No luck for me in the morning £3.30s today. I ran deep in the 9-45AM but fell a few spots from the money when I found a good ‘any two cards will do’ spot to open-jam my last 11BB. My 35s hit the flop but I lost out to AJo when it was counterfeited by two pairs on the board.

In a lunchtime £3.30 Freezeout I fared better with a second place finish. I was disappointed not to win as I felt I was the best player in the game, however the final result was out of my hands,  I was taken out by a bad beat with 88<A2s aipf for 70% of the chips in play.

A case of ‘what might have been’ at the final table of the £3.30 Freezeout. Although I would have won a huge pot in spectacular fashion here my decision to fold pre-flop remains correct. I was far too shallow to set-mine and would be wasting way too much of my precious stack the 7/8 times I see a flop and miss my set. It’s important when playing poker that you don’t let situations like this cloud your decision making process during future hands. Results orientated thinking is always unwise. A correct fold remains a correct fold regardless of whether you would have got lucky and won the pot on any one individual occasion or not.

Excellent work Gary, but im surprised you folded 33. Thats like AA to you isnt it?  Only joking, as you say, its correct to fold in those situations. When someone has 36 and the flop comes 245 they always bemoan the fact 'they would have won' and not the fact that 63 is junk!

The only poker tournaments I had time for today were the two morning £3.30 Bounty Hunters. I ran well to make the final table of both, though they were ultimately destined to be near-misses.

In the 9-45 after flipping well to get there I scored a lucky double on the stone-cold bubble; I opened the betting with AT and the big-blind defended with T5o. That’s great news for me most of the time, however on this occasion the flop was T52r. After all the chips went in I was saved by an ace on the river. Eventually I was busted during 3-handed play by talented MTTer SUPERSNEDD, the only player in the game who’d been running hotter than me. When getting short I ran my AT into his AK blind vs blind, a cooler for me with effective stacks below 20BB.

After embarrassingly donking off most of my stack in the 10-45 I found myself down to only 6BB at one stage. However I managed to flip and shove my back into contention and was in the top two by the bubble. My good fortune dried up soon after when I ran flopped top pair with a good kicker into a flopped set against the same player twice an orbit apart to find myself adrift in 8/8. However it wasn’t all over quite yet, I shoved myself back into it and was in the lead with five left. The wheels finally came off for good courtesy of two coolers. I squeeze/shoved AJ from the button over a weak limp and ran into KK in the blinds. A couple of orbits later I jammed my A9s from the cut-off into pocket AA on the BB and was out in fifth. No complaints, I’d had a good run to get that far.

I particularly enjoyed the tournaments today. They were both played in good spirit, I shared friendly tables with many regs. Poker being played as it should be. It always more fun when you flip well too! I’d like to give fellow forum member Easyfix a mention. I busted him from both tournaments due to his total inability to win all-ins against me. The deck didn’t give him chance today, though I’m sure he’ll get his own back sooner or later.

Cheers Ben. I've been on a bit of a purple patch over the last week. Now I'm playing almost exclusively MTTs I expect to be reporting far more losing days than winning days. They'll undoubtedly come, as will the downswings, though for for the time being I intend to make the most of the run-good while it lasts.

It's funny how your perspective changes. Making £29 profit today was certainly pleasing, though no big deal. Whereas if I look back to the start of this challenge it took me 5 hard weeks to win the first £29. Back then even a £1 HU STT win felt huge.

In Response to Re: 1,000 Poker Points ----- /> £1,000 Can it be done? Latest balance £325.75 : Hi Smiley, thanks very much. I'm unable to give full advice because I only ever play tournament poker and never visit the cash tables. It depends what your best game is really. Personally I'd play standard speed £1.05 HU STTs and try to run it up there. Many opponents in those are pretty weak, any solid player stands a great chance of building the bankroll as long as a downswing can be avoided. Many would recommend DYMs. I'm not a big fan myself; the 15% rake at the the £1.00 level is hard to beat and I'm not too keen on a game in which the correct strategy is to fold most of the time. You're much more likely to profit from real money games than Freerolls in my opinion. Though saying that you've nothing to lose; you might as well use your 60 points to enter a couple and see if you get lucky, after-all you can't do anything else with them. Whatever you do don't waste any of your precious cash balance paying for rebuys and add-ons in a Freeroll, I didn't at any stage of this challenge. Good luck to you.

