each person may WANT something, but NEED something else. so its up to the gift giver to decide which to choose.
you can be as subjective as you want, a starving child in africa may need food, so do you give them money ??
an innocent man in jail may want justice, but needs freedom.

i think the ability to GIVE a gift, can be seen in some circumstances as a corrupting influence.
if in business you want something, you may give me a GIFT to influence me to choose you over others.

it may be how do you feel when a gift is given, is it that, that person was thoughtfull ?? or that person is cheap, or even that person spent more than they can afford ?? or just smile and throw it away when the,ve gone.

It goes without saying if someone wants a Gun, Knife, Bomb, or any other inappropriate gift then they should be disappointed. Oxfam and others provide the clothes to the needy and free representation for the wrongly convicted. The fact that a person needs clothes desperately does not mean you cant provide both its not a one or other situation as far as giving goes. If someone needs help then that is given separate a present is just that, a personal gift.
and your ability to "quote" d ick emery, has further tightened my "range" on your demographic.
