Due to family commitments I played very little poker. For the fourth day in a row I was rubbish at holding when all-in and ahead and finished a little down from a small batch of STTs.
It’s still not happening for me in the micro MTT’s at the moment. I’m picking up plenty of small pots without any difficulty only to run terribly when it comes to the crucial big all-ins. Runs like this are standard in tournaments, I’ll just keep plugging away and trying to play my best until the variance turns around. I’m saving up the run-good for a future heater.
At least I cashed in something. My min-cash in a £3.30 freeze-out was my first in-the-money finish since Wednesday. In the end I was coolered with pair<pair aipf during 3-handed play with effective stacks under 20BB.
Fun hand from a Bounty Hunter today. Given the action on previous streets we can eliminate QQ-AA from the villains range and it looks very likely he has a jack. I shove over 2x pot on the river for maximum value knowing that a jack will be calling. I see no point betting less; he may smell a rat and flat-call a smaller bet rather than re-raising me all-in. Of course quads 5s was possibility, albeit highly unlikely. in which we can laugh off a harsh cooler.

The above was a rare highlight. The hand below was my exit from another tournament and is standard fare for me at the moment. I was calling here with a very solid read that the villain’s 3-bet shove is likely to be a middle pair.

Phew; a long overdue cash in a Bounty Hunter and my first winning day since Wednesday last week.
Most of the profit came thanks to a deep run in the 10-45AM £3.30. For the first time in a while I ran well when all-in including a lucky double with AT>AJ aipf two from the money and winning two 40/60s as the underdog at the final table. I busted in third place after three hours of play in an unavoidable cooler; my rivered nut-flush losing to a turned full-house. I knew I didn’t have the nuts on a paired board but with effective stacks only ~20BB deep my hand was far too strong to even consider folding in a blind v blind pot.
Much like London buses another cash also came in the very next tournament with another third in a small £2.30 Bounty Hunter. On the bubble I benefited from a major suck-out; with only 9BB behind my K3o was a standard shove when it folded to me on the SB. I somehow got there against the BB’s pocket KK!
Below is the hand from this morning’s Bounty Hunter that set me off on the deep run. I’d like to point out a couple of decisions in this hand that might help beginners or improving players.
Firstly I see little point in raising over the limpers pre-flop. With several passive calling stations at the table if I do the most likely thing is that at least two of them will call my raise, I’ll then miss the flop and have difficulty playing my pocket pair OOP with overcards on the board. Seeing a flop for free and taking it from there offers by far the best risk/reward ratio.
Second it’s worth taking a good look at the flop action. When Player A puts out a small bet and player B calls I’m pretty sure they both have either a piece of the flop or a draw, so I put in a smallish check-raise to build the pot with my set while being careful not to make my bet so big that either of them fold. Any king and any flush draw are among holdings that I expect to call my raise. Slow-playing now by just calling the minimum bet is a common mistake. The pot won’t get very big and flush-draws get the chance to improve at minimum cost. Putting in a much bigger check/raise would also be an error, the last thing we want here is to make our opponents fold.
When player B unexpectedly shoves over my check-raise I’m delighted. We’re not worried he holds pocket KK as his pre-flop limp on the button means we can eliminate it from his range with 99% certainty. All we have to think about now is winning as many chips as possible out from Player A. The last thing I should do is put in a raise that makes Player A fold. You see light calls made by opponents chasing bounties in these games, so I don’t think player A will fold any king or flush draw if I merely call, in fact he may now think that I only have either a flush draw or a weak made hand. Flat-calling the shove and hoping Player A also calls is our best bet. When he does he’s now committed to the pot and my plan is to shove on any turn. I hate the ace because it might scare Player A into a reluctantly folding a king, however I go through with my plan and put the rest of my stack in. Player A calls even though he'd been drawing almost dead on the flop, completely dead on the turn, and I win the maximum possible.
Player B didn't really do much wrong, he was just unlucky to run into a bigger set. Player A played his cards badly in my opinion. The presence of many players in the field making unwise decisions like this are why these low-stakes MTTs are easily beatable.

No joy for me in the micro Bounty Hunters today. The bingo callers were having their day in sun. That’s fine by me, I profit from these guys in the long run, it’s important that they get lucky often enough to keep them in the games.
In HU STTs I fared better to claw a little back. I'm finding it harder to motivate myself for the HU STTs now because they only offer the opportunity of small profits. They were great when I need to grind up my balance using low variance games, but now I much prefer playing for the larger prizes up for grabs in micro MTTs.
For now my 40 buy-in rule is keeping me out the £5.75 Bounty Hunters that run all day. I’m itching to get into them as soon as possible, however I’ll be waiting until my balance reaches the reuired £230 no matter how long it takes. Discipline and patience FTW!
A bizarre river call in a HU match. It’s either a misclick, or he thinks there’s a reasonable chance I'm bluffing with the same hand or worse.

