    have you tried pro-plus

Have you tried giving poker a break for a week and getting some fresh air/doing different things? Concentrating on something like poker for a period of time must have an impact on our brain function, I am no expert but I do know when I have a fairly long session and had some bad beats or particularly difficult sessions I find I am extremely tired the following day (present circumstances excluded)

Really hope you follow up on docs and keep pushing for answers, it does seem nowadays the easy answer is a packet/bottle of pills., but we do have to do our part as well in keeping balance in our lives, good luck my good man.

Doh! are you sure you can't be tempted? You are the ideal candidate to take it on and help me out in the process :) Let me know if you change your mind, can add you on some social media and get some SNAP based convo going! re the games... Some players literally wait for the nuts, I have a reg who plays 7/6 over 700 hands.  That's pretty easy to play against though right :)  But overall it's not so bad.  Alot of players playing pretty solid TAG stats, if they have big holes in their games I certainly can't find them.  But there are also alot of limpers and people calling down in horrible spots and open shoving 70xbb pre with 66 etc. Loads of fish to make it profitable.  It's ideal for me atm as I get tired and lose concentration easily, getting more hands when I can actually play is a big advantage. Surely you can spare an hour to give it a shot? ;)

Hmmm not selling it to me I'm afraid.

Not sure why I would be ideal - I suck at NL cash so losing money faster at more hands per hour isn't tempting. The only time I consistently won at cash was FL probably a decade or so ago!

Having to reactivate or reg a new account elsewhere is a barrier

Dont want to turn this into a HUD debate - but the fact I would know that the regs are nearly all using one would put me off.

Bad players being more tempted to the format I kind of get. The same applies to Spinups, in theory harder to beat the game but in practice does the weaker player pool, coupled with the blunted edge for the proper regs make them profitable?

I am still trying to work the answer out to that on spinups - slightly up on a sample of 155 sessions (I think I need 1000 sessions to be even remotely convinced either way).

The tempting bait there is the opportunity to discuss hands/strategy offline - if I could do that on spinups I would snap it up.

    Good evening.

    Phantom, I'm done with it.

I cannot do anything in the games, and the stress it causes me aint worth it. hahaha.

    I admit defeat.

My initial goal was to play 20,000 hands at 5nl zoom, just to prove I can beat it before taking on 10nl zoom. (This method of confidence building was suggested by Balugawhale in an article I read)

Well I'm at 18k, I'll complete the challenge then that's it.

It's done everything but instill confidence :D

    -----

    Anyway, livening things up abit!

I returned to sky, and did not lose.

Makes me a liar, as I swore I'd never play on here again below 20nl.

But it just seemed like the best option available tonight, that's how bad things have been going elsewhere.

1 thing sky has in it's favour over other sites is the chatbox.

Not for the normal/boring cliche' reasons such as "banter" etc.

    But some quality fish comments.

"That's 4 times he's had AA all in against a lower pair tonight"

"And he won all of them apart from 1. unreal"

    <3

    ---------

I looked further into the list of football league grounds in Yorkshire that I haven't been to, and there are actually 3.

    Bramall Lane.
    New York Stadium.
    Glandford Park (Scunny)

Sheff U v Bury tomorrow to start ticking them off.

Looked around the websites of Casinos in Sheffield.

    Smallest cash game is £1/2

That wont be happening then :(

    -----

    Roll = 1012 pounds and 22 pence.

The place is a dive, s*** ground. no fans.............but it is in Lincolnshire mate (mores the pity because Yorkshire would be welcome to have them haha).

    aha!!

    In the words of Regitimepoker...

    "Waller you legend".

Saved me a day out in Scunny.

I wonder why google lied to me :(

If you're a local, you must've seen the series of SKINT that was shot there?

Focussing on a bloke called Dean and his tribe of young ens.

1 of my favourite TV series of all time that. He's abit like Don, great comedy character, who somehow actually exists in real life!

    ----

Game of 2 halves at the footy today.

First half as drab as I've seen live.

    2nd 45, 1 of the better halves I've seen.

I was surprised to see the Blades had 'friend of thread' Jac's favourite Derby player of recent times Mr.Salmon up top alongside the Donny legend Billy Sharp.

From what I heared, the United faithful enjoy watching him play equally as much as Jacco did, too. :D

    -----

Night off cards. (although I may have won @ SNAP earlier! :o )

Looking forward to the Boxing and then an early night. (shattered)

Back to poker & the deciding ODI tomorrow.

  • edited September 2015
Haha yes mate, it has saved you a dreadful day out. The town is as bad a Skint made out! Unfortunately the next series of Skint was set in Grimsby, but in that series it painted a TOTALLY false picture of the town ofc!.............but yeah I agree, great programme that always made you feel a bit better about your own life haha.

