In Response to Re: Ramblings of an 'old' man:
Proper ramble on way. I was reading the other day on another forum about a dealers choice hand at DTD. 2 of the players in the pot were guys who were playing £30 freezeouts with me back in the day. The pot also involved a very prominent forum member on here. they got it all in preflop for £11000! Now one of these players is a very successful businessman, so fair play. The other was just like me a few years ago. Someone just getting into poker. The big difference between us though was he was a gambler. Was he any better than me at the time? probably not. Is he now? undoubtably. How do players get to this stage? Obviously binking something big after satting in is the stress free option. More likely though, rather than turn over an ok profit at small stakes like me and staying there he moved up. I've always treated poker as a game to enjoy and hopefully make a few quid from. However, i do often wonder if i had had enough 'gamble' in me could i have done more? Not sure. Right now i can't even comprehend the idea of getting in £5000 in a cash game but it's all relative i guess. A friend of mine has starting playing recently on here 30p dym's. When i told him i lost a £550 pot a few days ago he said that he wouldn't be able to sleep for a month. Due to a decent year, while it obviously stung a bit, i could take it and i guess it's the same for the guy with 5000 in the middle, different bankrolls. We all have varying levels at which we are prepared to gamble i think. For some on here i see that they've deposited a certain amount and don't wish to redeposit again and stick strictly to their bankrolls. Others reload on a regular basis and 'take a shot'. I don't think there is a right or wrong, we are all just built differently. .

First thread I read on my new toy this morning :)

    Great post.

I think it's quite a common 'problem' for poker players, getting 'stuck'.

Not as common or as worrying as the opposite end of the spectrum.

People taking shots and throwing money around all over trying to make it big and as a result, going broke every other month.

1 for Jared and Barry to tackle in their mental game bible, somewhere inbetween the 2 would be nice!

Nice work on the thread, Happy today, and gl in 2013!

Thanks so much for all your nice comments.

I do realise it's mainly down to the wonderful stories that Tikay has shared with us that the thread has been quite popular. But it's nice to think i may have prompted him a little by reminding him of poker in his first few years.

I sometimes get a bit disheartened when there are no replies, which is over sensitive, and i worry that i have just written total drivel.

I have deleted a couple of posts because they just 'felt wrong' and i'm aware that it may sometimes come across that i'm bragging, i hope not. I have had a good year by my standards and just kind of update on how my night has gone etc.

When, as will happen, i do go on a losing run, don't worry, i will share all the gory details with you.

    Merry Christmas everyone on here

Lol, in all fairness i made what i thought was an educated guess with your name.
How do you arrive at Phil?

I'm Paul by the way, pleased to meet you.

I share my surname with an extremely well known pro and i used to cringe at DTD when i was called to the 50/1 table.

I asked Danny, the cash game manager, if he would call out for 'PJ' when a seat became available in future.
Being a reasonable man he agreed.

5 minutes later at the top of his voice, 'PAUL JACKSON to the 50/1, that's PAUL JACKSON to the 50/1'
    Cheers Danny

Well this has all become a little bit confusing. Long story short, your Sky allias is Jac, so at first I imagined that was your name. Then I recently got tagged by someone on fb, saying they'd beat me in a memorable pot this year. I then added that individual, believing it was you and had a laugh on fb chat, still thinking it was you. Their name happens to be Phillip.

Anyway PAUL. It's a pleasure to meet you. To save a copious amount of confusion my name is indeed Patrick Walsh.

You obviously must have been under the influence!
I don't know if i've ever beaten you in a pot, ever! So it clearly couldn't have been me and besides i'm not sure that even i'm that cocky that i would win a hand and then hunt you down on facebook to remind you of it.

Good luck by the way with cash. You've got the game.
Don't mean to sound condescending but give yourself a stop/loss daily and making priority at the loss of a few hundred quid just isn't worth it.

I wasn't at all! That's why I'm so disheartened that I'm not FB friends with my 'old time' Poker hero.

Completely agree about cash. Priority is ultimately there for me to have something to aim for and increase my volume. If it becomes -EV (as the kids say), I'm more than happy to finish my month short of Priority.

