Agree with Bugaloo that the Chat box section would be better shown once a month and this hour could be used to show more hands from Mtts or cash because as someone said above this really is the main attraction of the sky poker channel.
I myself enjoy the banter between the guys on the show whatever the subject because it is always done in a lighthearted way and gives the show a more friendly appeal.
Would love to see the old mastercash format brought back with a full night dedicated to cash and all levels of play shown even if this was only to happen once a month.
Also really enjoyed the section the other night where one players hole cards were hidden.
Massive +1 to some of the guests sky have had on the shows though and imo this part of the channel can not be improved
i think the shows can be a bit choppy & agree with many that the main attraction in the past was playing the main event & following it in real time on the telly.
i also think one evening per week dedicated solely to cash games would be good, just like the old saturday show.
I think the main arguments against a monthly Chat Box show would be:
1) Just as nobody really wants to hear about an unknown player winning an unknown tournament, people don't really care about something that happened three-and-a-half weeks ago.
2) If something noteworthy does happen it's inevitable that it will be discussed on the regular shows. If Full Tilt re-launched tomorrow, it would be absurd for the presenters and analysts to ignore it for another couple of weeks so they can make a Chat Box show of it.
I think Chat Box, if it is to continue, must be a weekly show for it to remain relevant. An hour is far too long though.
I can't agree with AceGooner that more people would watch the show on Saturdays than Tuesdays. People like to go out on Saturdays and there is a great deal more competition on other channels on Saturday anyway. Match Of The Day or one of those Ant and Dec shows would be examples. People are far more likely to stay in on a Tuesday. I much prefer the Tuesday/Thursday/Sunday schedule.
Finally, I would not want to see the return of celebrity guests playing in the studio. Back in ye' olden days when this was a feature it was always a bit tedious. Most of the guests were either not very good players or not very interesting characters. In fact many were neither good nor interesting. The understandable reluctance of the presenters and analysts to be truly critical of the mistakes these players were making and the inabilty of these players to explain their thought processes made for pretty unedifying viewing.
Besides this; bringing these people onto the show, only to shove them into the corner for all but five minutes of every hour didn't make alot of sense to me. If they're not knowledgable enough to make a full contribution, then why bring them onto a poker show at all? Soccer Saturday doesn't need cameos from Daniel Negreanu or Phil Hellmuth. Why should Sky Poker bring on Kenny Dalglish or Jimmy Armfield?
Looking at it the other way; if you get the chance to have a fantastic poker mind on the show, why would you want them sitting quietly, clicking mouse buttons?
BoringLoner i have to agree with almost every word you've said. To be honest i hate the Chatbox. Thats my bath time now. I hink someone was talking about German Nationalists Chamionships the other day and it ended up with Stuart Rutter basically seryotyping every nation in poker. I have no interest in some guy i've never heard of winning a competition i've never heard of before.
Yes i would have interest in some player i've never heard of who is British and won a WSOP event, and i do have interest in whos won SPTs, UKIPTs and EPTs(only when held on British or Irish soil or a Brit wins).
Insead of Chatbox maybe these topics could be used slowly throughout the entire night as the break up between hands when their not doing the competition at that point.
The poker clinic i used to love, but i believe theirs leagal issues regarding 99% of clinic hands not being from a tv table. The only other option is that Sky make every table a tv table.
Fwiw i'd like to see another dedicated cash show on a Saturday night but imo it would have to work slightly different.
Hour 1 is NL10 Hour 2 is NL20 Hour 3 is NL50 Hour 4 is NL100(or 200) Hour 5 is Top of the Pots.
Keep it simple and fair to all bankrolls in my opinion then. I know recently NL10 has been shown alot but i always did feel in previous the big names got too much tele time. Which is good because we can see how they play but i think even the experts sometimes struggle because often a hand is leveled or reads based, which of coarse makes life dificult for the expert and will always confuse a new player watching for the first time to learn the basic principles of poker.