So, it appears you have just the one ground to attend for the full set now. Not a bad achievement that!

Re: the boxing. Can't wait. There hasn't been this much expectation about a british heavyweight for many years (apart from Price until his chin was found out). Personally I think he would win a World title fight now, but I guess he needs rounds and a step up in class on the way. He might even have a glass jaw himself but somehow I doubt it.

Try a week or 2 off poker, get yourself a puppy, drink plenty of water and eat lots of fruit & veg.

    How's Nathan Tyson getting on?

Joshua is ready now............there is no domestic fighter who can beat him, he would destroy Fury. Who else is there?? He will batter White, then they seriously need to up the class. World title fight within 3 fights gotta be?????

I don't know much about boxing but it sounds like the heavyweight division is polarised.

It's either elite fighters where the pundits claim AJ would be an underdog at this stage, or fighters where he can win as and when he likes.

    Not much inbetween.

Having seen White fight last night he's got no chance. It's going to be another waste of time.

It's just a matter of how/when AJ stops him. Apparently there's bad blood between them 2, so he might take his time to find a spot to punch him over the ropes!

As an aside, it's amazing how many black people have the surname White. And White people are called Black. :/

    -----

I watched the fight before between Hibbert and Ryan where the latter bossed and was well ahead on the cards before injuring his back and effectively retiring as he couldn't continue.

I thought the celebration of the other chap was very poor given he'd won by default.

I'd liken it to disconnecting HU in the super roller.

Would I expect the other chap to take the walkover victory? Yes.

Would I expect him to celebrate, brag, and rub my mis-forunte in my face? No.

    Done!

Typical the 2 sessions after I say I'm quitting this silly format I win 10 buyins in 2,000 hands.

The mini challenge, to play 20,000 5nl hands was set after reading an article written by poker coach 'BalugaWhale'.

    He wrote.....

    PART 1: Confidence
For me, I gained confidence from having two things: a complete bankroll and an absolute knowledge that I am a winning player. The only way to be sure you're a winning player at any given limit is to beat that limit consistently for a considerable number of hands... so thats what you are going to do. Play the limit you're at for 20k hands AT LEAST.. When you're done, check your ptbb/100... if you don't think its high enough, do it again

My win rate over the 20k hands was 9.7bb/100.

    Am I happy with that?

    Yes.

But I ran significantly above ev, the winrate of my ev line would be around 6xbb/100 I think.

Would I be happy with that? Probably not.

    Am I doing it again?

    Am I F!

    what now then?

    I dunno. :/

    Pie n chips prob.

    --------

    Bankroll is Peaking @ £1045.50.

Back later, hopefully with a plan ! :/

Or go to 30nl and give splashies and the boys the spanking they deserve after they just sent me packing with my tail between my legs :)
  • edited September 2015

    Soooooo, no 20nl.

Poker has been very slow this week, the tiredness thing is ongoing and not getting any better, if anything worse.

I did abit of gardening mid-week using a chainsaw to trim down the connifers in the back garden.

The day after was not pleasant!

Anyone who's ever played cricket will understand the aches and pains you get the day after the first day back (normally a net session) at pre season training.

You're told (and its common sense) to ease in to it.

Yet by the end of the session you're charging in trying to bowl 90mph because you feel fine.

Then the next day muscles that've been in-active for months of pre season ache beyond belief, reminding you why it wasn't a good idea to do that!

    Felt abit like that :/

    -------

I didn't feel like grinding, so I used the $100 or so I have left on bwin/partypoker to donk around on abit of 10nl./ (this isn't 'challenge'/'spin up' money)

    So it was going sweet!

Why not play some 10nl 'on roll' ?

888 Friday night, great spot, great timing.

    Lets go.

    Oh. :(

Nice time for the runbad to hit.

When I'm moving up a level.

    That hasn't happend before.

It took me 20,000 hands at the level below to win $100.

I've lost half of that in 1/20th of the time at the next step up.

No wonder my mental game is fekkd.

    -----

So probably about break even overall, but down a chunk on the challenge.

    Roll = £1018.

    -----

I've declined the New York stadium in favour of a day out at a local market town again today.

Big local derby for them v Sheff Wed next month, if I can somehow get tickets that'll be the game of choice.

Maybe some more poker tonight if I can face it.

Good luck all grafting on and off the tables this weekend.

A hand, for those of you that like that kind of thing.

Opponent is a very solid, tag regular.

    20/17, 400 hands

    9% 3b

    3b blind v steal w/ KK/AK and A9s

Thing is here, for some reason, he's playing sub 100xbb

He's on some other tables with > 100xbb stacks, 888s auto top up was glitching for me today so I assume it is for him here too.

Playing 70xbb effective made me confused.

When he bets turn for $2.55 he only has $2 left.

I donked, he had Kings. ^ doh.

