I'm still struggling with mtt's. Was around  20bb in a bhunter tonight, just below average stack in 36th place with 80 left. 28 are paid, but I'm not as*ed about mincashing, I'd rather risk busting  now trying to get a stack together. I have 33 on the button and a fairly active player utg min raises. I just jam here with a fairly wide range.  Is it just total spew to be actively engineering flip situations / trying to get folds from frequent openers? Can we ever fold a pocket pair here, we cant ever flat  can we? If we fold 33 wheres our cut off? I find the 50/100 - 100/200 levels to be the most tricky, esp far from the bubble. Cheers, TEDDY

Hey Teddy. This 33 spot is pretty marginal. Whilst I can't really fault jamming vs an active player, we could pass and look for better spots. We have a great 3bet shove stack, but low PP's are so vulnerable, even more so in a BH where we can get looked up so wide (great if we have QQ, less great if we have 33). And sometimes an aggro guy wakes up with a hand! I'd be more concerned by the position of the raise than anything; even loose aggro guys don't tend to open UTG super light. If we get called, we ain't gonna be in great shape, but I think jamming will sometimes fold out hands that crush us (44,55). It's a fine line!

Interesting asking about flatting. We can flat and we can't flat. We can't flat with the intention of no set no bet, as this just won't be a profitable move, and there will be almost no boards we like. We can flat, however, using our position and power of our relative short stack, to possibly get villain off their hand on a later street. This is a risky move, obviously, and table dynamic will mostly determine if you can get away with it. If our image is relatively tight, we could flat 33 as if we were flatting a monster, and play it accordingly. Like I said though, it is a potentially risky strategy, and you're relying on villain being somewhat of a thinking player to pull this off.

    Good luck sir!

Thanks hhyftrftdr. these marginal spots can really make or break a tournament,  innit.

Love your logic. My follow up question would be, given that we are a below average stack in a situation where we a far from the bubble, is it worth engineering or actively looking for these marginal /  high variance spots in order to be better placed for a run at the top spots. In particular ive found that being a big stack around the bubble to be highly profitable. Also when we out chip our opponents we can flip the bounty hunter mentality in our favour: people are less inclined to go after people who they cant take a head prize off.

In the situation above utg folded after the bb called with ATs. If I knew that would happen id make the play 100% of the time. Is that reckless?

    Cheers,
    TEDDY

Teddy, I have seen this. However, it feels like someone has been sat on my head for 7 hours, after a few too many shandies last night. So shall try and give a detailed (yeah right!) reply later when I can actually engage my brain.

    Hey Teddy.

Yes, approaching the bubble as a big stack is always lovely. I think it can be worth taking the odd risk or 2 en route to try and amass as many chips as possible to take towards the bubble and beyond. Ultimately, we'll have to win a few flips at any given time in every tournament we play, they are almost impossible to avoid.

With regards to the 33 hand, yeah if we know we're flipping then I suppose it's not a bad spot to gamble. But thats what it is, a gamble. We'll come out with chips only about 50% of the time. It's a pretty standard spot if we are playing 10bb or so, but 20bb gives us a bit more leverage and possibly the chance to look for a better spot. The problem with 33 if we get looked up is that we are flipping at best. I think it's a poor call from A10 after that action, but I bet when he cold called your shove you thought 'uh-oh'.

Now don't get me wrong, I love a good gamble. But I think I would rather 3bet jam something like 9 10s (providing we have F/E) than a tiny pair. Yes, if we're called then we can never really be ahead, but we are also unlikely to be dominated; racing vs small to medium pairs, live cards vs picture cards. Even if we run into premium like AA/KK then I'd rather have high suited connectors than a small pair (not sure what the maths are on this mind).

The fold equity element of tournament poker is so important. I'm sure you've seen the various debates on it recently on the forum, but around the 20bb stack is a great time to get busy. We should be 3bet shipping loads of hands vs late position openers (table dynamic dependent of course). Whereas I might pass 33 to an utg raise, I wouldn't hesitate to 3bet all in with J10s on the button for 18bb to a cutoff raise, for example. Picking the spots to go to war for your stack will make or break your tournament ultimately, and winning pots uncontested whilst relatively short stacked keeps our heads above water.

  • edited October 2013
Thanks a ton for that. I get impatient and 20bbs buys us at least two orbits before our fold equity starts getting depleted I suppose.  appreciate what you say about picking our spots, battles and the importance of the qualities of our hand.

Looking back its a spew spot for sure. I shouldnt settle for a spot where I'm at best flipping, when I can learn to sniff out spots that are much better.

    Thanks hhyftrftdr food for thought.

    Cheers,
    TEDDY