Just so it's clear that I'm not just trying to be contrary; I agree that it would be nice to revisit more frequently the old format of following a single tournament all the way through. However, I do also enjoy the current segmented format. The old format excluded hands from being requested from other events and meant you had to fork out a significant amount to play the main event to even have a chance of seeing your play. I wouldn't want a return to that as the norm.
Although it's hardly an original idea, I would suggest a monthly Super-Roller type event could be a good solution. There are still repeats of the Jubilee Super-Roller being shown so obviously it is possible.
Again, though, I'm forced to say I wouldn't agree with bringing back a full Mastercash night. There's enough Mastercash action in the shows as they are: Mastercash on Tuesdays, Top Of The Pots on Thursdays and on Tonight on Sky Poker on both Tuesdays and Sundays. That's four hours a week - the same as the old Saturday Mastercash shows.
You have a point on the whole TV table issue for the poker clinic, Don. Though, since they only show four or five hands a week in that segment, I think they could probably manage. If there weren't enough TV hands posted in the clinic, I'm sure they could stick some hand requests in there too. Shouldn't be a big problem.
Of course, I doubt that much of this will actually be implemented anyway. We can but hope. lol
on reflection i would probably prefer if chat box was just ditched as borin loner states the important news is implemented into existing shows anyway Posted by bugaloo
Maybe you could replace this hourly slot with 60 minutes of steelrods bad beats!!!
Watched the show tonight, and loved the banter, and humour between Teeeeks and Hartigan.
I understand the clamour for more hands, and like a bit of poker myself.
However, for the casual player, or someone who doesn't play at the minute, it's much more likely that their interest will be held by a poker-tainment show, with some witty exchanges and jokes, than one that is a succession of limps and flop leads with 2nd pair.
Top of the Pots hits the spot consistently.
I agree that Chat Box can be a bit hit and miss, and needs some reconsideration.
Poker school is a good concept, but needs better choreography. At the minute, it's a few hands that vaguely fit the chosen subject, with the guys / girls on the sofa working hard to try to make it fit together.
Tikay was really good tonight, I thought. Seems to have rediscovered his sharpness and humour from his Vegas break.
Still think short skirts and cleavage is the way forward.
I'm going to go out on a limb here - but my suggestion would be to drop "Top Of The Pots". There's very little suspense in it other than guessing which street all the money is going to go in on, it features the same players over and over again and adds nothing to the education part of Sky's remit.

it is a bit stale now as there is a huge inevitably about it all
i would also question it being on at 10pm on a thursday when sky sports viewers join, i personally think this would be the point were promoting the site (cash for points, jackpot) should be at its highest as this must be the highest audience of the week ?

there are different legal issues with regards to being on Sky Sports rather than being on 861 so the 'selling' has to be a lot lot softer.
keep the feedback coming guys and we can improve 861 together!
it guess that hand selection is a huge task. to select hands relevant to a particular show topic so much more difficult.
to help, it might require an increase in the number of people selecting hands. alternatively (additionally) if there was a separate section of the forum, with a form with tick boxes, easily accessed and completed, this would help in the task greatly.

thanks for reply
that makes sense then, TOTP still doesnt really seem the right fit for that slot to me but not sure what else could go there without being aware of the rulings
I feel that I am a better than average player now making a decent profit particularly in live poker. When newer players ask me for one piece of advice, I always say watch SKY Poker on a Tuesday, Thursday & Sunday evening.
The shows may not be perfect for everybody but they are educational and will improve your game.
A few thoughts:
1) Overall the current format is better than the old format.
2) The quality of analysts is first class. I thought James Hartigan was excellent over the last month or so and made excellent points with good humour. That is not to knock the other analysts as Tikay, Jen, Stu, Scotty & Redmond are all top class as well.
3) Chat box suffers because of the variation of volume of topics and how interesting they are. Perhaps one idea might be to include performances of SKY players in poker tours and festivals and include phone interviews with them.
4) When the new format first started the Tuesday night show picked up the PRIMO from where they left off on the Sunday in the first hour which tidied things up nicely. Can we go back to this practice.