    ------

    Ola.

Just a quick update, it's not very exciting at the moment but I still have to 'keep score' at least during good, bad and indifferent periods or the challenges just don't work.

Volume still low, still struggling away @ 10nl on 888.

Could be running better, should be playing better.

    Will keep trying !

    -----

Eyeing up the Chesterfield v Burton Albion game this weekend, another new stadium and the visitors are top of the league so should bring a decent following and looks like it should be a good game.

After the Japan win v the Saffers I was well up for watching some Rugby Yawnion, the double header this weekend at Ellend Road looked good.

Cheapest ticket is £65 for Italy v Canada.

    GG.

    Round ball it is.

    Roll £1038.50.

Ugh, 4th consecuative post by myself, bad times for the diary writer!

Isn't going to be helped by another uneventful poker update.

The challenge continues to plod on slowly, with mixed fortunes at 10nl on 888 which is using 'challenge bankroll' whereas it continues to be plain sailing in the tougher partypoker/bwin 10nl games which uses 'non-challenge' bankroll.

The goal again is to play 20k hands on each before moving up (or repeating if results aren't satisfactory)..

888 so far (click to enlarge graph)

    Bwin so far

About a third of the way through and the graphs look ok.

More importantly I feel like I'm getting better by playing alot of hands, I've always done little bits of hand reviews and stuff but never any off table learning.

I seem to get alot out of simply playing hands and learning by doing but need to make more effort between sessions to study theory zzzzzz

The problem is poker theory is such a huge subject (especially for cash) so I never have any idea where to start.

And if I do, the subject I chose normally refers to or requires good knowledge of another area which I haven't yet studied yet as everything inter-links.

For that reason it always feels like a waste of time.

It would need to be really well structured for me to want to put the effort in.

The only thing I can think of which would be somewhat structured is a book.

    But a) everyone says don't bother with books. And b) I cnt b R'sd with books :/

    ----------

Declined the chesterfield game yesterday in favour of Sheff U v Donny.

First time watching the Rovers for yearsss.

Wasn't a fun experience, the game started pretty good, we looked good going forward and awful at the back, so 2-1 after 20-odd minutes was shaping up to be a good game.

Then the ref decided everyone was enjoying the skills of the players too much, and not paying him enough attention so he made a ridonkulous decision to send a Donny player off and that killed the game.

We did ok to hang on in with alot of luck but never looked likely to even it up.

Mr Sammon was vul when he smashed the crossbar from 30 yards! Helooked very threatening, that does not bode well for our defence this season.

    gg Sheff U.

    ------

The health has taken an upturn this week.

I don't want to get carried away with it (coz I've just slept 11 of the last 14 hours after footy yest and feel nackered this morning) but the doctor said improvements would begin to happen after around a month of taking the pills.

I've been taking them 1month and 1 day today.

    Please holddddddddddddddddddd.

Everyone always says it but I am OFFISHIALLY using my 1 time.

    -----

Couple of mates have offered to stake the challenge roll to play 20nl on sky. (effectively 10nl 'on roll' as we'll be in for 50% each)

Means I can play 5% instead of 7.5% rake. Taste the next level without so much pressure and therefore less risk of a trademark doh implosion. And it's just a session by session thing, so I can gg it whenever.

Seems a no brainer, and will be happening at some point over the next fortnight.

    ------

TV sport, roasted food, probably more sleep, and maybe some pokerz today.

    GL Sunday grinderz.

    -----

Oh I also went in to a 'proper' casino for the first time yesterday too.

I think I was the only 1 in there!

    It was very 'powwwshhhhhh'.

A bar. 20ish poker tables, 2 or 3 of each blackjack and roulette, then all the way round the outside of the room was what looked to be FOBs.

Comedy exchange with the barmaid when I ordered a pop.

    She said it was free.

I told her, I'm only here for half an hour for a drink (as literally nothing was happening) and I wouldn't be gambling, so she should let me pay. (probably about 4 quid or summat)

I assumed their line would be to give me free stuff to tempt me to punt (?)

Looked like there was a moment of hesitation before she insisted it was free.

She thought I would give in to temptation!!!!

    I...didn't. :)

Maybe I just misunderpitated the whole thing and it really is just standard or she was being nice, idk.

Don't think morning grinders exist irl. At least not on weekends :)

    Morning JJ,

    1) Am breaking your 4 post dry streak. It sucks to write diaries & not get interaction.

    2) Good to hear the health graph is maybe heading north.

    3) Poker theory books? Careful. You ever heard of The Emperors New Clothes?  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Emperor%27s_New_Clothes

    4) Can't begin to imagine why a profitable & well-rolled CASH GAME player like you wants to give away x% of your profits to a staker. The world must have passed me by if that makes sense, "but each to their own" works.