Nice one Gary. Great achievement already to have virtually £200 from 0p. That takes a lot of skill and a lot of discipline! Keep it up! Posted by Lambert180
Cheers Paul, thanks for that. Good luck to you for tomorrow.
I only played two games today. Results were pleasing with a win in a HU match and second in a small Bounty Hunter.
In the tournament I was only deprived a win by the harsh run-out in the hand below. It was somewhat unfortunate because I felt I was at the top of my game throughout and always the best player at my tables. I prefer to be performance-orientated rather than results-orientated, there’s nothing more I could have done so I’m totally cool with the outcome.

Up-to-date graph of daily closing balances so far;
I donked myself out of a £3.30 freezeout when I put a maniac to the test with my pocket 77 at a bad time and couldn't improve against his over-pair.
In a £2.30 Bounty Hunter I bubbled after losing the big all-in with AK<KQ aipf.
In a £2.20 Deepstack I was an early casualty. Two hands did for me in that one; my KQ coming second best to KT after a KQT flop, then when my 3-bet with pocket QQ was flatted by KQo, the JT9 flop condemned me.
I made a couple of deep runs today, it was nice to turn a profit and get back over £200, though results were somewhat disappointing all things considered.
In a £250 guaranteed £2.30 Bounty Hunter I came close to a decent score but got donked out at the sharp end by the runaway chipleader, a calling station who was hitting everything and busting players for fun. He called my turn shove for a huge pot with only a jack-high flush draw and one card to come. He got there of course to beat my made straight. I was 2nd/9 from 147 at the time with several <10BB short stacks on life-support. I was begging for the call so I can’t whinge the one in five times I don’t fade the draw. It was a pretty brutal beat but it’s the nature of tournament poker.
Earlier I got heads-up in a smaller £2.30 BH, though needing to overcome a big chip deficit. HU play was over almost before it started. My open-shove from the button with a suited king was called by Q4o, another call I’m happy to take, but it was a quick kill; the flop came down Q44.
I seem to be stuck on a plateau at the moment, I’ve hovering around the £200 mark for a couple of weeks now. Hopefully I’ll push on soon.
Fun float in the £250 guaranteed. I had a feeling my opponent had probably missed this flop and decided to make play for the pot. Seeing flops with small pairs is far more profitable if you have ability to out-play your opponents post-flop and can still win pots without a set.
Great to see you over £200 again Gary, soon be at £500 I'm sure. Good luck Posted by Boxster
Cheers David, thanks for your support.
I'm not even thinking about £500 yet. That seems daunting, miles away. My approach is to focus on a smaller step and ignore what I need to do beyond that. For a couple of weeks now I've set my sights on breaching £230, the point at which my 40-buy-in rule will permit me to buy into £5.75s. Not far to go now.
My fortunes were mixed in the morning £3.30 Bounty Hunters today. In the 9-45 I was going great until busted with QQ<AJ aipf against a fellow top-five stack for a pot worth the chiplead in the mid-stages.
Pocket QQ made amends early in the 10-45 when it gave me a very lucky treble-up against two players both holding KK. My 2-outer hit on the river of course. The hand has been posted in the Brags, Beats and Variance section of this forum.
The flying start didn’t last long and my big stack dwindled, mainly because I found myself getting totally owned by Young_Gun after he moved to my table. At one point I found myself down to only 11BB. I shoved my way back into contention, getting folds when I was light, doubling a couple of times when I had the goods. Soon after the bubble burst I finally got the better of Young_Gun, busting him in a standard flip. I made it to final table after but things didn’t go my way once there and I busted in fifth place.
Later I played some HU STTs managing 2 wins from 3. Despite having a feeling that it was a weekend of near misses I’m very happy to find myself posting a new highest balance.
Nice hand! Always nice to get paid when you get quads!
As I've said to you though, I'm using this thread to try and build my bank roll up to £1000 instead of keeping it at a maximum of £100. I've always took my winnings out above that so I have spending money and also to stop me doing stupid things if I'm in a tilting mood which everyone gets every now and then. But I have to say thanks as your bank roll discipline is exemplary and I'm following those same rules. Im about on par with you at the mo but of corse I didn't start from nothing!