I trust you had a nice Christmas PAUL, and I wish you a pleasent New Year.

    I really appreciate that.

I went to watch the Mighty Rams yesterday at Burnley. We were not particulary "Mighty" though and i seem to remember just one shot all afternoon. It was that, or the mother-in-laws though and so, every cloud.

Liked the ground. Proper old ground and the setting was just what i imagined it would be. Old mill on the right as you come of the motorway. I've never really been to that part of the Country before so was quite interested to see it.

Always like the away games and prefer to go to the old stadiums as they have just so much more character.
Pride Park is a great stadium but give me the Baseball Ground any day. Always amused to think that ancient ground in the middle of Normanton  hosted Real Madrid and Juventus with 40000 packed inside.

What are your favourite grounds? I'll give you a few of mine.

I went to the Nou Camp a couple of years ago on the tour and would love to return for an actual game, something i hope to do next year.
In this Country i would have to say Old Trafford was very impressive but that's without going to Anfield, Goodison, St James Park (not sports direct stadium) and a few others.

Plainmoor was possibly my favourite though.
Family holiday in the 80's and we arrived in Torquay at about 14.00. Dad suggested that i went with him to see the game, Mum was delighted!
Torquay won 6-1 with a hatrick from Paul Dobson. On the terrace it was great as just like a parks game we just moved up and down the touchline to whichever end Torquay were attacking.

Barnsley was good. Went there around 1992 when Derby had suddenly become the Man City of the 2nd division with a local businessman taking over and investing around 12 million.
Great ground at the very bottom of a huge hill with 99% terracing, pity it's changed now. £6 return on the train and £7 the ticket. A little cheaper than it would be today.

Went to Wolves earlier this season and thought they had improved the ground really well. Elland Road was much smaller than i expected bar one enourmas stand which reminded me a little of how Filbert Street used to be.

Be interested to hear of other grounds that might be worth a visit?

    Hi,

Always keep upto date with this thread, it's brilliant.

The Nou camp full is an unbelieveable sight, although didn't see barca there saw the '99 European cup final man utd v Bayern munich . What a game. Almost missed the 2nd goal celebrating the first one soo much. Bad hangover following day.

As you probably can tell, huge utd fan so would have to say old Trafford takes some beating. Anfield is a great stadium def worth the visit. Carrow road is well set out, compact and great atmosphere, especially when delia is giving it what for lol..Villa park, although prob not this year..
The county ground Swindon, is another nice ground, have had some great experiences there.

And not forgetting truro city in cornwall, saw a preseason friendly there when I was around 15, so some yrs ago..

Went to watch Fleetwood play end of last season whilst on holiday there. They play some great football, have a huge fan base and with the ground being small, you get an awesome atmosphere...

Hope that gives you some good ideas of grounds to visit..

Excellent! Exactly what i was after.
Went to Old Trafford for league cup semi. sigh
Surely good hangover after 99 cup final?
Port Vale was another good one.
Went with my Grandad and he got on famously with the landlord of the pub we went into.
Only later did i read it was the number one pub to avoid for away fans.
That night the "Cunning Runts" were playing.
    It was a delightful place.

    Binkage!!!

Went to see Reacher tonight at cinema.
Was sceptical as have read all the books and Tom Cruise would be about the last person i would pick to play the role.
However, admittedly it was pretty good and i hope they continue it.

I then decided with wife tired and no work tomorrow to have a little go at texas holdem in my local casino.

Sat with £200 and spent the first hour, bet /folding £100 of it away.
Topped up and raised AJ utg, 2 callers, flop KQ10.
Hmm, i like it. Lead 10 and tilted chap who is sadly without a fold button reraises to 25.
I might flat this normally but in this instance "ALL IN" seems the correct move.
Snap call with K5, i double up.

Very next hand I raise 4 utg with 67 diamonds.
Bankroll Supply player on button raises to 12 and says he doesn't realise i had raised, thought i had straddled.
SB and BB call. I decide to peel.

    Flop 643 2 diamonds.
Checks to me and i lead 18.
    Bankroll reraises to 50.
I think he's good enough to fold pretty much any over pair and i have flopped huge, i shove for around 270.
He announces he is not in the habit of folding sets and calls with 33.
I am a favourite but to be honest was never expecting to be called. I now have to hit. ( edit, i'm 38% )
Turn 5, phew!! just fade river please, i do and 630 approx is passed to me. Running reasonably well at  present!