    Cheers for the advice Gary,

I would have got back to this post sooner, but had a lot on.

i'm going to try some HU poker. i normally go for 60p/£1.15 DYM's but like you say, i'm struggling to make the balance grow with the rake and downswings. i had been playing some cash tables, but feel as though my bankroll is still a bit small for even the 2p/4p tables. So heads up here i come!

Keep up the good work and thanks again.

No joy today, I entered three Bounty Hunter tournaments but bricked them all. In the first I enjoyed a bright start with an early bounty but lost it all a bit later when two flips didn’t go my way.

In the second game I busted in the very first hand with pocket kings. The flop was 862, all diamonds. I held the king of diamonds so would never consider folding against an unknown opponent. The villain in the hand held 88 and his set held up (see below).

Things looked promising for a while in the third game. But I went from above average to out in the space of two consecutive mid-stages hands. First my raise with JT was called by a short stack with A4, I was never folding on the J44 flop. Then my AQs clashed with a callers JT on an AKQ flop for a harsh cooler. At least I had a couple of head prizes under my belt as a consolation.

I’m expecting my volume to be low for the next month or so. DIY jobs around the house will be taking priority over poker for a while. Also I have several family events and a week off work lined up. When I’m off work I like to make the most of it, I often take a break from poker while I get out and about on my travels.

This is how I busted a Bounty Hunter tournament in the first hand. I’m never folding in this spot and I like to play my over pair and flush draw aggressively, my bet sizes are carefully calculated to set up the river shove. I know a good part of the villains range (sets and flopped flushes) beats me, however I’m also considering that you also see unknown opponents getting to the river with many holdings I’m beating in these games. I wouldn’t have been surprised to if he/she held any of these; a pair 99 to JJ (with or without a diamond), AdKx, AQ with a diamond (sometimes without), Ad with any other card, sometimes even just a random hand with a single diamond lower than a king. On this occasion I say well played and good luck to the villain. It would have been interesting to see if he/she could have got away from their set had the fourth diamond hit.

I was home from work in time for the two £3.30 Bounty Hunters today. In the 10-45 I busted in the mid-stages when I found a good squeeze/shove spot on the button with 18BB and AJs over two weak limps. Unfortunately for me the SB woke up with pocket kings which held-up.

In the 9-45 I enjoyed a deeper run. Solid ABC tournament poker was enough to take me to the sharp end. As usual I didn’t shy away from a big confrontation on the bubble; I won a big one here with TT>AJ aipf to put myself in second place as we went into the money. Not long after that after losing a couple of all-ins my back was against the wall in 8/8. However I shoved myself back into contention and was briefly chipleader for a while after winning another race with AQs>TT aipf once I eventually found a caller.

At the final table I was one more flip away from a substantial chip lead with five left, however this time it didn’t go my way. I shoved pocket 88 over the chipleaders button min-raise and lost the race against his AK to exit in fifth place. I play MTTs to win and am therefore very happy to take my chances in such a spot. If his hole-cards were somehow known to me in advance my stack is still going in the middle. He who dares wins (in the long run!).

After three hours of decorating work I returned to the tables. I was somewhat tired, but jumped in the first game going which was a £2.30 Bounty Hunter. I was donked out by a calling station who caught a 3-outer with one card to come.

My exit hand at the £3.30 final table. I consider my pocket pair to be well ahead of the buttons opening range. Most of the time I'll pick-up the 7K in the middle and add over 20% to my stack without a showdown. However I'm also fully prepared to race against overcards for my tournament life if necessary. In the unlikely event my opponent or the big blind has a bigger pair than me it’s just a cooler, though even then there’s a chance I might suck-out. I have a very aggressive image at this table, so it’s also possible I might get looked up by a smaller pair, maybe even A8s. If I win the flip I’m chipleader and stand a great chance of victory, I’m playing for win here so this was an easy shove.