5) The point made elsewhere about the hand selections is totally valid. The hands selected for "kicker problems" and "squeeze plays" were embarrassing to viewers and presenters. Better imput required here.
6) When covering Mastercash, stick with a table for a full hour because you invariably switch tables just as we are getting used to the table dynamics.
7) I don't mind a bit of chat and a few silly competitions but the main focus has to be the poker.
8) The show on DYMs was interesting but only scratched the surface. This subject needs seperate shows on the opening levels, mid stages, bubble, shoving hands, calling hands, agression v passivity etc.
Generally I enjoy the show but I probably preferred the original show from the 2007/08 days. I liked the idea of some guests playing the main event in the studio then subsequent tournaments/sng's if they busted the main. I also liked Sky following it from start to pretty much finish. I'm not saying Sky should go back to the old days but maybe one show a week could be like old with the tournament being followed? This would be educational as people would learn how to play at different times/situations of a tournament. Maybe numbers for the ME would increase as well if people knew it was a sole focus on the show and they had a high chance of a hand featuring.
I also love the idea of hole cards being covered. I remember this being spoke about back in the early days but never happened. I have only recently got the poker bug back after being a big player in the early days of Sky.
A lot of us loved tuning in to see our hands played and more of this would be great.
I cant remember who suggested it but the idea of showing the DTD was an excellent one. The teams have grown so well and the comunity spirt they are played in is first class.
Of course please dont show my hands as I cringe at them lol
6) When covering Mastercash, stick with a table for a full hour because you invariably switch tables just as we are getting used to the table dynamics.
No - although I understand your point. But giving twice as many players airtime is better imo. Also allows a wider range of buyins to be covered, and we have viewers wanting to watch certain levels but not others.
7) I don't mind a bit of chat and a few silly competitions but the main focus has to be the poker. Posted by Ice_Tiger
1. lOTS MORE HANDS SHOWN FROM ONE PERSON'S PERSPECTIVE WITH ONLY ONE HAND OF THE SIX IN VIEW AND PRESENTERS/EXPERTS/GUESTS HAVING NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OF THEM BUT PUTTING THEIR 2P'S WORTH IN. THEN WE SEE MORE OF THE THINKING BEHIND THE PLAY. THE PROGS LAST NIGHT WERE VERY GOOD FOR THAT REASON AS IT MADE THE VIEWER A PARTICIPANT AND NOT JUST A VIEWER.
2. AS ABOVE BUT FROM SB/BB/ETC POINT OF VIEW.
3. SOME LESSONS FOR INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED PLAYERS AND LABELLED AS SUCH.
In Response to Re: Sky Poker TV Channel : thanks for reply that makes sense then, TOTP still doesnt really seem the right fit for that slot to me but not sure what else could go there without being aware of the rulings Posted by bugaloo
Just to expand upon that Bugs, the Sky Sports simulcast sees a HUGE spike in number of viewers, but during that simulcast, we are absolutely not permitted to "sell", or even "call to action". ("Call to action" is when we might say, for example, "the 10.30pm BH starts in 15 minutes, register now").
So we are a bit constrained as to what we can & cannot say & do. We also need to pay heed to the fact that we have a completely different target audience during the simulcast - viewers who do not, for the most part, play poker. But we'd like them to.......;) So we approach it quite differently.
There is some reverse logic here, of course - during the time when we have our largest audience, we cannot legally promote the product!
Just spent the last ten minutes reading through these comments, all are relevent, some more so than others... the one thing that is obvious is it needs to be one free view to pull more viewers...... why would anyone pay to watch something that does't interest them.... its being able to watch it free that starts to gets them interested!!!

Even if it is for just 1 night a week.
I liked watching the primo on the Sunday, and the Thursday bounty hunter.
I don't see why you cant blend some of the new shows into the previous format so everyone is happy????
Also bring back the guests grinding cash or the main events.
can we get the baby and some bathwater back please?
I usually switch over when this comes on.