Dribbled away 150 after that , couple of bad run outs, but can hardly complain.

Enjoying live poker at the moment!

    A kind of review.

I started playing on SKY last December and so had a full year now.
Have really enjoyed it and after years of playing on multiple sites this is now the only place I place online.
A big reason for that is the Dym's on here but mainly I have really enjoyed the forum as well.
Going back a long time I used to play on Crypto (loved crypto) as I think they were the first platform to introduce double or nothing games. Crypto folded and then I flitted around many sites.

I grinded the Dym's pretty hard on here for the first 7/8 months of the year and made a decent profit at them which I'm really pleased with.

For the last few months I've really got the "live " bug back again and so have put in far less volume online.
I have played at DTD for the last few years and probably was a small loser there on the odd outing in the early part of the year.
Since then I've started playing at a casino and to be honest the standard is a lot lower.
This has enabled me to have some nice cashes in comps and at cash.

Would really recommend playing live to anyone on here who is beating any of the stakes.
Sometimes read of people being nervous about playing live or thinking it will be tough.
I think times have changed dramatically and with proper dealer dealt competitions / cash games I think anyone would find it enjoyable rather than intimidating.
In the past it was different and in all honesty pretty dodgy at times but fortunately those days are gone.

Achievement of the year was last night.
I tried but failed miserably on Friday, but last night went to casinio and stayed entirely sober!
On Friday after a few (many) pints i'd called a raise on button thinking about how i could outplay my opponent on the flop ( drunken stupidity ). Flop came K88 and he led out. I thought great this is a chance to raise and win pot. I raise and he instantly clicks it back. Sigh! i announce pass and just have a quick look at my cards before mucking. Oh lovely, i have Ace 8! Fool!
    Happy New Year

    hi Paul,
agree with you about playing live mate,as you already know.it's just the best, especially the home games with your best mates,as mine was.
even though i was a losing player(£600 in total) i would swap back to it tomorrow.
the banter was non stop all night and great fun.
even the night i lost over £200 on my birthday was enjoyable, well for them anyway.  lol

always enjoy the challenge of playing against you mate on the virtual felt, and our little bit of banter we have here too.
hope 2013 will be good for you both on and off the tables whether live or here at Sky.
    best wishes buddy.
i'm having a drink or 3 tonight which i know i'll regret tomorrow as my drinking days are long gone...
i remember the nights when i used to go to the pub with my best friend, have about 6/8 pints play pool all night and still have change from a fiver.  hey,the good old days!!!

    chat soon mate,
    :)

First post on here of the year and it's going to be a proper moaning ramble!

I can't win at the moment at DYM'S and i'm not happy!

My roi is now getting dangerously close to being as low as Walsh's.
Sky is obviously rigged and and there is collussion in all the games i play.

Actually, none of the above two lines is true. (apart from the Patwalshh bit)
It's just a number of different things kicking in that means i'm not getting the returns i want.
Firstly, i'm not playing very well in these games. I have been playing live a lot recently and this has transferred into my play in DYM'S subconsciously.
Second is variance. I have ran fantastically well over the last few months. So i think i should accept that i will have days when i lose flips on a regular basis. Happens to everyone.
Third is volume. I'm not simply not putting enough in
There have been so me confusing calls made against me. Well, so what? This happens normally and when i win with AK V K4 i don't give it a second thought. Yet when we lose with these hands, we dwell on them for ages afterwards.

Poker is such a strange game sometimes.
We win and all thoughts are turned to the day fast approaching when we go "pro".
We lose and we don't know how we have ever won a pot in our lives. We are the worst, why are we wasting our time with this stupid game?

    I LOVE POKER

    Thanks a lot Scouse.
When you mentioned it before I didn't know what it was to be honest, hence what probably looked like a strange reply.
Only noticed a couple of days ago the thread at the top of the page.
Looking forward to sitting down with Offshoot etc and maybe learning a few things without it costing me a few hundred pounds for the lesson!