The only game I could enter today was £5.75 Speed Bounty Hunter. I usually avoid these speed games as skill edges are blunted, however it was all I had time for on a busy day.

I enjoyed a great start with four early head-prizes and spent much of the tournament as chipleader. My good fortune began to run out when we entered the shallow push/fold zone. I lost my lead when I ran AK into AA, then a series of all-ins on the bubble (4 left, 3 paid) worked against me, including my harsh exit as bubble boy with AK<AQ aipf.

I’m beginning to get a worrying sense of deja-vu here. During my £51 to £1,051 challenge in 2012 the £5.75 Bounty Hunters were my Achilles heel throughout. I just couldn’t win one no matter how hard I tried, making frequent deep runs only to run bad every time at the sharp end. I made over 30 final tables without getting a single first place, only eventually taking one down on the very last day. I hope I’m not going to see a similar pattern this year.

Tried my luck in four tournaments today, but found nothing was going my way, I probably won no more than half a dozen small pots across the entire session. The biggest pocket pair I saw was TT, which was an exit hand when I ran it into KK. Twice I flopped a made straight, each time losing a big pot to a flush draw that got there.

Apart from that I spent most of the time picking up junk cards and missing flops. Each time I went all-in I lost, including being busted by a caller with 83s when I open jammed 16BB with my strong ace in a Bounty Hunter.

This afternoon I entered two Bounty Hunters. I got second place in a small £2.30 when I lost the big HU flip. In a £5.75 I enjoyed a deep run. It looked quite promising for a while during a spell as clear chip leader in the mid-stages. However my £5.75 BH curse kicked-in again at the sharp end. I lost a series of big all-ins before and after the bubble to crash ‘n burn including AK<9T aipf, then QQ<JJ aipf for a pot worth a big head-prize and the chiplead with 9 left. Soon after I crashed out with only a min-cash to show for my efforts.

In the evening I fired up three tables, I ran reasonably deep in all three but to no avail. First exit was in a £2.20 Deepstack, after two hours of play I 3-bet jammed 99 from the SB into an opener with TT on the button. Soon after that I was out of the Mini too. Not long after taking a beat when my AK failed to hold-up against A9 on an ace-high flop I check/shoved my over cards and open-ended straight draw when holding AQ on a 9TJ flop. My opponent held pocket AA, so my overcards were no good, I needed the straight but didn’t get there.

My last tournament was the £500 guaranteed Bounty Hunter. I was playing well and comfortably placed in the top ten when I took another harsh beat to bust with 68 left from 248. Once again it was for a decent head-prize and the chip lead, but I found myself unable to fade a three-outer with two to come.

I’ll be taking a day off poker tomorrow, back on Monday. Good luck all.

It's prob no comfort but i'm havin the same sort of luck at the mo, it's funny when your
luck just aint in. You watch people getting it in with AQ A10 EVEN A9 and holding.
I go in with AQs against 55 and out i go..lol but it will change soon. Keep it going Gary.

Thanks. While I won't deny these beats are frustrating I'm not really worried about it. As long as I can consistantly make the late stages in a decent proportion of my tournaments the wins will follow sooner or later. The luck will even out over time, as it always does. I'm sure if I looked back I'd see I've won with AK over AT and QQ over JJ plenty of times in crucial late spots then quickly forgotten about it.

I'd be much more concerned if I kept busting due to bad decisions; ie getting my stack in when behind.

    Good luck to you too.

    Day 144

    Day 145

    Closing Balance £375.00

    Up £18.10 today

First up was two morning £3.30 Bounty Hunters. I went deep in the 9-45 but lost two late-stages flips to bust in 19/91. Had I won either race I’d have been a top 5 stack at the sharp end, so I have absolutely no regrets about taking those spots.