    5) Which Casino/cardroom was it?

And one of my own. How many points will Sunderland end up with this season?

Although that throws up a dilemma, do I reply now, or maximise the diary attention equity of having you post on it last by leaving it as long as possible? :D

    "The theory of diary writing"

The staking option is the lesser of 2 evils.

My mental game is beyond pathetic. it might help. Probably wont. But it's one of the few things I haven't tried and it may only be for a few sessions.

    ---

It was Genting club sheffield, just up 'the hill' from the train station, next to the city SHU campus.

I don't know when it was built but I may have walked just past it twice a day almost every midweek day for 4 yrs not knowing it was there!

Would've lost a fortune in it back then though, so will chalk it up as (literally) disguised walk good.

It was about 11am, some employee asked me if I was there for the xxxx poker tournament.

I said no, and before I had time to enquire as to what it was he'd rushed past me :/

I think it was the final of some pub league or something.

It's very easy for me to get to, but the cash games are apparently way too high for me. And talking to my friend 'themoose' who works at a casino the other side of Sheff, any MTT would end way beyond the time of the last train home, so it'll be difficult to get involved in any games anytime soon.

Mid term goal for sure though :)

Well now, here's the thing - you have, perhaps by accident, put your finger on why poker forums are in decline, a subject of which, sadly, I am well versed.

With Twitter, Eff-Book & all that stuff - I even know grown ups - GROWN UPS - who still play Video Games - people expect OTHERS to provide their entertainment, as it's easier than making the effort to post.

Look at this Community, for example - maybe 10 people do a lot of the work, whilst the vast majority just read, rather than post.

I know this only too well, as I have an interest in a forum elsewhere which is, ever so slpowl, dying. People on there point fingers at everyone - me, the Mods, this that & the other - when discussing why post count & interaction is down, but they are the ones who never make the effort to start interesting threads. It's the world of entitlement

Keep posting, it's become a really well balanced (poker/non poker) Diary, & lots of people love reading it.

It makes no sense to you or me, no, but it makes sense to Dohhhhhhh, so it's fine.

The irony, of course, is that here we have a self-confessed nit, & proud of it (me too), who is deliberately GIVING AWAY x% of his profit.

It will never make sense to me, but to understand the why, you have to understand the person, & I do.

I hope it works out for him. Meanwhile, whoever is staking him, well done, that's a season ticket to easy money, drip drip drip, every day. For the staker, this is Eldorado, profit without risk.

Meanwhile, whoever is staking him, well done, that's a season ticket to easy money, drip drip drip, every day. For the staker, this is Eldorado, profit without risk. MBN.

    Lol it's me :P

Seriously though, all the things that have been mentioned to JJ here, I've already said to him a million times. He's got the roll to play 20NL and he certainly has the ability. To give away a % is just silly because he does'nt need to... BUT the thing holding him back imo is a huge lack of self confidence. I guess we all get that when we step out of our comfort zone, whether it's moving from £5 DYMs to £11 DYMs or from the £11 BHs to playing the £33 mains, we assume everyone is SO much better etc.

So in theory now he's just playing 10NL (cos he has 50% of his action at 20NL) but he gets to pay 5% rake instead of 7.5% and hopefully (which is the idea behind my staking offer) is he plays some 20NL, realises it's not half as scary as he thought then can go do it on his own. Fwiw, I've always told him I'm happy to buy a % of his action in pretty much any cash game or any MTT on Sky... cos as Tikay said, it's easy money for me

Largest grossing entertainment industry in the world, and as a scotsman one im proud to see we play a big role in. Specifically at video games aimed for adults only.

Worries me you seem slightly shocked on this. Although that maybe just the way im reading it.

Gotta get the dig in publically.

few months back you started same roll as me. I believe youve played alot more and crushed and have a much larger roll, however i cant grasp why you haven't moved up instead of just rotating where you play at similar levels. You have more than enough ability to move up. just have the confidence man.

On another note, how was the footie

I'm always surprised by how many people play vid games, until I remember that I pretty much do the same thing for a living. It is something that I'm completely ignorant of though and I imagine TK is the same. He prefers bridges and I prefer... books? on that note, jj, read no limit application or mathematics of poker for theory stuff, both good reads. These theory books won't be outdated like Hellmuth's "how to win at poker", so it's a safe purchase. MoP can be quite difficult to get through if you're not great at maths, but give it a shot imo

also, on the lack of comments, don't look into it. best diary otf

I had a couple of books in mind that I know I have saved in an email somehwere...

    LTBR and The Poker Blueprint.

I've started both before but got 'stuck'.

I like to think I'm abit better now so may have more joy.

Neither of these any good nowardays?

Long time reader Dohhh but prob not qualified to comment on the things you write about poker, but it's an education and very entertaining read.
    Please keep it up
