How long after you started playing did you first win an MTT?

Details.... (how much did you win, buy in etc...).

And how did it feel when you won it?
  • edited March 2011
Think my little bro Wacko90 is THE perfect person to have as the first ITW, well done Tikay on choosing him.

I think quite a few people were surprised when they first found out how old he is and the seriously short amount of time he's actually been playing poker seriously. Results don't lie though and he's been extremely sucessful since moving to university (shows the amount of time he actually spends on his course I feel ;)).

Good luck on trying to answer all these questions Dave ;)

+1 to pics of the missus. How serious are you about playing cash poker? Why do you always buy inn short? - Have you studied the short stacking strategy?
    Posted by DOHHHHHHH
    Hi JJ,

In answer to your first question no! At least not yet. I dont have the corrwect midset to play cash, you cant just go on to a table being aggessive and win (as iv found out)

I generally play a bit of cash when im tilted, I buy on with a small amount and just have a bit of fun knowing that if i lose it doesnt matter. But, in the very near future i will begin to take it sewriously, proper BR management etc...

    So watch out :P

Very very rarely. I think the most iv had while playing is 2 pints of guiness. Buts that's it, i dont see how it would help me in any way!

    Why call yourself "Wacko90"?
    Posted by Tikay10
Well wacko kinda tied in with my last name (watkin) and also describes my personality and the way i play. Wack y.
The 90 bit was an accident, it was meant to be 92 (the year i was born, original i know) but i got it mixed up with my login name. Idiot.

What computer set up do you use to play on Sky Poker? How many Tables you play at a time?
    Posted by Tikay10
A pretty standard 17 inch laptop! And that would depend, theres rarely a time when im not multitabling, i generally dont go above 6 or 7. I would say 3 or 4 is the average.

You havent got to my last ones yet, but here is another !

It is quite possible that, as a tournament player, you will experience a serious prolonged downswing sometime in the future. From personal experience the first thing it affects is usually your aggression.

How ready are you to cope with it ?

Hi Wacko90 and good luck with your dip into the murky waters of Tikay's well!!!!!! A few nice easy questions for you to start with 1. Why did you choose that poker alias?? 2. do you prefer playing MTTs, SNGs or cash and at what levels?? 3. How many years younger than tikay are you?? 4. Will you be at SPT Leeds?? If so, introduce yourself to the TKP 5. University???? Is it just to pass time or a genuine course?? Why do all you studebnts trash Trafalgar Square??? 6. What do you put your recent improvement and great results down to?? good luck with the Q&A, pity i wont be around for 3 weeks after today
    Posted by JAEGERBOMB
    1. Wacko describes my play (wack y) and my name (Watkin)

    2. Definitly MTT's. Cashi use to let off some steam, though im looking to take it seriously when i have more time. I do like a good SNG, if i do play them i play HU Turbos or standad HU as i feel this is the stength in my game. Mtt's are my fave. I feel like its more of a challenge to over come a large field, im more motivated to do well.

    3. I can't count that high.

    4. I shall have a bash at qualifying yes, it would be good to meet everyone!

    5. I do geography at university. I take it pretty seriously tbh its something i want to do!
And i think you are wrong to put all students in the same bracket as thiose idiots that protested. Most students are not like that, although, i feel we all have a good point, this was just the wrong way to go about it.

    6. Concentration and bringing my A game to more tournies. I have always found concentration hard so at first my results were very erratic but through hard work, and quick learnign im bringing my best game to more tournies so getting much beter results.

What is your stance on man bags in the 21st century? Which other players on Sky do you respect the most in terms of their standard of play? If you could point out one common leak in most MTT players, what would it be?
    Posted by Sky_Dave
    Hi Dave,

If you have a man bag, your a very special person ( Il say no more)

There are too many to name. there are obviously the professional players which i aspire to get to but there are also the players with a smaller BR which are just as good in their own right (jjach, debdobs, mylena etc) and then you have your players like Greghogg and Penguin and Dohh who you respect. There are loads more though!

Oooo, well i think the main weakness of most MTT players is their inability to play cash. If you are just an MTT specialist then there is no way you could transfer to cash and be instantly successful! If your looking for a weakness of Mtt'ers while playing MTT;s i would say pot control is a main issue. With cash theres a lot more thought that goes into contolling the size of a pot and keeping the betting sizes to a minimum and you just dont see this in tournies!