In the 10-45 I flipped better at the sharp end winning two out of three around the bubble. I also won with QJ on the button  beating AK in the blinds for a double when I squeeze/shoved over a weak limp a few spots before the money. Just after the bubble burst I got unlucky and lost a huge aipf pot with QQ<66 aipf and looked destined for a min-cash when left in 12/12 with only 6BB. However I picked up some cards and shoved my way back into contention. My demise came on the final table bubble when I ran AJs my on the BB into pocket AA cunningly limped from the SB to trap, a disappointing end albeit an unavoidable cooler with all stacks shallow.

After a trip out at lunchtime I jumped in the first game to run after I returned home which was a small £2.30 Bounty Hunter. I feel I was the best player in the game but I had to make do with second place after a cruel beat when my AJ failed to hold aipf against A8 during heads-up play leaving me on fumes.

Tough spot with pocket jacks on the bubble of the £2.30 Bounty Hunter. The guy who open shoves here is a frequent limper who almost never raises pre-flop, this shove is totally out of character. I’d be very surprised if he plays AA or KK this way. I think his range is only strong hands that he doesn’t want to see a flop with. I feel AK is very likely, perhaps pairs TT to QQ too. At a tough table I may consider calling, however I prefer to take the low variance option and make a reluctant fold here. I feel I have enough of an edge over my opponents that gambling is unnecessary and that my best chance of victory lies in trying to outplay them in less risky spots.

    Closing Balance £378.08

    Up £3.08 today

I got home from work just in time to enter the two £3.30 morning Bounty Hunters. In each I ran deep but came away with very little to show for it. I min-cashed in the 9-45 soon after losing 90% of my stack in a large ‘do or die’ pot on the stone-cold bubble with KQs<ATo aipf. In the 10-45 I exited close to the bubble when my pocket QQ was unable to hold-up against a player who employed an open-limp/call/call/call/call strategy with KJs from UTG to successfully make a flush.

After a couple of hours getting other stuff done I was planning to enter a couple of afternoon MTTs. though when it came down to it I was too tired and couldn’t be bothered. However, I did jump into a couple of HU STTs instead with one goal in mind; to set a new highest balance. I successfully got there to finish the day on happy note.

    Day 146

    Closing Balance £367.36

    Down £10.72 today

An early finish at work ensured I was home in time for the two morning £3.30 Bounty Hunters, this being the last chance I’ll get to enter them for several days. In the 9-45 I am happy with my play. I made good decisions but got unlucky in a couple of big all-in spots. I busted close to the money in the 10-45. After making an incorrect call for a huge pot I was coolered with my last 13BB, running my AQs into AK.

    In the afternoon I busted a £2.30 when I lost a flip AKs<99.

I was flying in a standard speed £5.75 until an unwelcome dose of run-bad kicked in. First I lost a huge pot to a guy holding 45 who open-limped UTG, called my raise to 5x from the BB, called my big c-bet on a Q63r flop to get there and crack my pocket AA. My exit came a few orbits later when I jammed 18BB with A9 on the BB over the SB’s open-limp. The SB made a bewildering call with the mighty 26. The 8TJ flop looked pretty good for me but I was out when a 2 hit on the river.

Next I tried my luck in a Speed £5.75. Once again I seem to be jinxed at that buy-in. I went from a top 3 stack with 10 left to bust after losing with A7s<89o aipf then KJ<QJ aipf, each for a large pot and a head-prize. I’m getting pretty sick of these £5.75s again. Just like last year I can’t make the big holds when it really matters and they’re damaging my progress. It’ll be a big relief when I get the £5.75 BH monkey off my back.

    keep going Gary mate
i'm sure the next big cash will be coming very soon.
I know exactly how you feel about losing at a certain level mate,as I had similar problems last year trying to beat the £5 dym's. lol
it really does become a mental barrier in the end, doesn't it.
keep making good decisions as you do,and you'll get there,i'm certain.

Because I’m busy with other stuff my poker volume is even lower than usual at the moment, and it’s going to stay that way the next couple of weeks.

All I had time for today was a £5.75 Bounty Hunter. I’m happy I played well but I didn’t get the cards to work with at the sharp end, twice getting coolered by short stacks with AJs<AKs and 77<JJ both aipf. Another deepish run, I'm making them consistantly still. I feel I just need to marry one one with some late stages luck and a bink will follow.