I'm very pleased to hear you're still doing well Craig, very well played, keep up the good work. If I can do it anybody can do it.
Knowing that this diary sets an example to others that helps improve their results means more to me than the profit made.
Another couple of tournament near misses today with third place finishes in a £3.30 freezeout and a £2.30 Bounty Hunter. In the freezeout I was coolered 99<JJ aipf blind v blind, unavoidable with stacks shallow and an aggresive dynamic. In the Bounty Hunter my button open-shove with pocket TT was called by A6, the flop came down A6A, what more can you do lol?
I roughly broke even in HU STTs. It’s funny how it often goes in those; I got the cards to beat the best player I faced in comfort, whereas the worst opponent managed to come back and beat me after surviving three all-ins for his tournament life as an underdog.
A small profit on the day, another highest balance, £50 profit over the last 7 days.........I’ll take it!
No MTT success today. My best chance of a decent score came in the 10-45 BH. I recovered from only 520 chips early-on to well above average with the bubble looming but couldn’t recover after losing two thirds of my stack in my first big flip with AK<66 aipf for a 40BB pot. My exit in 16/72 came soon after with QJ<AK aipf.
In the afternoon there was a lot more bingo play at the tables than usual for a weekday, surprisingly the worst of it I saw was in a deep stack. I tightened-up and got my chips in in good spots but I couldn’t find a way through the minefield.
I think I finished slightly up in HU STTs today. I’m thinking of throwing in a batch of 100x £3.15 hypers at some point over the next few days. It’ll be something different and will ensure I qualify for a C4P payment (I’m well behind schedule to get there at the moment). If I decide to go for it I’ll announce it here before I start and happily take on all-comers.
First one was brutal to lose £3.30 with no cash or any Bounties. Couldnt have played it any differently IMO. When people just camble with low Pocet Pairs nolt you can do execpt hope to hit!

With hindsight maybe I shouldn't have taken the flip, I probably could have outplayed this guy by playing smaller pots. Mind you, had it gone my way I'd have taken his bounty and been near the top of the field with the bubble looming, I love playing bubbles when I have a big stack. Oh well, on to the next one. I hope you managed a deep run, you were well placed when I busted.
There was a very near miss in my first tournament today, a second place finish in the 9-45 Bounty Hunter. In the first hand I played like a donk and needlessly gave away 35% of my stack, however after the embarrassing start things went much better. I picked up plenty of cards to work with and gradually chipped-up finding myself near the top of the field with several head-prizes come the bubble.
There was a brief panic after two hours of play when my broadband connection went down, however iPhone tethering came to the rescue and after missing a few hands I was able to continue using the phones 3G connection. With 9 players left a river bink in a huge 3-way aipf pot when my AK eliminated opponents holding pocket 99 and A5 gave me the chiplead, a lead I was able to maintain more-or-less all the way to heads-up play. Once there I came within one card of winning the tournament in a standard race, my 33<QJ (10BB effective stacks) when a jack hit on the river. Soon after I was left on fumes; my raise with AKs on the BB over an open-limp was flatted, I flopped top pair/top kicker on the KQ8r board, however when stacks went in my opponent flipped pocket 88. An unavoidable cooler for me when we were only 20BB deep before the blinds were posted. I was disappointed not to take the victory however the £39.11 return for my £3.30 buy-in, my second biggest bink of this challenge so far, is a sweet consolation.
For the first time since this began I’m now rolled to buy into £5.75 games in accordance with my 40 buy-in rule, I’ll start playing them soon.
Bink! Fun river card for me with 2 tables left in the £3.30. Lea116311 can consider herself somewhat unlucky not to hold with the third player in the pot holding one of my outs.

Is your'e 'dinner in the dog' after that hand Gary? You are also rolled now to play the DTD on Monday nights....... Keep it going mate. Posted by MAXALLY
Haha, if we had a dog it probably would be, you should have seen the death stare I got. No evening pokers for me unfortunately, work hours mean I'll be sticking to daytime stuff. Cheers Al.
I had a bit of a mare today. I’m happy with my play, it’s just that I ran about as badly as is possible. In all three MTTs I busted after losing all-in situations with 70%+ equity.
My first £5.75 Bounty Hunter of this challenge couldn’t have gone worse. After a decent start I lost over half of my stack to a chaser who completed his gutshot on the river. I rebuilt to average only to then go out in sick fashion. First my AK lost to A5o aipf for a head-prize. Two hands later I called an open shove with my pocket AA. I was up against the mighty J2o……….but I still managed to lose! I was too tilted to continue playing after that hand and called it a day.
My stay in £5.75s might be very brief. In accordance with my 40 buy-in rule I won’t play them while my balance is a penny less than £230. Mind you, every cloud has a silver lining; the standard of opponents I faced in the £5.75 today was no different to those I see at £2.30 and £3.30. If anything it was worse. That’s an encouraging sign for future games.

It wasn’t my day with no joy from 3 MTTs.

I'm not even thinking about £500 yet. That seems daunting, miles away. My approach is to focus on a smaller step and ignore what I need to do beyond that.

Two steps forward, one step back.
