIT. Almost never laid in the UK these days. But go to America, & it's extremely popular. Ditto on Mainland Europe, in Amsterdam for example, during the Master-Classics, there will be 20 Cash-Tables on the go, of which 15 will be "LIMIT". LIMIT is used a lot in Stud, it makes for tremendous fun & skill, & it forms part of any HORSE Event.
* Pot Limit, what is a pot sized bet? It's the sum total of what is in the Pot already, plus your call, add that lot up, & the answer is your Bet, or Raise. First to act, or in an unopened Pot, it is 7 times the Small Blind. How so?
Well, assume the Blinds are 100-200.
The SB is in - 100 - the BB is in - 200, now we add our CALL, & that lot comes to (100 + 200 + 200) = 500. So the max bet we can make is 500, add to that our "call", & that's 700, or 7 x SB.
If someone has LIMPED already, it is NINE times the SB. (100 + 200 + 200 + our Call of 200) = 700, so, our RAISE is 700, which together with our 200 Call = 900, or 9xSB.
Players will never agree on what is the most skilful, it's just each to their own really. Sadly, the majority of Online & Live Poker in the UK is NL, & so the skills & subtleties of PL & L are disappearing.
I see you've been enlightening one of the less experienced guys on the ins and outs of the various forms of the poker family. As you say Tikay, Limit or 'Fixed Limit Poker' is not as popular as No Limit in this country. Possibly now because we're used to the fast and exciting no limit game, the youngers players today being fed on an almost exclusive diet of NL.
As you mention it seems to be more popular in Europe and also across the pond. The dynamics of the game seem to be far different in limit poker as opposed to the NL game with the emphasis more on calculation of odds as once again, opposed the 'let's shove'em all-in and see if you dare call me' mentality that exists certainly more in the low level NL tournaments.
On a certain site that provides a regular limit freeroll hosting a 9000 player line up you can find a regular contingent of NL players in the early level employing no limit tactics of raise and re-raise etc in the hope that their hand wins. When I can be bothered with these I just generally sit back for the first 20 minutes and let them slaughter each other.
I find I like [ and have a little more sucess] playing limit but I find that the ony place I can get a game these days is on the above mentioned site. No Limit is OK but if you make a big mistake in your read on someone or you're up against some snottie kid who wipes out your 3 aces with a miracle hand you're out the door but with limit if you make a mistake the first time you can always pinch your chips [and then some] back subsequently.
Years ago, when I first played Fixed Limit Stud Tourneys (over in Sweden), I was taught, & realised, that you pretty much sit-out in the early Levels. Same as any Tourney for me, really.

Hi Teddy.
The best 5 cards win so AKQJ9 beats AKQJ6, by virtue of the better kicker, which plays.
So the answer is A-9.
I believe it is a split pot.
n Response to Re: Ask Tikay?:
BOTH players have A-A-K-Q-J. neither kicker plays.
Its a split pot, they are both playing the best 5 cards AAKQJ