Hi mate, What would you say has turned you from "serial looser" to formidable MTTer? Is there one major factor? Is it a number of things? What would be your one piece of advice to someone who wants to go on a similar poker journey and end up in TK's glorious well? Regards Dan
    Posted by djgrevo
    Hi Dan

Hard work for a start. When i used out a tourney i used to dwell for a long time on the hand i went out on, what i could do differently etc. But mostly experience, i just played and played and played. It's important to realise what mistakes are in your game and to change them, not just ignore them and tink you can play with it, or think what your doing is right, you have to realise what your doing wrong, and make a really good effort to rectify it. Once you begin to iron out your mistakes you start to see results coming in. I only get truly annoyed when i go out a MTT if iv gone into the hand behind and played it badly. If iv put y chips in a head then i can't do anything else.

One piece of advice...hmmm.. play your own game. Don't watch the pros and try and be like them and play like them. Youve got to find the thing that works for you. If you don't enjoy how your playing then theres really no point in playing.

In Response to Re: In The Well, #1. Wacko 90. : Hi Wacko,  This is an area of the game that I find the most interesting.  Can I ask you.. do you keep notes on the players.  Is it simply that you classify them as e.g. TAG, LAG etc. or do you look into more detail Cheers
    Posted by Mod_JockBM
    Hi jock,

I do keep notes on players but not that many. I only make notes if a player is extremely loose or extremely tight. I found myself writing things like " tight player" at first, then trying to bluff and they snap me off. I think you need to play with a player quite a bit to make proper notes on them that will be profitable to you.

    Hi trev!

I tend to stay clear of too many notes, i just make sure i watch the play as best i can for the first 5 to 10 mins then i have a pretty good read on each player :)

    Hi mate,

This would depend! If the bluffer is a calling station and will call me anyway then no i don't bother, if its someone who is constantly at it then il just stick in a re raise and see what he does :)

Thanks very much for such a great in depth reply. You have touched on something with regards to "leaks" that is one thing i need to define in my own game and figure out how to rectify it.
GL for the future mate and thanks again for a great reply.
Kudos to TK for picking such a great first "weller"

Hi Wacko, A few questions for you. Apart from poker, do you gamble ? Like bet on the horses, or play the fruit machine in your local ? Or do you only invest your money where you have control of the outcome ,like poker ? Do you actually compute odds when faced with a tough decision, or just trust your experience and instinct to come up with the answer ? When you get to the last 12 in a tournament, do you watch the other table ?
    Posted by penguin7
    Hi penguin,

No i dont gamble in anything else. Like you said, i prefer to spend my money in things that i have the oucome on. In fact iv invested most of my winnings into a savings account! :D

Good question, definitly instinct! I dont think its essential that you know exact odds of each hand, most of it is self explanatory. I think its possible to develop your instinct and improve it, it is something that can win you tournaments!

It depends on the tournament! The last 2 imes i won the primo i watched the other table but its not always profitable, i mean you can lose concentration on your table if your treying to watch the other, but yes, i sometimes do :)

Great thread and very interesting.... Do you multi table in mtts? Do you have the tv on, people chatting to you etc while your playing? or is 100% concentration on every hand? Whats best.. PS3 or Xbox?
    Posted by GoodReads
    Hi,

Yes i will usually multi table, 2-6 tables generally, no more than 6 usually though :)

No the tv is not on, sometimes i play music if iv only got one or two up because often you can think too much into hands and over play them so something to distract me slightly can help, but when theres 3 or more i try to have as little distractions as possible!

    Definitly PS3, no contest :)

    2) Being over aggessive and bleeding chips, especially with a big stack!

Honest answer, i have no idea! Is there a way i can find out? The first tournament i can remember winning in a £2.20 deepie for about £20. I used to play them almost everyday! How did i feel? Fantastic! And probably a little over confident with myself tbh, obviously very happy.

    Loving the questions!

I think the most important thing here, is to have confidence in yourself! (which i do) I go in with the attitude of not expecting to cash so there is less disappointment at the end or more elation. Iv had some pretty big downswings before. Before i won the primo fo the first time i was considering taking a break, i think my lack of confidence was seriously affecting my play and i was being negative, easily tilted, so often made stupid calls or moves.

After the primo i had confidence and began to find my groove, i felt alot more comfortable. So next time i do inevitably suffer a downswing im just going to keep going and not change my game. Il probably assess my hands in more detail and try and improve more aspects of my play and just play through it :) If i can!
